D’AGOSTINI GETS LATE WINNER, CANADA BEATS LUGANO FOR SPENGLER CUP

DAVOS, Switzerland – Matt D’Agostini (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./Genève-Servette HC, SUI) broke open a tie game with 11:47 to go, leading Canada’s National Men’s Team to a 4-3 win over HC Lugano and a 13th Spengler Cup championship on Thursday.

It’s the first time Canada has won the tournament since 2012, and the first time it’s been perfect since 2007.

Just over three minutes after Lugano had tied the game, D’Agostini took a feed from Aaron Johnson (Port Hawkesbury, N.S./Stockton, AHL) and hammered a one-timer through goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.

Keaton Ellerby (Strathmore, Alta./Barys Astana, KHL), Derek Roy (Rockland, Ont./SC Bern, SUI) and Tom Pyatt (Thunder Bay, Ont./Genève-Servette HC, SUI) had the other goals for Canada, and Chris DiDomenico (Woodbridge, Ont./SCL Tigers, SUI) added two assists.

Jeff Glass (Calgary, Alta./Dinamo Minsk, KHL) rebounded well after getting pulled in Canada’s semifinal win over HC Davos on Wednesday, making 31 saves to record the win.

It was the Swiss side that struck first when Gregory Hofmann beat Glass to the post on a wraparound just shy of the nine-minute mark, but Ellerby’s blast from the point tied the game seven minutes later.

Both teams ramped up the offence in the second period, combining for 31 shots on goal.

Roy gave Canada its first lead at 3:27, knocking in the rebound of a Cory Conacher (Burlington, Ont./SC Bern, SUI) shot, and Pyatt finished off a terrific set-up from DiDomenico at 5:00 to push the advantage to 3-1.

HC Lugano got one back before the end of the second period when Alessandro Chiesa went five-hole on Glass on a power play, and Hofmann’s second goal five minutes into the third tied the game and led to D’Agostini’s game-winner only a few minutes later.

Three players – Pyatt, captain Matthew Lombardi (Montreal, Que./Genève-Servette HC, SUI), and Daniel Vukovic (North York, Ont./Genève-Servette HC, SUI) – lifted the Spengler Cup for the second year in a row with a different team, having won the tournament last year with Genève-Servette HC; for Lombardi and Vukovic it’s a third-straight title after winning with Genève-Servette in 2013, as well.

The win caps off an impressive calendar year for Canada’s men’s teams in international competition; 2015 included gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship, IIHF World Championship, U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, World Junior A Challenge, and Spengler Cup.

DAVOS, Suisse – Matt D’Agostini (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./HC de Genève-Servette, SUI) a brisé l’égalité avec 11 min 47 s à jouer, et l’équipe nationale masculine du Canada a signé une victoire de 4-3 contre le HC de Lugano pour remporter un 13e championnat de la Coupe Spengler jeudi.

Il s’agit de la première fois que le Canada gagne le tournoi depuis 2012, et de la première fois qu’il conserve une fiche parfaite depuis 2007.

Un peu plus de trois minutes après le but égalisateur de Lugano, Aaron Johnson (Port Hawkesbury, N.-É./Stockton, AHL) a alimenté D’Agostini, qui a décoché un tir sur réception battant le gardien de but Elvis Merzlikins.

Keaton Ellerby (Strathmore, Alb./Barys Astana, KHL), Derek Roy (Rockland, Ont./SC de Berne, SUI) et Tom Pyatt (Thunder Bay, Ont./HC de Genève-Servette, SUI) ont inscrit les autres buts pour le Canada, et Chris DiDomenico (Woodbridge, Ont./Tigers de SCL, SUI) a obtenu deux mentions d’aide.

Jeff Glass (Calgary, Alb./Dinamo de Minsk, KHL) s’est bien repris après avoir été retiré du filet pendant la demi-finale du Canada contre le HC de Davos mercredi. Il a effectué 31 arrêts dans la victoire.

La Suisse a ouvert la marque grâce à un enroulé de Gregory Hofmann qui a battu Glass de vitesse tandis qu’il se déplaçait vers son poteau à tout près de 9 minutes de jeu, mais la puissante frappe d’Ellerby à la pointe a créé l’égalité sept minutes plus tard.

Les deux équipes ont augmenté la cadence à l’offensive en deuxième période, dirigeant un total de 31 lancers vers les gardiens.

Roy a donné une première avance au Canada à 3 min 27 s en s’emparant du rebond sur un tir de Cory Conacher (Burlington, Ont./SC de Berne, SUI), et Pyatt a complété une superbe séquence préparée par DiDomenico après cinq minutes de jeu pour donner une avance de 3-1 à son équipe.

Le HC de Lugano a réduit l’écart à un but avant la fin du deuxième tiers lorsqu’Alessandro Chiesa a déjoué Glass entre les jambières pendant un avantage numérique, et le deuxième de Hofmann à la cinquième minute du dernier engagement a ramené les équipes à la case départ, avant que D’Agostini n’inscrive le but gagnant seulement quelques minutes plus tard.

Trois joueurs – Pyatt, le capitaine Matthew Lombardi (Montréal, Qc/HC de Genève-Servette, SUI) et Daniel Vukovic (North York, Ont./HC de Genève-Servette, SUI) – ont soulevé la coupe Spengler pour une deuxième année de suite, mais au sein d’une équipe différente, puisqu’ils avaient remporté le tournoi de l’an dernier avec le HC de Genève-Servette. Dans le cas de Lombardi et de Vukovic, il s’agit en fait d’un troisième titre de suite, étant donné qu’ils s’alignaient avec Genève-Servette lorsque l’équipe a été sacrée championne en 2013 également.

Cette victoire couronne une année impressionnante pour les équipes masculines du Canada sur la scène internationale. En 2015, le Canada a remporté le Championnat mondial junior de l’IIHF, le Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace de l’IIHF, la Coupe commémorative Ivan Hlinka des M18, le Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans, le Défi mondial junior A et la Coupe Spengler.
