  POZNIKOFF WINS IT FOR THUNDER

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – The math was simple, really: claim a point and claim a spot in the semifinals.

  Mission accomplished.

  Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alta.) scored 4:21 into overtime and the Edmonton Thunder defeated the Stoney Creek Sabres 4-3 on Thursday night in the final game of the preliminary round of the 2014 Esso Cup.

  “Luckily, we got a good chip and I could just skate in,” said Poznikoff following the game. “Once I got a step on (the defenceman) I had to get the goalie sliding. Luckily I got it, and it just (went) in.”

  The overtime winner was Poznikoff’s second goal of the night. Jessica Healey (Edmonton, Alta.) and Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alta.) also scored for the Thunder.

  Kayla Vespa (Stoney Creek, Ont.), Mallory Young (Caistor Centre, Ont.) and Claire Merrick (Oakville, Ont.) scored for the Sabres.

  This week has been a struggle for the experienced Edmonton team, making its sixth straight appearance at the Esso Cup. After suffering losses in three of its first four games, Poznikoff said the mentality coming into the preliminary finale was different.

  “Those other games we were there, but there was nothing that riled us up,” she said. “But six minutes before we went on for our warm-up everybody was just cheering. That really helped us.”

  The first period was the best 20 minutes the Thunder had played all week. Several early rushes showed the team could match the Sabres’ speed.

  And it would be the Thunder’s quickness that got the team the first goal of the game. Poznikoff brought the puck from the right corner behind the net and finished with a wraparound into the bottom left side of Hannah Miller’s (Georgetown, Ont.) cage.

  For the first time at the tournament, Stoney Creek found itself trailing.

  Less than three minutes later, Healey doubled the lead with a sharp-angle shot from the bottom of the face-off circle.

  Those two quick strikes spelled an end to the evening for Miller, who was replaced by Serena D’Angelo (Stoney Creek, Ont.).
   
  Whatever good feelings Edmonton had coming out of the first intermission disappeared 15 seconds after retaking the ice.

  Down a player, Vespa put home the rebound on Emily Calligan’s (Hannon, Ont.) wraparound attempt.

  Young pulled her team even five minutes later when she put home Summer Belanco’s (Brantford, Ont.) shot.

  Merrick’s team-leading third goal of the tournament – in which she drove past and went high on the goalie, before sliding on her stomach to the side boards – at 4:12 of the third tied things up.

  The teams meet again Friday night in the semifinals.

  POZNIKOFF DONNE LA VICTOIRE AU THUNDER

  Alexandra Poznikoff (Edmonton, Alb.) a marqué à 4 min 21 s de la prolongation et le Thunder d’Edmonton a vaincu les Sabres de Stoney Creek 4-3 jeudi soir dans le dernier match de la ronde préliminaire de la Coupe Esso 2014.

  « Par chance, nous avons bien placé la rondelle en zone adverse et j’ai pu y entrer », a dit Poznikoff à l’issue de la partie. « Une fois que j’ai pris une foulée d’avance sur la défenseure, je me devais de faire glisser la gardienne de but. Je l’ai eu et j’ai marqué. »

  Le but de la victoire était le deuxième de Poznikoff ce soir. Jessica Healey (Edmonton, Alb.) et Amy Boucher (Edmonton, Alb.) ont aussi marqué pour le Thunder.

  Kayla Vespa (Stoney Creek, Ont.), Mallory Young (Caistor Centre, Ont.) et Claire Merrick (Oakville, Ont.) ont fait mouche dans le clan des Sabres.

  La formation expérimentée d’Edmonton a connu une semaine difficile, elle qui participe à la Coupe Esso pour une sixième fois de suite. Après avoir subi des revers dans trois de ses quatre premiers matchs, Poznikoff a mentionné que la mentalité de l’équipe à l’aube du dernier match de la ronde préliminaire était différente.

  « Lors des autres matchs, nous étions dans le coup, mais rien ne nous a donné un élan additionnel d’enthousiasme », a-t-elle dit. « Cependant, six minutes avant l’échauffement, tout le monde encourageait. Cela nous a vraiment aidées. »

  La première période a été la meilleure du Thunder cette semaine. Quelques montées en début de rencontre ont prouvé que l’équipe pouvait rivaliser avec la vitesse des Sabres.

  C’est la rapidité du Thunder qui lui a permis d’ouvrir la marque. Poznikoff a ramené la rondelle du coin droit vers l’arrière du filet et a complété le jeu avec un enroulé du côté gauche de Hannah Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).

  Pour la première fois du tournoi, Stoney Creek a tiré de l’arrière.

  Moins de trois minutes plus tard, Healey a doublé l’avance d’un tir avec peu d’angle du bas du cercle de mise au jeu.

  Ces deux buts rapides ont mis fin à la soirée de travail de Miller, qui a été remplacée par Serena D’Angelo (Stoney Creek, Ont.).

  Peu importe les belles émotions que ressentaient les joueuses d’Edmonton à l’issue du premier entracte, celles-ci ont disparu 15 secondes après avoir sauté sur la glace.

  Avec une joueuse en moins, Vespa a marqué sur le retour d’Emily Calligan (Hannon, Ont.) qui venait de réaliser un enroulé.

  Young a créé l’égalité cinq minutes plus tard lorsqu’elle a marqué sur un retour de Summer Belanco (Brantford, Ont.).

  Avec son troisième but du tournoi, un sommet chez son équipe, Merrick a elle aussi nivelé la marque à 4 min 12 s.

  Les deux équipes s’affronteront encore vendredi soir en demi-finale.
