RANGERS BEAT BOBCATS, PUNCH TICKET TO TELUS CUP FINAL

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – William Calverley scored two goals and added an assist to lead the North York Rangers to a 5-3 semifinal win over the Lloydminster Bobcats on Saturday and clinch a berth in the gold medal game at the 2016 TELUS Cup.

The Rangers will face either the Lions du Lac St-Louis or Saint John Vito’s in Sunday’s final (5 p.m. AT on TSN).

It’s the second consecutive year a team from the Greater Toronto Hockey League has advanced to play for gold; the Toronto Young Nationals won the national title last year in Rivière-du-Loup, Que.

James Turner and Mark Perone had a goal and an assist each, Sean Josling also scored, and Aidan Casey added two assists for North York, which avenged its preliminary-round loss to Lloydminster on Friday.

Parker Saretsky, T.J. Lloyd and Tristan Petrie scored for the Bobcats, who erased a 3-1 deficit to tie the game late in the third period, but will play for the bronze medal on Sunday (noon AT).

North York started quickly, scoring twice in the first period; Perone’s wrist shot beat a screened Austin McGrath at 1:55, and Calverley tapped a rebound past the Lloydminster goaltender at 17:12.

The Bobcats got back within one just past the five-minute mark of the second period when Petrie snapped a rebound over the shoulder of North York goaltender Jett Alexander, but Josling took advantage of a friendly bounce off the end boards to restore the Rangers’ two-goal advantage on the power play at 14:36.

With time running out on Lloydminster’s TELUS Cup chances, T.J. Lloyd got the rally started when he beat a screened Alexander with a point shot at 8:49.

Saretsky tied the game at 15:37, knocking in a rebound, and Bryce Kindopp had a chance to put the Bobcats ahead with a breakaway chance just seconds later, but Alexander closed the five-hole to keep it 3-3.

The Rangers turned the Alexander save into a rush the other way, and Turner beat McGrath on a partial breakaway with a Lloydminster defenceman draped all over him, giving North York the lead for good with 5:35 remaining.

Alexander closed the door the rest of the way, turning back a number of scoring chances by the Bobcats, and Calverley sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 36 seconds to go.

QUISPAMSIS, N.-B. – William Calverley a accumulé deux buts et une aide pour mener les Rangers de North York à une victoire de 5-3 sur les Bobcats de Lloydminster en demi-finale samedi et ainsi se qualifier pour le match pour ma médaille d’or de la Coupe TELUS 2016. 

Les Rangers croiseront le fer avec les Lions du Lac St-Louis ou les Vito’s de Saint John en finale dimanche (17 h HA sur TSN; en différé sur RDS).

C’est la deuxième année de suite qu’une équipe de la Ligue de hockey du Grand Toronto se qualifie pour le match pour l’or; les Youngs Nationals de Toronto ont remporté le titre national l’an dernier à Rivière-du-Loup, Québec.

James Turner et Mark Perone ont obtenu un but et une aide chacun, Sean Josling a aussi compté, et Aidan Casey a ajouté deux mentions d’aide pour North York qui a pu venger sa défaite aux mains de Lloydminster en ronde préliminaire vendredi.

North York a entrepris le match avec fougue, marquant deux fois au premier tiers; le tir du poignet de Perone a déjoué Austin McGrath, qui avait la vue voilée, à 1 min 55 s et Calverley a doublé l’avance en s’emparant d’un rebond à 17 min 12 s.

Les Bobcats ont réduit l’écart à un but peu après la cinquième minute de jeu en deuxième période lorsque Petrie a saisi un rebond pour décocher un tir par-dessus l’épaule du gardien de North York, Jett Alexander, mais Josling a profité d’un rebond contre la bande arrière pour rétablir l’avance de deux buts des Rangers pendant une supériorité numérique à 14 min 36 s.

Alors que les chances de Lloydminster de mettre la main sur la coupe TELUS s’amenuisaient, T.J. Lloyd a amorcé la remontée en profitant d’un écran devant Alexander pour compter de la pointe à 8 min 49 s.

Saretsky a créé l’égalité à 15 min 37 s après s’être emparé d’un rebond. Bryce Kindopp a eu l’occasion de donner l’avance aux Bobcats quelques secondes plus tard lorsqu’il s’est avancé en échappée, mais Alexander a collé ses jambières pour bloquer le tir et préserver l’égalité de 3-3.

Les Rangers ont relancé l’attaque à la suite de l’arrêt d’Alexander et Turner a déjoué McGrath lors d’une échappée partielle alors qu’un défenseur de Lloydminster le couvrait littéralement pour donner l’avance pour de bon à North York alors qu’il restait 5 min 35 s au chronomètre.  

Alexander a tout bloqué par la suite, repoussant plusieurs occasions de marquer des Bobcats, et Calverley a scellé l’issue du match en faisant mouche dans un filet désert 36 secondes avant que retentisse la sonnerie finale.
