  CANADA OPENS WORLDS WITH WIN OVER LATVIA

  PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Dallas, NHL) had two goals and an assist, and Nathan MacKinnon (Cole Harbour, N.S./Colorado, NHL) added a goal and two helpers as Canada’s National Men’s Team opened the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship with a 6-1 win over Latvia on Friday.

  Canada scored three times in 4:14 midway through the first period to take early control and improve to 8-0-1 all-time against the Latvians at the world championship.

  Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.S./Pittsburgh, NHL) added a goal and an assist for Canada, Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, NHL) and Tyler Toffoli (Scarborough, Ont./Los Angeles, NHL) had the other goals and Mike Smith (Kingston, Ont./Arizona, NHL) made 16 saves for the win.

  Latvia’s only tally came from the stick of Kaspars Daugavins.

  It was MacKinnon who got the scoring started midway through the first period, capitalizing on a one-timer off a feed from Spezza at 9:57 for a 1-0 lead.

  Spezza knocked in a rebound off a Hamhuis slap shot at 13:04 to double the advantage, and Duchene banked his shot off a Latvian defender and past goaltender Ervins Mustukovs just 67 seconds later to give Canada a 3-0 lead heading to the intermission.

  Canada kept rolling in the early stages of the second period, finding the back of the net twice in the first 3:04.

  After a shot from Brent Burns (Barrie, Ont./San Jose, NHL) went wide and bounced off the end boards, Toffoli tipped a Dan Hamhuis (Smithers, B.C./Vancouver, NHL) slap shot past Mustukovs to make it 4-0.

  Spezza netted his second of the game for a 5-0 lead, taking a pass from MacKinnon and burying his own rebound after his initial shot hit the post.

  That would be all for Mustukovs, who was replaced by Edgar Mastalskis after allowing five goals in 13 shots. Mastalskis kept the game respectable with a stand-out performance, making 28 saves.

  Daugavins ruined Smith’s shutout bid with 7:54 to go, benefitting from a lucky bounce, but Crosby got that back with just 83 seconds left, roofing a wrist shot on a penalty shot.

  Canada will go for back-to-back wins to open the world championship when it takes to the ice at O2 Arena to face Germany on Sunday (10:15 a.m. ET/7:15 a.m. PT).

  PRAGUE, République tchèque – Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Dallas, LNH) a obtenu deux buts et une aide, et Nathan MacKinnon (Cole Harbour, N.-É./Colorado, LNH) a ajouté un but et deux aides alors que l’équipe nationale masculine du Canada jouait ouvrait le Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace 2015 de l’IIHF et remportait son match contre la Lettonie au compte de 6-1 vendredi.

  Le Canada a compté à trois reprises en 4 min 14 s au milieu de la première période prenant rapidement le contrôle de la rencontre avant d’améliorer sa fiche de tous les temps à 8-0-1 contre la Lettonie au championnat mondial.

  Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.-É./Pittsburgh, LNH) et Dan Hamhuis (Smithers, C.-B./Vancouver, LNH) ont chacun ajouté un but et une aide pour le Canada, Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, LNH) a inscrit l’autre but et Mike Smith (Kingston, Ont./Arizona, LNH) a réussi 16 arrêts pour porter la victoire à sa fiche.

  Le seul but de la Lettonie est venu du bâton de Kaspars Daugavins.

  C’est MacKinnon qui a brisé la glace au milieu du premier vingt, en tirant profit d’un tir sur réception provenant de Spezza à 9 min 57 s, donnant une avance de 1-0 aux Canadiens.

  Spezza a ensuite réussi à compter en saisissant un rebond d’un tir frappé de Hamruis à 13 min 4 s doublant ainsi la marque, puis Duchene a décoché un tir qui a bondi sur un défenseur letton avant de se loger derrière le gardien de but Ervins Mustukovs seulement 67 secondes plus tard, procurant une avance de 3-0 au Canada avant le premier entracte.

  Le Canada a maintenu le tempo en début de deuxième période, trouvant le fond du filet à deux reprises au cours des trois premières minutes et quatre secondes de jeu.

  Après qu’un tir imprécis de Brent Burns (Barrie, Ont./San Jose, LNH) a rebondi sur la bande à l’extrémité de la patinoire, Hamhuis s’est avancé de la ligne bleue et a percuté un tir frappé derrière Mustukovs, portant la marque à 4-0.

  Spezza a inscrit son deuxième du match pour creuser l’écart à 5-0; il a saisi une passe de MacKinnon et a fait mouche en s’emparant de son propre rebond après avoir préalablement heurté le poteau.

  Ce fut le chant du cygne de Mustukovs qui fut remplacé par Edgar Mastalskis après avoir accordé cinq buts sur 13 tirs. Mastalskis a redonné du lustre au match avec une performance remarquable de 28 arrêts.

  Daugavins a ruiné le jeu blanc de Smith avec 7 min 54 s à écouler, en profitant d’un rebond chanceux, mais Crosby a répliqué alors qu’il ne restait que 83 secondes à jouer, en décochant un tir du poignet dans la lucarne sur un tir de punition.

  Le Canada sera en quête d’une deuxième victoire consécutive au championnat mondial lorsqu’il se présentera à l’Aréna 02 pour affronter l’Allemagne dimanche à 10 h 15 HE/7 h 15 HP.
