  BANDITS SCORE FOUR IN FIRST, HOLD ON TO BEAT CANADIANS AT RBC CUP

  LLOYDMINSTER, Alta./Sask. – Cale Makar and Jeff Malott had two goals and an assist apiece, leading the Brooks Bandits past the Carleton Place Canadians 5-4 in the preliminary-round finale for both Thursday at the 2016 RBC Cup.

  Brooks will finish first or second, depending on the result of the Trenton-Lloydminster game later Thursday, while the Canadians finished winless in the round robin and will not play in Saturday’s semifinals.

  Derek Lodermeier had the other goal for the Bandits, who closed their preliminary round with three consecutive wins after opening with a loss to Trenton last Saturday.

  Jacob Moreau, Bryce Van Horn, Lucas Batt and Braedyn Asselstine did the scoring for Carleton Place, which had appeared in the national championship game in each of the last two seasons.

  Needing a win to keep their season alive, the Canadians started fast, with Moreau poking in a loose puck that squeezed through Brooks goaltender Garret Hughson just 61 seconds in.

  But Makar showed off slick hands to tie the game at 10:31, dancing out of the corner and sliding a shot past Canadians netminder Colton Point, and Malott gave the Bandits the lead for good just 12 seconds later, jumping all over a rebound in the slot.

  He added his second goal at 12:27, going to the backhand to beat Point right off the face-off, before Van Horn cut the Canadians’ deficit to one at 14:43, driving hard to the net to slip a shot under Hughson.

  Makar finished off a busy first period with 2:48 to go, faking a slap shot to freeze Point before snapping a quick shot past the Carleton Place goaltender for a two-goal Brooks lead after 20 minutes.

  The offence quieted down in the second period, with just one goal added to the scoreboard; the Bandits moved the puck around on the power play before Lodermeier beat Point through traffic at 17:39.

  Down three with one period left, the Canadians began to chip away at the deficit, starting with a Lucas Batt power-play goal at 6:26; he took a gorgeous pass from Brett Murray and went five-hole on Hughson.

  Carleton Place put Point on the bench with more than four minutes to go, and Asselstine beat Hughson with a seeing-eye point shot with 1:02 left, setting up a tension-filled finish for both teams.

  But the Bandits would hold on, and will wait for the preliminary round to finish before they find out who and when they play in the semifinals on Saturday, continuing their quest for a second national title.

  LLOYDMINSTER, Alb./Sask. – Cale Makar et Jeff Malott ont obtenu deux buts et une mention d’aide chacun pour mener les Bandits de Brooks à une victoire de 5-4 sur les Canadians de Carleton Place lors du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire des deux formations, jeudi, à la Coupe RBC.

  Brooks terminera première ou deuxième au classement selon le résultat du match entre Trenton et Lloydminster plus tard jeudi, tandis que les Canadians, qui n’ont remporté aucun match du tournoi à la ronde, ne participeront pas aux demi-finales, samedi.

  Derek Lodermeier a marqué l’autre but des Bandits qui terminent la ronde préliminaire avec trois victoires consécutives après avoir perdu leur premier match contre Trenton samedi dernier.

  Jacob Moreau, Bryce Van Horn, Lucas Batt et Braedyn Asselstine ont été les auteurs des buts de Carleton Place qui avait pris part au match de championnat des deux dernières années.

  Ayant absolument besoin d’une victoire pour poursuivre leur saison, les Canadians ont bien entrepris la rencontre. Moreau s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre et l’a poussée entre les jambières du gardien de but de Brooks, Garret Hughson, après seulement 61 secondes de jeu.

  Mais Makar a fait preuve de finesse pour niveler la marque à 10 min 31 s lorsqu’il s’est avancé en provenance du coin et a glissé la rondelle derrière le gardien des Canadians, Colton Point. Malott a ensuite permis aux Bandits de prendre les devants pour de bon seulement 12 secondes plus tard en s’emparant d’un rebond en zone privilégiée. 

  Il a compté son deuxième but à 12 min 27 s d’un tir du revers dès la mise au jeu, mais Van Horn a ensuite réduit l’écart à un seul but pour les Canadians à 14 min 43 s en fonçant au filet à vive allure et en poussant la rondelle sous Hughson.

  Makar a inscrit le dernier but d’une première période mouvementée alors qu’il restait 2 min 48 s au chronomètre en feintant un tir frappé pour immobiliser Point avant de décocher rapidement un tir frappé court qui a déjoué le gardien de but de Carleton Place pour rétablir l’avance de deux buts de Brooks avant la fin du premier tiers.

  L’offensive a ralenti la cadence en deuxième période, n’ajoutant qu’un but au tableau. Les Bandits se sont échangé la rondelle pendant une supériorité numérique avant que Lodermeier ne déjoue Point d’un tir qui s’est faufilé à travers la circulation à 17 min 39 s.

  Tirant de l’arrière par trois buts au début du troisième vingt, les Canadians ont commencé à gruger l’avance des Bandits lorsque Lucas Batt a marqué en avantage numérique à 6 min 26 s, après avoir capté une superbe passe de Brett Murray et tiré la rondelle entre les jambières de Hughson.

  Carleton Place a retiré Point alors qu’il restait plus de quatre minutes au match. Asselstine a déjoué Point d’un tir précis à 1 min 2 s de la sonnerie finale entraînant une fin de match très tendue de part et d’autre.

  Mais les Bandits ont tenu bon; ils devront maintenant attendre la fin de la ronde préliminaire pour savoir quand et contre qui ils croiseront le fer, samedi, pour poursuivre leur quête d’un deuxième titre national.
