CANADA SHUTS OUT FRANCE, STAYS PERFECT AT WORLDS

DAVID BRIEN

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Mark Stone (Winnipeg, Man./Ottawa, NHL) and Corey Perry (Peterborough, Ont./Anaheim, NHL) had a goal and an assist apiece to pace the offence for Canada’s National Men’s Team as it remained undefeated at the 2016 IIHF World Championship with a 4-0 win over France on Monday.

The win set up a first-place showdown between the Canadians and fellow unbeaten Finland on Tuesday in the preliminary round finale for both (1:15 p.m. ET/10:15 a.m. PT, TSN).

Calvin Pickard (Winnipeg, Man./Colorado, NHL) earned the win and shutout in the Canadian goal, making 13 saves, while Matt Duchene (Haliburton, Ont./Colorado, NHL) and Mark Scheifele (Kitchener, Ont./Winnipeg, NHL) also found the back of the net for Canada.

While the French aren’t known as a world hockey power, they have given Canada trouble in recent years, earning a 3-2 upset shootout win in 2014 before a narrow 4-3 loss last year.

The Canadians got the only goal of the first period off the stick of Duchene, whose wrist shot nicked off the glove of French goaltender Ronan Quemener and trickled over the line for a power-play tally at 8:32.

Quemener kept the game close through the first 40 minutes, making 25 saves, but Duchene doubled the Canadian advantage late in the second period, jumping on a bouncing puck to make it 2-0, with assists going to Perry and the debuting Ryan Ellis (Freelton, Ont./Nashville, NHL).

The third period was all Canada; it outshot France 20-5 in the final frame and scored twice to pull away.

A low slap shot from Stone rebounded all the way out to the hashmarks to set up Scheifele’s second goal of the tournament at 3:51, and Perry finished off a no-look pass from Ryan O’Reilly (Varna, Ont./Buffalo, NHL) at 14:45 to cap a two-point performance on his 31st birthday.

Perry is the lone Canadian to record a point in all six games, and his eight points (four goals, four assists) leave him tied with Duchene and Taylor Hall (Kingston, Ont./Edmonton, NHL) for the team lead.

Canada has been a defensive juggernaut, allowing only four goals in six games and recording three shutouts, tying the modern-day (since 1977) record set in 1997 and equaled last year.

LE CANADA BLANCHIT LA FRANCE ET CONSERVE SA FICHE IMMACULÉE AU MONDIAL

DAVID BRIEN
