CANADA FALLS IN GAME 2 OF WOMEN’S U18 SERIES

WENDY GRAVES

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) and Édith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Laval, QCME) provided steady goaltending but Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team couldn’t find its offence Friday night and dropped a 2-0 decision to the United States in the second part of their three-game series.

The series is now tied at a game apiece, with the winner-take-all finale going Sunday morning (10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT).

Too many penalties proved to be Canada’s downfall. The team was called for nine minor infractions, preventing it from putting together any sustained offensive threat.

In a sign of the struggles to come, Canada registered only a single shot on a power play just 34 seconds into the game, then couldn’t pressure the American defence on nearly a minute of a five-on-three advantage nine minutes in.

The team seemed to finally find its stride in the second half of the opening period, putting together several quality rushes before luck went against it.

With several players from both teams in front of the Canadian net, Taylor Wente was able to direct the puck past Neatby at 14:39.

The United States doubled its lead less than five minutes later.

Malia Schneider (Millarville, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, BCMAAA) and Julia Edgar (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) were called for simultaneous minor penalties as the period played on, giving the Americans two full minutes on the five-on-three. Canada came within 20 seconds of escaping unscathed. Catherine Skaja partially whiffed on her shot from in close, but got enough for the puck to be redirected to Presley Norby in front for an easy tap in.

Neatby made several keys stops in the second period – including a sprawling glove save near the midway mark – as the action played mostly in the Canadian zone, before giving way to D’Astous-Moreau halfway through.

A power play 15 minutes into the second provided the team the chance to take the momentum away from their opponents, but Canada failed to get a shot before a minor penalty of its own negated its man-advantage.

The United States came close to adding a third goal, but D’Astous-Moreau, after making a partial blocker save, pulled the puck off the goal line early in the final period.

Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) hitting the crossbar moments later was the closest Canada would come to finding the back of the net.

LE CANADA S’INCLINE DANS LE MATCH 2 DE LA SÉRIE DE L’ÉQUIPE FÉMININE DES M18

WENDY GRAVES

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.
