FARMER’S HAT TRICK LEADS U.S. PAST KOREA IN WSHC OPENER

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – Declan Farmer scored a hat trick and added an assist, and Josh Pauls had two goals and two helpers to pace the American offence as the United States opened defence of its World Sledge Hockey Challenge gold medal with an 8-1 win over Korea on Sunday.

Four other players had multi-point efforts for the Americans; Brody Roybal had a goal and two assists, Kevin McKee had three helpers, Nikko Landeros had a goal and an assist, and Billy Hanning added two assists.  

The U.S. opened the scoring just 5:17 in when Pauls, who scored the overtime winner in last year’s gold medal game, made his way around a Korean defender before sliding a shot past goaltender Man-Gyun Yu.

Landeros doubled the U.S. lead on the power play at 13:26, beating Yu from the hashmarks, but Byeong-Seok Cho redirected in a Seung-Hwan Jung pass just 20 seconds later to quickly get the Koreans back within one.

The Americans added to their lead only 1:58 into the second period off the stick of Farmer, and he added his second 6:31 after that, snapping a shot upstairs on Yu.

Roybal made it 5-1 late in the second period; his shot hit Yu, popped up in the air and trickled past the Korean netminder, sending the U.S. to the intermission with a commanding four-goal lead.

Farmer finished his hat trick just 37 seconds into the third period, Pauls added his second at 4:30, and Tyler Carron capped the scoring 49 seconds after that, beating Yu right off a won face-off by Farmer.

U.S. goaltender Steve Cash needed to make just seven saves to record the win, with the Americans outshooting Korea 22-8.

The U.S. will look to remain undefeated when it meets Russia in the early game Monday (noon AT), while Korea is back on the ice for the day’s late game at the Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre, taking on Canada (7 p.m. AT).

BRIDGEWATER, N.-É. – Declan Farmer, avec un tour du chapeau et une mention d’aide, ainsi que Josh Pauls, avec deux buts et deux mentions d’aide, ont mené l’offensive des États-Unis, qui ont amorcé la défense de leur médaille d’or au Défi mondial de hockey sur luge avec une victoire de 8-1 contre la Corée dimanche.

Quatre autres joueurs ont récolté plus d’un point dans le match du côté américain. Brody Roybal a inscrit un but et deux mentions d’aide, Kevin McKee a obtenu trois mentions d’aide, Nikko Landeros a inscrit un but et une mention d’aide et Billy Hanning a obtenu deux mentions d’aide.

Les États-Unis ont ouvert la marque après seulement 5 min 17 s de jeu lorsque Pauls, qui avait réussi le but gagnant en prolongation lors du match pour la médaille d’or l’an dernier, a contourné un défenseur coréen pour ensuite glisser la rondelle derrière le gardien de but Man-Gyun Yu.

Landeros a doublé l’avance des États-Unis en avantage numérique à 13 min 26 s, battant Yu depuis les lignes hachurées, mais Byeong-Seok Cho a redirigé une passe de Seung-Hwan Jung seulement 20 secondes plus tard, réduisant ainsi rapidement l’écart à un but pour la Corée.

Les Américains ont toutefois accru leur avance après seulement 1 min 58 s de jeu au deuxième engagement grâce à Farmer, qui a ensuite inscrit son deuxième du match 6 min 31 s plus tard en décochant un tir dans le haut du filet de Yu.

Roybal a donné les devants 5-1 à son équipe tard en deuxième période. Son tir a frappé Yu, pour ensuite bondir dans les airs et aboutir derrière le gardien coréen, ce qui a permis aux États-Unis de retraiter au vestiaire avec une confortable avance de quatre buts.

Farmer a complété son tour du chapeau dès la 37e seconde du dernier tiers, Pauls a ajouté son deuxième du match à 4 min 30 s, et Tyler Carron a couronné l’effort offensif de son équipe 49 secondes plus tard, trompant la vigilance de Yu immédiatement à la suite d’une mise au jeu remportée par Farmer.

Le gardien américain Steve Cash n’a eu besoin d’effectuer que sept arrêts pour mériter la victoire, son équipe ayant dominé la Corée 22-8 au chapitre des tirs au but.

Les Américains tenteront de demeurer invaincus lorsqu’ils affronteront la Russie dans le premier match de la journée lundi (midi HA), tandis que la Corée sautera de nouveau sur la patinoire pour disputer le dernier match de la journée au Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre contre le Canada (19 h HA).
