THERIEN GETS SHUTOUT, CANADIANS BLANK THUNDERBIRDS AT RBC CUP

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Guillaume Therien turned away all 27 shots he faced to lead the Carleton Place Canadians to a 4-0 win over the Soo Thunderbirds in the first game for both Saturday at the 2015 RBC Cup.

Therien became the first goaltender to record a shutout at Canada’s National Junior A Championship since Surrey Eagles netminder Michael Santaguida, who blanked both the Truro Bearcats and Minnesota Wilderness at the 2013 tournament in Summerside, P.E.I.

Jordan Larson and Andy Sturtz paced the offence with three points apiece; Larson scored twice and added an assist, while Sturtz had a goal and two helpers. Owen Stewart, the third member of the line, had two assists.

Wesley Baker was the other goal scorer for Carleton Place.

Sturtz, one of seven Canadians back from the team that lost the RBC Cup championship game to Yorkton last year, opened the scoring at 7:19, going to the backhand on a breakaway to beat Soo goaltender Mario Culina.

Both teams turned up the offence in the second period, combining for 35 shots – 20 for Carleton Place and 15 for the Thunderbirds – though only the Canadians would find the back of the net.

Baker took advantage of a scramble in front of Culina just past the four-minute mark of the middle frame, finally knocking the puck past the Soo goaltender on the fifth try.

Larson’s first of the game came at 18:37 of the second; he cruised into the slot and hammered a one-timer past Culina off a feed from Sturtz to send the East Region champions to the dressing room up 3-0.

He added his second at 13:30 of the third, roofing a puck from in very tight after Sturtz did the hard work to get the puck to the net.

The Thunderbirds had their chances, but either couldn’t get the puck to bounce their way or were turned away by Therien, who has started all seven of the Canadians’ RBC Cup games over the last two years.

Carleton Place sees the ice next on Sunday night when they meet the host Portage Terriers (7 p.m. CT) in a match-up of Day 1 winners, while the Thunderbirds will have Sunday off before facing the Melfort Mustangs in Monday’s lone game (7 p.m. CT).

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Guillaume Therien a repoussé les 27 tirs qu’il a affrontés pour mener les Canadians de Carleton Place à une victoire de 4-0 sur les Thunderbirds de Soo lors du premier match des deux équipes, dimanche, à la Coupe RBC 2015.

Therien devient le premier gardien de but à réussir un jeu blanc au Championnat national junior A depuis que le gardien de but des Eagles de Surrey, Michael Santaguida, a blanchi les Bearcats de Truro et le Wilderness du Minnesota au tournoi de 2013 à Summerside, Î.-P.-É.

Jordan Larson et Andy Sturtz ont mené l’offensive, accumulant trois points chacun; Larson a marqué deux fois et obtenu une mention d’aide, tandis que Sturtz a accumulé un but et deux aides. Owen Stewart, le troisième membre du trio, a obtenu deux mentions d’aide.

Wesley Baker a été l’auteur de l’autre but de Carleton Place.

Sturtz, un des sept joueurs des Canadians qui étaient membres de l’équipe qui a perdu en finale de la Coupe RBC contre Yorkton l’an dernier, a ouvert le pointage à 7 min 19 s en s’avançant en échappée et en déjouant le gardien de but de Soo, Mario Culina, d’un tir du revers.

Les deux équipes ont augmenté la cadence en deuxième période, décochant 35 tirs au but – 20 pour Carleton Place et 15 pour les Thunderbirds –, mais seuls les Canadians ont fait mouche.
 
Baker a profité d’une mêlée devant de filet de Culina peu après la quatrième minute de jeu de la période médiane pour pousser la rondelle derrière le gardien à sa cinquième tentative.

Le premier but du match de Larson est survenu à 18 min 37 s de la deuxième période; il s’est avancé en zone privilégiée et a décoché un puissant tir sur réception derrière Culina en captant une passe de Sturtz pour donner une avance de 3-0 aux champions de l’Est.

Il a réussi son deuxième but à 13 min 30 s du dernier tiers en décochant un tir à bout portant dans la partie supérieure après que Sturtz a fait tout le travail pour transporter la rondelle au filet.

Les Thunderbirds ont eu des occasions de marquer, mais soit qu’ils n’ont pu transporter la rondelle au filet, soit que Therien a repoussé leurs tirs. Le gardien de but a été le gardien partant pour les sept matchs des Canadians à la Coupe RBC au cours des deux dernières années.

Carleton Place sera de retour sur la glace dimanche soir contre ses hôtes, les Terriers de Portage (19 h HC), dans un affrontement des gagnants du jour 1, tandis que les Thunderbirds auront congé dimanche avant de se mesurer aux Mustangs de Melfort lors du seul match lundi (19 h HC).
