PATRICK SCORES SHOOTOUT WINNER, CANADA TO PLAY FOR HLINKA GOLD

BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) had the lone goal in the shootout, sending Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team to the gold medal game at the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup with a 2-1 semifinal win over Russia on Friday.

It’s the eighth consecutive year Canada has reached the final; it has won gold in each of the last seven.

Canada will face Sweden in Saturday’s final (11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT). The teams met Tuesday in preliminary round play, with Canada earning a 2-0 victory.

Stepping up as the first shooter, Patrick rifled a wrist shot over the glove of Vladislav Sukhachev, who was spectacular in getting his team to extra time.

Dylan Wells (St. Catharines, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) matched Sukhachev save for save through regulation and overtime and went one better in the shootout, stopping Igor Shvyrev, Nikita Makeev and Gergii Ivanov.

It was the Russians who opened the scoring against the flow of play in the final minute of the first period; a bouncing puck in the slot ended up on the stick of German Rubtsov, who knocked it past Wells for a 1-0 lead.

Canada didn’t waste much time pulling even, tying the game just 5:44 into the second when Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) found Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) for a tap-in at the side of the Russian goal.

The goaltenders stole the show after that, turning away shot after shot from two very good offences through the next 39 minutes to set up an exciting shootout finish.

Wells got his right pad on attempts by Shvyrev and Makeev, and poke-checked the puck from Ivanov to clinch the Canadian win. Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) and Dillon Dubé (Cochrane, Alta./Kelowna, WHL) both missed on their attempts for Canada.

BRECLAV, République tchèque – Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL) a marqué l’unique but des tirs de barrage, menant l’équipe nationale masculine estivale des moins de 18 ans du Canada au match pour la médaille d’or de la Coupe commémorative Ivan Hlinka des M18 2015 avec un gain de 2-1 sur la Russie en demi-finale vendredi.

C’est la huitième fois consécutive que le Canada atteint la finale; il a remporté l’or les sept dernières fois.

Le Canada se mesurera à la Suède en finale samedi (11 h HE/8 h HP). Les deux formations se sont déjà affrontées mardi en ronde préliminaire, le Canada l’emportant 2-0.

Prenant place comme premier tireur, Patrick a envoyé un tir du poignet au-dessus de la mitaine de Vladislav Sukhachev lequel a été spectaculaire en permettant aux siens de tenir bon jusqu’à la prolongation.

Dylan Wells (St. Catharines, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) a égalé la performance de son rival aussi bien en temps règlementaire qu’en prolongation, et ne l’a surpassé d’un arrêt que lors des tirs de barrage, bloquant les tentatives d’Igor Shvyrev, de Nikita Makeev et de Gergii Ivanov.

Ce sont les Russes qui ont finalement ouvert le pointage au cours de la dernière minute du premier vingt; une rondelle sautillante en zone privilégiée s’est retrouvée sur le bâton de German Rubtsov, qui l’a frappée derrière Wells, donnant une avance de 1-0 aux Russes.

Le Canada n’a pas tardé à créer l’égalité; avec seulement 5 min 44 s d’écoulées en deuxième, Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alb./Vancouver, WHL) a repéré Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) sur le côté du but russe et ce dernier a su dévier la rondelle.

Les gardiens de but ont volé la vedette dès lors, repoussant, au cours des 39 minutes suivantes, tous les tirs provenant de très bons trios offensifs, préparant ainsi la table à une conclusion palpitante en tirs de barrage.

Wells a bloqué les tirs de Shvyrev et de Makeev de sa jambière droite et a harponné la rondelle devant Ivanov pour sceller la victoire du Canada. Tyson Jost (Kelowna, C.-B./Penticton, BCHL) et Dillon Dubé (Cochrane, Alb./Kelowna, WHL) ont tous deux raté leur tir du côté canadien.
