FISHER’S FOUR POINTS LEAD CAPITALS OVER LADY WOLVES

RED DEER, Alta. – One day after her line mate Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.) lit up the Moncton Rockets for a two-goal, two-assist game, Mekaela Fisher (Warren, Man.) pulled the same four-point feat in leading the Central Plains Capitals past the Sudbury Lady Wolves.

With the win the Capitals moved up the leaderboard and kept the Lady Wolves closer to the pack by handing the Ontario champions their first loss.

Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.) had a goal and two assists for the winners, while Oswald added another goal and assist to her stats. Kelly-Rae Zdan (Alonsa, Man.) also had an assist.

Lauren Taraschuk (Winnipeg, Man.) made 20 saves in the win.

Karli Shell (Sudbury, Ont.) scored for Sudbury; Melisa Kingsley (Sudbury, Ont.) picked up an assist.

Danika Lefrancois (Sudbury, Ont.) stopped 29 of 33 saves in the loss.

The question entering the game was whether the defensive-minded Capitals would be able to slow the Sudbury attack. The Lady Wolves had scored 19 goals coming in and had never trailed in any game.

It took the Capitals 3:20 to change that. Fisher found Upgang from behind the net for the forward’s third goal at the Esso Cup.

Sudbury didn’t stay down long. Shell fed Kingsley across the ice to the side of net. Taraschuk made the initial save, but with the rebound sitting only inches in front of the goal line, a following Shell easily tipped in the puck.

Central Plains got off an even quicker start in the second. Just 3:05 in Upgang’s backhand centering pass went in off defender Deidre Debassige (M’Chigeeng, Ont.).

After not being tested for two day the question was how would Sudbury respond to being challenged.

It didn’t have much say in the answer. The Capitals didn’t allow the Lady Wolves to move as they had in starting 3-0-0-0.

For a team that had been vaunted for its defence coming in, for the second straight game the Capitals’ offence led the way.

It supplied two more goals in less than three minutes in the third. First, Oswald converted Fisher’s centering pass from the side boards. Then, after blocking Carley Olivier’s (Sudbury, Ont.) clearing attempt along the side boards, Fisher kept it on the ensuing two-on-one and finished five-hole.

Central Plains winds up its preliminary round Thursday night (7 p.m.) against the Red Deer Chiefs, while Sudbury finishes off against the Edmonton Thunder in the day’s first game (12 p.m. MT).

RED DEER, Alb. – Un jour après que sa coéquipière de trio Sheridan Oswald (MacGregor, Man.) a brillé à l’offensive pour les Rockets de Moncton en accumulant deux buts et deux aides, Mekaela Fisher (Warren, Man.) a réussi exactement le même exploit pour mener Central Plains à la victoire sur les Lady Wolves de Sudbury.  

La victoire a permis aux Capitals de grimper au classement tout en gardant les Lady Wolves plus près du peloton en leur infligeant un premier revers.

Emily Upgang (Poplar Point, Man.) a accumulé un but et deux aides pour les gagnantes tandis qu’Oswald ajoutait un autre but et une autre aide à ses statistiques. Kelly-Rae Zdan (Alonsa, Man.) a aussi obtenu une mention d’aide.

Lauren Taraschuk (Winnipeg, Man.) a réalisé 20 arrêts pour porter la victoire à sa fiche.

Karli Shell (Sudbury, Ont.) a marqué pour Sudbury et Melisa Kingsley (Sudbury, Ont.) a obtenu une mention d’aide.

Danika Lefrancois (Sudbury, Ont.) a repoussé 29 des 33 tirs dans sa direction.

Avant le match, tous se demandaient si les Capitals, une formation axée sur la défensive, allait être en mesure de freiner l’attaque de Sudbury qui avait marqué 19 buts et n’avait jamais tiré de l’arrière au tournoi.

Il aura fallu 3 min 20 s aux Capitals pour changer la donne. Fisher a remis la rondelle à Upgang de l’arrière du filet et l’avant a réussi son troisième but à la Coupe Esso.

Mais Sudbury n’a pas tardé à répliquer. Shell a effectué une passe transversale à Kingsley à côté du but. Taraschuk a réussi l’arrêt, mais alors que le rebond gisait quelques pouces devant la gardienne, Shell a facilement poussé la rondelle dans le filet.

Central Plains s’est mis en marche encore plus rapidement en deuxième période. Après seulement 3 min 5 s de jeu, la passe du revers d’Upgang a dévié sur la défenseure Deidre Debassige (M’Chigeeng, Ont.) et la rondelle s’est retrouvée dans le but.

N’ayant eu aucune réelle opposition pendant deux jours, Sudbury allait-elle être en mesure de relever le défi?

Les Lady Wolves n’ont pas vraiment eu leur mot à dire puisque les Capitals ne leur ont pas permis de s’affirmer comme elles l’avaient fait pour présenter un bilan de 3-0-0-0.

Pour une équipe réputée pour sa défensive, c’est l’offensive des Capitals qui a dominé pour un deuxième match de suite.

L’offensive a produit deux autres buts en moins de trois minutes au troisième tiers. D’abord, Oswald a fait mouche après avoir capté une passe au centre de Fisher puis, après avoir bloqué la tentative de dégagement de Carley Olivier (Sudbury, Ont.) le long de la bande sur le côté, Fisher a gardé la rondelle lors du deux contre un qui a suivi et a marqué d’un tir entre les jambières de la gardienne.

Central Plains disputera son dernier match en ronde préliminaire jeudi soir (19 h) contre les Chiefs de Red Deer tandis que Sudbury jouera son dernier match préliminaire contre le Thunder d’Edmonton lors du premier match de la journée (12 h HR).
