  DANCS DOES IT IN OVERTIME, VIPERS ADVANCE TO RBC CUP SEMIFINALS

  VERNON, B.C. – Dexter Dancs was the overtime hero, scoring on the power play 10:17 into the extra period to give the Vernon Vipers a 3-2 win over the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots in Thursday night’s preliminary round finale, sending the host team to the semifinals at the 2014 RBC Cup.

  The win means the Vipers will face the Yorkton Terriers in Saturday’s early semifinal (2 p.m. PT). It’ll be the second time the two teams face off in a national semifinal – Vernon scored a 7-5 victory in 1991.

  The Dauphin Kings and Carleton Place Canadians will meet in the other semifinal (6 p.m. PT).

  Dancs took a pass down low from Michael McNicholas and cut to the front of the net, sliding the puck under Toronto Lakeshore goaltender Evan Buitenhuis and setting off pandemonium at Kal Tire Place.

  Brett Mulcahy and Demico Hannoun had the other goals for Vernon (2-2), which will make its ninth trip to the semifinals in 10 appearances at Canada’s National Junior A Championship, two wins from a record-setting seventh national title.

  Andreas Tsogkas and Michael Prapavessis scored for Toronto Lakeshore (1-3), which saw its season come to an end after winning its first-ever Ontario Junior Hockey League and Dudley Hewitt Cup championships.

  The Patriots were 7.5 seconds from defeat in regulation before Prapavessis’ power play goal forced overtime.

  Buitenhuis was spectacular for Toronto Lakeshore, finishing with 43 saves. The Patriots were outshot by almost a two-to-one margin, 46-24, including 30-14 in the first two periods and 9-2 in overtime.

  It was the Central Region champions who got on the board first; Tsogkas’ wrist shot from the high slot found its way through traffic and past Vernon netminder Austin Smith for a 1-0 lead.

  But the Vipers would answer on a power play goal from Mulcahy, who finished off a pretty pass from Colton Sparrow to send the game to the first intermission tied 1-1.

  That would be it for scoring through the 40 minutes despite the best efforts of the Vipers, who heavily outshot and out-chanced the Patriots in the first two periods.

  Hannoun gave Vernon its first lead with 4:49 to go in the third, redirecting a pretty saucer pass from McNicholas over Buitenhuis’ glove, putting the Vipers on the verge of the semifinals, but Prapavessis evened the game in the dying seconds.

  With Buitenhuis on the bench and Toronto Lakeshore enjoying a six-on-four advantage, a blind centering pass from Nathan Feric found its way onto the stick of the Patriots’ defenceman, who buried the tying goal.

  DANCS COMPTE EN PROLONGATION ET LES VIPERS AVANCENT EN DEMI-FINALE DE LA COUPE RBC

  VERNON, C.-B. – Dexter Dancs a joué les héros en prolongation, comptant en avantage numérique à 10 min 17 s pour permettre aux Vipers de Vernon de vaincre les Patriots de Toronto Lakeshore 3-2 au dernier match de la ronde préliminaire jeudi soir, propulsant l’équipe hôte en demi-finale de la Coupe RBC 2014.

  Cette victoire signifie que les Vipers affronteront les Terriers de Yorkton lors de la première demi-finale samedi (14 h HP). Ce sera la deuxième fois que les deux formations croiseront le fer en demi-finale nationale. Vernon l’avait emporté 7-5 en 1991.

  Les Kings de Dauphin et les Canadians de Carleton Place ont rendez-vous dans l’autre demi-finale (18 h HP).

  Dancs a accepté une passe de Michael McNicholas avant de couper devant le filet pour loger le disque sous le gardien de but de Toronto Lakeshore, Evan Buitenhuis, semant l’hystérie à la Kal Tire Place.

  Brett Mulcahy et Demico Hannoun ont été les autres marqueurs de Vernon (2-2), qui s’est qualifiée pour une neuvième participation en demi-finale en dix apparitions au Championnat national junior A et qui s’approche à deux victoires d’un septième titre national, ce qui serait un record.

  Andreas Tsogkas et Michael Prapavessis ont fait vibrer les cordages pour Toronto Lakeshore (1-3), qui a vu sa saison prendre fin après avoir remporté son premier championnat de la Ligue de hockey junior de l’Ontario et de la Coupe Dudley Hewitt.

  Les Patriots étaient à 7,5 secondes d’un revers en temps réglementaire avant que le but de Prapavessis ne force la tenue d’une prolongation.

  Buitenhuis a été spectaculaire pour Toronto Lakeshore, qui a terminé avec 43 arrêts. Les Patriots ont reçu presque le double de tirs, 46-24, recevant d’ailleurs 30 tirs contre 14 au cours des deux premières périodes et 9 contre 2 en prolongation.

  Ce sont les champions de la région centrale qui ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage. Le tir des poignets de Tsogkas de la zone privilégiée a trouvé son chemin dans la circulation pour battre le portier de Vernon, Austin Smith, procurant une avance de 1-0 à son équipe.

  Cependant, les Vipers ont répliqué sur le jeu de puissance du bâton de Mulcahy qui a complété un superbe jeu de passe de Colton Sparrow. Les deux formations ont retraité au vestiaire avec une égalité de 1-1.

  Aucun filet n’a été inscrit jusqu’en troisième période même si les Vipers ont largement dominé les Patriots pour les tirs au but et les chances de marquer au cours des 40 premières minutes.

  Hannoun a procuré une première avance à Vernon avec 4 min 49 s à écouler en troisième période, redirigeant une belle passe surélevée de McNicholas par-dessus la mitaine de Buitenhuis, propulsant les Vipers sur le chemin des demi-finales, mais Prapavessis a remis les pendules à l’heure dans les dernières secondes.

  Avec Buitenhuis au banc et Toronto Lakeshore profitant d’un avantage numérique de 6 contre 4, une passe centrée de Nathan Feric a frayé son chemin vers le bâton du défenseur des Patriots, qui a inscrit le but égalisateur.
