CANADA ERASES EARLY DEFICIT, BEATS CZECHS IN HLINKA OPENER
JASON LA ROSE
BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team got its quest for an eighth consecutive gold medal at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup off to a winning start Monday, coming from behind to beat the Czech Republic 3-1.
Dillon Dube (Cochrane, Alta./Kelowna, WHL) and Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) scored nine minutes apart in the first period to give Canada the lead for good in front of a pro-Czech crowd of 1,846.
Beck Malenstyn (Ladner, B.C./Calgary, WHL) added the insurance goal in the third period.
The Czechs rode the partisan crowd to an early lead when Matyas Kantner knocked a loose puck past Canadian goaltender Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) just 3:18 in.
But Michael McLeod (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga, OHL) made a pretty pass into the middle for a streaking Dube, who went to the backhand to beat Czech netminder Adam Brizgala with the Canadians shorthanded less than three minutes later.
Patrick put Canada ahead for the first time at 15:11, parking himself in front of Brizgala and redirecting a Pierre-Luc Dubois (Rimouski, Que./Cape Breton, QMJHL) shot for a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes.
Patrick had the best chance of a scoreless second period, getting a penalty shot after Brizgala threw his stick on a Canadian power play; the puck bobbled just as he reached the Czech goal, keeping it a one-goal game.
With the Czechs pressing for the tying goal in the third, Malenstyn gave Canada some breathing room midway through the final frame, knocking his own rebound out of mid-air with one hand.
Neither team could do much with the power play; the Czechs went without a goal in five chances, while the Canadians were goalless in two tries, although they did manage a shorthanded marker.
Canada returns to action Tuesday for the second of three preliminary round games, taking on Sweden (9:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. PT) before wrapping the round robin against Switzerland on Wednesday (9:30 a.m. ET/6:30 a.m. PT).
