FIVE UNANSWERED GOALS GIVES CANADA U18 SERIES WIN

WENDY GRAVES

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Two days after its offence was stymied for 60 minutes, Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team had no problem finding the back of the net Sunday.

After falling two goals behind early, Canada responded with five unanswered goals – scored by five different players – to defeat the United States 5-2 and win the three-game series two games to one.

Canada has now won the annual series five years in a row and improves its overall game record against the Americans to 15 wins against 11 defeats.

Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL), Malia Schneider (Millarville, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, BCMAAA), Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL), Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask./Saskatoon, SFMAAAHL) and Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) all scored for Canada.

Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, BCMAAA) picked up two assists, giving her a team-leading four points in the three-game series. Julia Edgar (Oakville, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) and Codie Cross (Airdrie, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) added a helper each.

Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) picked up the win in the Canadian net.

On Friday night Canada registered shots only in the single digits in a 2-0 defeat. Sunday morning the team was aggressive right from puck drop, immediately making its presence felt around the American crease.

But it would be the United States opening the scoring, 9:38 in. Alex Woken got partially free for a breakaway, with Soroya Tinker’s (Oshawa, Ont./Durham West, PWHL) defensive effort drawing a whistle and the referee pointing to centre ice. Woken beat Neatby high blocker side on the penalty shot.

Before Canada could reset, the United States struck again only 26 seconds later. Neatby made a partial save on a driving Taylor Wente, but the puck trickled over the far goal line.

Canada took advantage of back-to-back power plays in the second half of the period to get back in the game. First, in the midst of sustained pressure down low, Watts put in the second chance. Only 1:08 later, Schneider went far glove side off the draw.

Fifteen minutes into the second period – with bodies moving in front of the net – O’Neill flipped a shot high that somehow went in for the eventual game-winning goal.

Canada added a pair of insurance goals in the third period. Shirley flipped a backhand in from the slot at the 11-minute mark. Just over five minutes later Maltais sealed the win from the wing.

CINQ BUTS SANS RIPOSTE DONNENT LA VICTOIRE DE LA SÉRIE DES M18 AU CANADA

WENDY GRAVES
