U.S. SCORES FOUR IN FIRST, HOLDS ON TO BEAT CANADA WHITE

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Grant Mismash scored twice in a four-goal first period, leading the United States to its 15th straight preliminary round victory at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, 7-5 over Canada White on Monday afternoon.

The win leaves the Americans as the last remaining undefeated team in Group A.

Down by a goal in the dying minutes, Canada White had its chances to pull even, including a pair of posts and a glorious chance with the extra attacker on, but suffered its first loss.

The U.S. came out with jump in the first period, and took the early lead when Scott Reedy knocked home a rebound just past the three-minute mark.

Just over two minutes after that it was the Canadians striking back; Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) ripped a shot that Owen Tippett (Peterborough, Ont./Mississauga, Ont.) perfectly redirected past U.S. netminder Adam Scheel.

The Americans responded with three goals in just over 10 minutes; Mismash went top shelf at 6:32, Joey Cassetti went five-hole on a shorthanded two-on-none at 12:20, and Mismash found the loose puck out front and flicked it over the chaos in the Canadians crease for a 4-1 lead at 16:40.

White got one back late in the period when a shot from Evan Bouchard (Burlington, Ont./London, OHL) bounced neatly to Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alta./Spruce Grove, AJHL) who found the empty top corner to bring the Canadians within two after 20 minutes.

Matthew Struthers (Milton, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) set up Gabe Vilardi (Kingston, Ont./Windsor, OHL) to make it a one-goal game at 6:34 of the second, but the U.S. struck twice more before the end of the middle frame, from Randy Hernandez and Josh Norris.

Midway through the third the Canadians pulled to within two when Bouchard set up Louis-Filip Côté (Laurier-Station, Que./Rouyn-Noranda, QMJHL), and Vilardi set up Greg Meireles (Ottawa, Ont./Ottawa, CCHL) to set up the exciting finish.

After a couple of wild rushes by White into the American zone, Evan Barratt clinched the three points for the Americans, hitting the empty net with six seconds to go.

The teams close out the preliminary round on Tuesday; Canada White takes on the Czech Republic in the early game (2:30 p.m. MT), followed by the U.S. facing Canada Black (7 p.m. MT).

DAWSON CREEK, C.-B – Grant Mismash a touché la cible deux fois au cours d’une première période de quatre buts de son équipe, menant les États-Unis à une 15e victoire consécutive en ronde préliminaire du Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans, par la marque de 7-5 contre Canada Blancs, lundi après-midi.

Avec ce triomphe, les États-Unis demeurent la seule formation invaincue dans le groupe A.

En retard par un but dans les dernières minutes, Canada Blancs a eu ses chances de créer l’égalité, frappant notamment deux fois le poteau et ratant une chance en or avec l’avantage d’un homme, mais a tout de même subi son premier revers.

Les Américains ont commencé le premier tiers en lion, prenant une avance rapide quand Scott Reedy a marqué sur un retour à la troisième minute.

Un peu plus de deux minutes plus tard, les Canadiens ont répliqué; Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) a pris un tir qu’Owen Tippett (Peterborough, Ont./Mississauga, Ont.) a redirigé à la perfection derrière le portier américain, Adam Scheel.

Les Américains ont répondu avec trois buts en un peu plus de 10 minutes; à 6 min 32 s, Mismash a atteint le haut du filet, Joey Cassetti a faufilé la rondelle entre les jambières du gardien de but adverse lors d’un 2 contre 0 en désavantage numérique, à 12 min 20 s, et Mismash s’est emparé d’un disque abandonné devant le filet pour le loger dans le filet, alors qu’il y avait une circulation lourde dans l’enclave, à 16 min 40 s. C’était alors 4-1 pour les États-Unis.

Canada Blancs a compté un deuxième but en fin de période quand le tir d’Evan Bouchard (Burlington, Ont./London, OHL) a rebondi jusqu’à Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alb./Spruce Grove, AJHL) qui a tiré dans le coin supérieur pour réduire l’écart à deux buts avant le premier entracte.

Matthew Struthers (Milton, Ont./Owen Sound, OHL) a mis la table pour Gabe Vilardi (Kingston, Ont./Windsor, OHL), permettant aux Canadiens de s’approcher à un but à 6 min 34 s de la période médiane, mais les Américains ont répondu avec deux filets avant de retraiter au vestiaire, grâce au brio de Randy Hernandez et de Josh Norris.

À mi-chemin au troisième tiers, les Canadiens ont réduit l’écart à deux quand Bouchard a repéré Louis-Filip Côté (Laurier-Station, Qc/Rouyn-Noranda, LHJMQ), puis Vilardi a alimenté Greg Meireles (Ottawa, Ont./Ottawa, CCHL) pour rendre les choses corsées en fin de match.

Après quelques belles montées de Canada Blancs en zone adverse, Evan Barratt a confirmé l’obtention des trois points par les États-Unis en tirant le disque dans une cage béante, avec six secondes à écouler.

Les deux formations termineront leur ronde préliminaire mardi; Canada Blancs sera opposé à la République tchèque dans le premier duel (14 h 30 HR) et les États-Unis se mesureront à Canada Noirs (19 h HR).
