  GOLD WINGS SHUT OUT LADY WOLVES, ADVANCE TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.), Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) and Paige Smith (Midale, Sask.) scored, while Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) made 25 saves in picking up her first shutout of the tournament, as the Weyburn Gold Wings advanced to the gold medal game with a win over the Sudbury Lady Wolves on Friday.

  Bourassa and Pirlot each added an assist, as did Ashten Sinclair (Limerick, Sask.) and Jenica Whitrow (Yellow Grass, Sask.).

  The day’s first semifinal was a rematch of the game that opened the 2014 Esso Cup. Weyburn won that day, 2-1, in a tight contest that wasn’t decided until the last two minutes of the game.

  For the first 20 minutes it appeared it would be more of the same. Coming in it was suspected this would be a battle between offence and defence. Sudbury seemed to find its scoring groove the day before, and earlier Friday forward Karli Shell (Lively, Ont.) was named Top Scorer and Top Forward at the event.

  On the other bench, Weyburn had stifled Moncton in its final preliminary game and was led by Kish, who had been recognized as the Top Goaltender that morning.

  Despite getting 11 shots a side in the first, neither team was able to get that all-important first goal. Sudbury came closest – with mere seconds left on the clock Kennedy Lanktree (Mindemoya, Ont.) hit the post on a two-on-one.

  Weyburn would get on the board just past the halfway point of the game. Using her defender as a screen, Bourassa shot high and beat Stephanie Pascal (Val Caron, Ont.).

  Starting the third on the power play, the Gold Wings doubled its lead less than a minute in. A poor pass by the defence left the puck sitting open in the crease and Pirlot free to shovel it in.

  “It was a lot of hard work in the corner by the whole line,” Pirlot said after the game.

  Smith made it 3-0, when after fanning on her first attempt from the bottom of the face-off circle, she was able to get a shot off on her next stride that seemed to surprise Pascal.

  The lessons the Gold Wings learned almost a week ago proved to be the difference.

  “We needed to be more careful on the walls because they crash the walls a lot,” Pirlot said. “And we couldn’t give them the zone.”

  They say defence wins championships. On this day, it at least got the Gold Wings one step closer.

  STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.), Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) et Paige Smith (Midale, Sask.) ont marqué, Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) a effectué 25 arrêts pour réussir son premier jeu blanc du tournoi et les Gold Wings de Weyburn se qualifient pour le match pour la médaille d’or grâce à une victoire sur les Lady Wolves de Sudbury, vendredi.

  Bourassa et Pirlot ont aussi obtenu une mention d’aide, tout comme Ashten Sinclair (Limerick, Sask.) et Jenica Whitrow (Yellow Grass, Sask.).

  La première demi-finale de la journée a été une reprise du match d’ouverture de la Coupe Esso 2014, match que Weyburn avait gagné par la marque de 2-1 dans une compétition serrée qui n’a été décidée qu’au cours des deux dernières minutes.

  Aujourd’hui, pour les 20 premières minutes, tout semblait indiquer que les choses allaient se dérouler de façon semblable. Tous s’attendaient à un affrontement de l’offensive contre la défensive. Sudbury avait retrouvé sa touche la veille, et plus tôt vendredi, l’avant Karli Shell (Lively, Ont.) avait été nommée Meilleure pointeuse et Meilleure avant du tournoi.

  Quant à Weyburn, l’équipe avait battu Moncton à son dernier match préliminaire et elle pouvait compter sur Kish qui avait été nommé Meilleure gardienne de but du tournoi plus tôt le matin même. 

  Malgré 11 tirs au but de chaque côté en première période, ni l’une ni l’autre des équipes n’ont pu marquer l’important premier but. Mais Sudbury a bien failli ouvrir la marque quand, alors qu’il ne restait que quelques secondes à jouer dans la période, le tir de Kennedy Lanktree (Mindemoya, Ont.) a frappé le poteau lors d’un deux contre un.  

  Weyburn a compté le premier but du match peu après la mi-temps. Utilisant une défenseure comme écran, Bourassa a effectué un tir dans la partie supérieure du filet pour déjouer la gardienne Stephanie Pascal (Val Caron, Ont.).

  Amorçant le dernier vingt en supériorité numérique, les Gold Wings ont doublé leur avance au cours de la première minute de jeu. Une mauvaise passe en défensive a laissé la rondelle libre dans l’enclave et Pirlot n’a pas hésité à la pousser dans le but.

  « Le trio au complet a travaillé fort dans le coin », a dit Pirlot après le match.

  Smith a creusé l’écart à 3-0 quand, après avoir raté son premier tir du bas du cercle de mise au jeu, elle a pris une foulée et a décoché un tir qui a semblé surprendre Pascal.  

  Les leçons apprises par les Gold Wings la semaine dernière ont porté des fruits.

  « Nous devions être plus vigilantes le long de la bande, car elles s’en servent beaucoup », a dit Pirlot. « Et nous ne pouvions pas leur concéder la zone. »

  On dit que la défensive gagne des championnats. Eh bien, aujourd’hui, du moins, elle a permis au Gold Wings de s’en rapprocher.
