GROULX GETS SHOOTOUT WINNER, CANADA TO PLAY FOR YOUTH OLYMPICS GOLD

JASON LA ROSE

LILLEHAMMER, Norway – Benoît-Olivier Groulx (Gatineau, Que./Gatineau, LHMAAAQ) tied the game with less than four minutes to go before adding the winner in the shootout, sending Canada to the gold medal game at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games with a 4-3 semifinal win over Finland on Friday.

The Canadians will face either Russia or the United States in the final on Sunday (9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT); the Russians and Americans meet in the second semifinal later Friday.

Groulx beat Finnish netminder Jimi Uusitalo on Canada’s first opportunity in the shootout, and after Alexis Gravel (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Senators, GTHL) turned aside a pair of Finns, Ryan Merkley (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Jr. Canadiens, GTHL) clinched the extra-time victory.

Carson Focht (Regina, Sask./Regina, SMAAAHL) and Anderson MacDonald (Quispamsis, N.B./Saint John, NBPEIMMHL) had the other goals in regulation for Canada, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, and got a small measure of revenge for its semifinal loss to the Finns at the 2012 Youth Olympics.

Penalty trouble defined the first period for the Canadians, who took five minors in a span of 7:21, including two on the same play in the final minute of the opening frame.

Toni Utunen got Finland on the board first with seven seconds left in the first, converting on the two-man advantage, and Jesse Moilanen added another power-play goal just 30 seconds into the second period for a 2-0 lead.

Special teams got Canada back into the game when Focht scored shorthanded at 3:59, and MacDonald brought the Canadians even at 6:22, sending the game to the second intermission tied 2-2.

Gravel made arguably the biggest play of the tournament for Canada when he turned away Uula Ruikka on a penalty shot just 39 seconds after Jesperi Kotkaniemi had restored the Finnish lead, and Groulx tied the game 1:43 after that, forcing the shootout.

Finland finished with a 29-20 advantage in shots on goal in regulation time.
