  CANADIANS SCORE THREE IN THIRD TO BEAT VIPERS FOR FIRST RBC CUP WIN

  VERNON, B.C. – Vinny Post’s goal with 4:28 left was the game-winner, helping the Carleton Place Canadians to a 3-2 win over the host Vernon Vipers in the opening day finale Saturday at the 2014 RBC Cup.

  The win came in the Canadians’ debut at Canada’s National Junior A Championship; they’ve played 50 fewer RBC Cup games than Vernon, which fell to 35-16 all-time in its 10th appearance.

  Post took a gorgeous cross-ice feed from Owen Stewart and outwaited Austin Smith, dancing around the sprawling Vernon goaltender before depositing the puck into a wide-open net, capping a back-and-forth third period.

  Dylan Gareau and Adam Lloyd had the other goals for Carleton Place (1-0), which scored all three of its goals in the final 20 minutes, erasing a 1-0 deficit after two periods.

  Colton Sparrow and Demico Hannoun both scored shorthanded goals for Vernon (0-1), which lost its tournament opener for the sixth time in its 10 appearances.

  But history is on the Vipers’ side; in the five previous tournaments they’ve started with a loss, they won the national championship at four of them (1991, 1996, 1999, 2010).

  After a scoreless first period it was Vernon that found the scoreboard first, seven minutes into the middle frame; just 12 seconds into a Dexter Dancs minor for high-sticking, Sparrow burst down the left wing before beating Carleton Place netminder Guillaume Therien to the far side.

  That would be it for scoring in the first 40 minutes, with Carleton Place holding a slight 16-15 edge in shots on goal through two periods.

  The Canadians struck quickly in the third period, tying the game just 47 seconds in. Brett D’Andrea worked the puck to the slot and onto the stick of Gareau, who spun and beat Smith along the ice to make it 1-1.

  Lloyd gave Carleton Place its first lead on the power play at 5:57, poking in a loose puck at the side of the net, but Hannoun pulled the Vipers even on the same man advantage at 8:11, finishing off a shorthanded two-on-one with T.J. Dumonceaux by rifling a wrist shot past a stretching Therien.

  Post’s winner made the Canadians the first team to beat the RBC Cup hosts in their opener since 2011, when the Vipers beat the Camrose Kodiaks.

  Carleton Place is back in action Sunday, taking on the Dauphin Kings in a battle of Day 1 winners (7 p.m. PT), while the Vipers see the ice at Kal Tire Place next on Monday, facing the Yorkton Terriers in the day’s lone game (7 p.m. PT).

  VERNON, C.- B. – Le but gagnant de Vinny Post à 4 min 28 s avant la fin du match a permis aux Canadians de Carleton Place de l’emporter 3-2 sur les hôtes les Vipers de Vernon lors du dernier match de la première journée de la Coupe RBC 2014 samedi.

  Cette victoire marque la toute première participation au Championnat national junior A des Canadians. Ils ont joué 50 matchs de la Coupe RBC en moins que Vernon, qui a maintenant une fiche totale de 35-16 en 10 participations.

  Post a clôturé une troisième période mouvementée en beauté lorsqu’il a récupéré une magnifique passe d’Owen Stewart et a déjoué le gardien de but de Vernon Austin Smith, étendu de tout son long, avant de loger la rondelle dans un but grand ouvert.

  Dylan Gareau et Adam Lloyd ont inscrit les deux autres buts de Carleton Place (1-0), qui a marqué ses trois buts au dernier vingt afin de rattraper son retard 1-0 après deux tiers.

  Colton Sparrow et Demico Hannoun ont tous les deux inscrit des buts au tableau en désavantage numérique du côté de Vernon (0-1), qui a perdu le match d’ouverture du tournoi pour la sixième fois en 10 participations.

  L’histoire est toutefois du côté des Vipers : l’équipe a connu une défaite au premier match lors de cinq éditions du championnat et a été déclarée championne du tournoi à quatre d’entre elles (1991, 1996, 1999, 2010).

  Vernon a finalement réussi à ouvrir la marque sept minutes après le début du deuxième tiers. À peine 12 secondes après le début de la punition mineure pour bâton élevé de Dexter Dancs, Sparrow a profité de l’avantage numérique pour s’avancer à l’aile gauche et déjouer le gardien de but de Carleton Place, Guillaume Therien.

  Aucun autre but n’a été marqué au cours des deux premiers tiers, et Carleton Place a profité d’une légère avance de 16-15 au chapitre des tirs au but.

  Néanmoins, les Canadians se sont rapidement repris à la troisième période et ont égalisé la marque à la 47e seconde . Brett D’Andrea a manié la rondelle jusqu’en zone privilégiée pour la placer sur la lame de Gareau, qui a réussi à semer Smith afin de porter le pointage à 1-1.

  Un jeu en avantage numérique à 5 min 57 s a permis à Carleton Place de prendre l’avance quand Lloyd a harponné une rondelle libre sur le côté du filet. Hannoun a toutefois profité du même avantage numérique pour aussitôt rétablir l’égalité à 8 min 11 s, terminant le jeu en désavantage numérique par un deux contre un avec T.J. Dumonceaux et dirigeant un tir du poignet derrière Therien, allongé devant le filet.

  Grâce au but gagnant de Post, les Canadians sont la première équipe à vaincre les hôtes de la Coupe RBC au match d’ouverture depuis 2011, quand les Vipers avaient eux-mêmes surclassé les Kodiaks de Camrose.

  Carleton Place reviendra sur la glace dimanche, alors que l’équipe affrontera les Kings de Dauphin lors d’un duel des vainqueurs du jour  1 (19 h HP), tandis que le prochain rendez-vous des Vipers aura lieu à Kal Tire Place lundi, le seul match de la journée, contre les Terriers de Yorkton (19 h HP).
