BOBCATS ERASE THREE-GOAL DEFICIT TO EARN POINT AGAINST VITO’S

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Logan Ganie tied the game with 4:02 to go, finishing off a comeback from a three-goal deficit and giving the Lloydminster Bobcats a 3-3 tie with the Saint John Vito’s in Tuesday night’s tilt at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

Saint John held a 3-0 lead after Kyle Anderson scored 98 seconds into the second period, but the Bobcats battled back to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time all season.

Ganie made sure the Pacific Region champions earned a single point, getting a wrist shot through traffic and past Saint John goaltender Jake Stewart on the Bobcats’ 44th shot on goal.

Despite not getting the win, Stewart stole the show, making 42 saves, half of those in the first period; Lloydminster dominated the shots on goal, holding a lopsided 45-14 advantage.

The Bobcats carried the play in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting Saint John 21-6, but it was the tournament hosts who took a two-goal lead to the intermission.

The loud crowd at the qplex had the Vito’s going early, and they were rewarded with a power-play goal just 2:56 in; after a point shot made its way through traffic, Ben Reid knocked the rebound past Bobcats netminder Austin McGrath.

It was 2-0 just one second shy of the 11-minute mark after Ian Keating won an offensive-zone face-off to Anderson, whose shot was tipped in by Will Kelly.

Saint John’s sharpshooters struck again early in the second period; Anderson skated in from the blue-line and buried a cross-ice feed from MacDonald on another Vito’s power play.

But that was it for Saint John offence, and Tre Doyon got the comeback started at 13:51 of the middle frame, taking advantage of a turnover at the Vito’s blue-line and beating Stewart on a shorthanded breakaway.

Down 3-1 on the scoreboard but up 33-11 in shots entering the third period, the momentum was swinging in favour of the Bobcats, and Jaxan Kaluski carried the puck into the offensive zone and beat Stewart under the glove at 8:45 to make it a one-goal game, setting up Ganie’s late marker.

Lloydminster will continue chasing its first win on Wednesday afternoon in an all-Prairies showdown against the Saskatoon Contacts (4 p.m. AT), while Saint John faces the unbeaten North York Rangers in the day’s late game (7:30 p.m. AT).

QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – Logan Ganie a marqué le but égalisateur à 4 min 2 s de la fin, complétant une remontée après un déficit de trois buts et donnant aux Bobcats de Lloydminster un verdict nul de 3-3 dans leur affrontement contre les Vito’s de Saint John mardi soir à la Coupe TELUS 2016.

Saint John avait une avance de 3-0 après le but de Kyle Anderson à 98 secondes de la deuxième période, mais les Bobcats ont répliqué afin d’éviter de perdre deux matchs de suite pour la première fois de leur saison.

Ganie a veillé à ce que les champions de la région du Pacifique récoltent un point lorsque son tir du poignet s'est faufilé dans la mêlée et derrière le gardien de but de Saint John Jake Stewart sur le 44e tir au but des Bobcats.

Même s'il n'a pas obtenu la victoire, Stewart a volé la vedette grâce à une performance de 42 arrêts, dont la moitié de ceux-ci ont été réalisés en première période. Lloydminster a nettement eu l'avantage au chapitre des tirs au but avec un total de 45-14 en sa faveur.

Les Bobcats ont contrôlé le jeu pendant les 20 premières minutes, effectuant 21 lancers contre seulement 6 pour Saint John, mais les hôtes du tournoi ont tout de même retraité au vestiaire avec une avance de deux buts.

La foule bruyante au qplex a rapidement soulevé les Vito’s, qui sont parvenus à marquer en avantage numérique après seulement 2 min 56 s. Après qu'un tir du point d’appui ait traversé la mêlée, Ben Reid a saisi le retour pour loger le disque derrière le gardien de but des Bobcats Austin McGrath.

Le pointage est passé à 2-0 à une seconde de la 11e minute de jeu lorsqu'Ian Keating a gagné une mise au jeu en zone offensive lui permettant de remettre la rondelle à Anderson, dont le tir a été dévié dans le filet par Will Kelly.

Les francs tireurs de Saint John ont touché la cible de nouveau en début de deuxième période. Anderson s'est avancé de la ligne bleue pour marquer sur une passe transversale de MacDonald pendant un autre jeu de puissance des Vito’s.

Ce serait tout cependant pour l'offensive de Saint John, et Tre Doyon a amorcé la remontée des siens à 13 min 51 s du deuxième tiers lorsqu'il a profité d'un revirement à la ligne bleue des Vito’s, pour ensuite battre Stewart lors d'une échappée en infériorité numérique.

Tirant de l'arrière 3-1, mais dominant 33-11 au chapitre des tirs au but au début de la troisième période, les Bobcats ont fait tourner le match en leur faveur. Jaxan Kaluski s'est amené en zone offensive avec la rondelle, puis son tir a filé sous la mitaine de Stewart à 8 min 45 s, ce qui a réduit l'écart à un seul but, que Ganie a inscrit en fin de rencontre.

Lloydminster continuera sa quête d'une première victoire mercredi après-midi dans une bataille des Prairies contre les Contacts de Saskatoon (16 h HA), tandis que Saint John se mesurera aux Rangers de North York, qui sont toujours invaincus, lors du dernier match de la journée (19 h 30 HA).
