  ATLANTIC RINGS IN NEW YEAR WITH FIRST WIN

  SYDNEY, N.S. – In a battle of winless teams, it was Atlantic prevailing 4-3 over Germany in a New Year’s Day matinee at Centre 200. Atlantic (1-2) extended its unbeaten streak against Germany (0-4) to six games at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  Both teams were coming off lopsided losses the day before and came into the game looking for a better result.

  Atlantic opened the scoring just over two minutes in when Lane Cormier (Hopewell, N.S./Pictou County, NSMMHL) buried a rebound glove side on German netminder Michael Boehm, but Germany tied it 29 seconds later. After Tobias Eder was stopped on a breakaway, the Germans kept pressing and eventually Jakob Mayenschein found the back of the net.

  Goals were scored in a rapid succession again later in the period. An outstanding play by Nathan Noel (St. John’s, N.L./Saint John, LHJMQ) led to Atlantic’s second goal. While on the penalty kill, Noel skated with the puck from his own blue line, beat the defender in the offensive zone and sent a backhand pass to Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL), who easily made it 2-1 Atlantic.

  Germany tied it on the same power play 13 seconds later, when Lois Spitzner scored from the top of the crease.

  After the series of quick goals in the first, things tightened up in the second, but Atlantic finally broke through late in the period. After some nice passing around the attacking zone, Jacob passed the puck behind his back to Noel at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Noel skated tight around Boehm and deposited the puck behind him for the power play marker.

  Mayenschein notched his second goal of the game to tie things up 13 minutes into the third.

  The pace and intensity picked up in the last five minutes. With only 3:21 remaining, Kyle Ward (Sackville, N.B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) fought off his man along the boards, carried the puck behind the net and scored the game-winner on a wraparound.

  Germany outshot Atlantic 32-26.

  The winless Germans are assured of finishing last in Group B and will play the fifth-place finisher from Group A in the ninth-place game Friday afternoon in Port Hawkesbury (2 p.m. AT). Atlantic wraps up its preliminary round against Russia back in Sydney on Thursday (2 p.m. AT).

  L’ATLANTIQUE CÉLÈBRE LE NOUVEL AN AVEC UN GAIN

  SYDNEY, N.-É. – L’Atlantique l’a emporté 4-3 contre l’Allemagne en conclusion de ce duel d’équipes sans victoire disputé en cet après-midi du Premier de l’an au Centre 200. L’Atlantique (1-2) a accru sa série de gains aux dépens de l’Allemagne (0-4) à six au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans.

  Les deux équipes ont amorcé le match après avoir subi une raclée la veille, mais avaient espoir d’un meilleur résultat.

  L’Atlantique a ouvert la marque avec un but compté tout juste deux minutes après la première mise au jeu lorsque Lane Cormier (Hopewell, N.-É./comté de Pictou, NSMMHL) s’est emparé d’un retour pour battre le gardien de but allemand Michael Boehm du côté de la mitaine. L’Allemagne a toutefois réagi rapidement en établissant l’égalité 29 secondes plus tard. Après que Tobias Eder a été arrêté lors d’une échappée, la formation allemande a maintenu la pression et en fin de compte Jakob Mayenschein a réussi à trouver le fond du filet.

  Plus tard dans la période, une rapide succession de buts ont été comptés. Un jeu remarquable de Nathan Noel (St. John’s, T.-N.-L./Saint-Jean, LHJMQ) a mené au deuxième but de l’Atlantique. Alors que l’équipe était en désavantage numérique, Noel a patiné avec la rondelle de la ligne bleue de sa zone, a déjoué le défenseur dans la zone offensive et a envoyé une passe du revers à Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.-B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL), qui a facilement fait monter le compte à 2-1 pour l’Atlantique.

  L’Allemagne a égalisé la marque au cours du même avantage numérique 13 secondes plus tard, lorsque Lois Spitzner a réussi à placer la rondelle en provenance du haut de l’enclave.

  Après la série de buts successifs du premier tiers, les choses se sont corsées à la deuxième période, mais l’Atlantique a finalement fait une percée vers la fin de celle-ci. Après un joli jeu de passes dans la zone offensive, Jacob a passé la rondelle derrière lui à Noel près du cercle de mise au jeu de droite. Noel, d’un patinage serré, a contourné Boehm et déposé la rondelle derrière ce dernier, un but inscrit en avantage numérique.

  Mayenschein a compté son deuxième but du match, rétablissant l’égalité à la 13e minute de la troisième période.

  Le rythme et l’intensité du jeu se sont accentués dans les cinq dernières minutes. Avec seulement 3 min 21 s à jouer dans le match, Kyle Ward (Sackville, N.-B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) a déjoué le défenseur le long de la bande et a transporté la rondelle derrière le filet pour y aller d’un enroulé, inscrivant ainsi le but de la victoire.

  L’Allemagne a décoché 32 tirs alors que l’Atlantique en a effectué 26.

  Les Allemands, n’ayant aucune victoire à leur actif, sont assurés de finir derniers dans le groupe B et d’affronter l’équipe étant au cinquième rang du groupe A lors du match pour la neuvième place qui sera disputé vendredi après-midi (14 h HA) à Port Hawkesbury. De son côté, l’Atlantique mettra fin à la ronde préliminaire en affrontant les Russes jeudi (14 h HA) à Sydney.
