SANDSTRÖM AND DAHLSTRÖM LEAD SWEDEN OVER CZECHS

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – Felix Sandström was at his best for Sweden on Sunday afternoon, turning aside 32 of the 33 shots he faced to help Sweden beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in the opening game for both at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

While Sandström dominated the defensive zone, John Dahlström took care of the offensive one, as he was involved in all of the Swedish goals, finishing with a goal and two assists.

Sweden (1-0), the defending gold medallist, came out of the gate with the momentum, generating a number of chances early, and keeping the Czechs without a shot until the 11-minute mark of the opening period.

Linus Ölund was the only goal scorer of the first period, sending Sweden to the intermission with a one-goal lead, despite giving the Czech Republic (0-1) a pair of five-on-three advantages in the opening 20 minutes.

Both teams were anemic on the special teams, each going goalless on five opportunities with the man advantage. The Czechs came closest on a first-period power play, but the goal was called back as the referees ruled the puck had been kicked in.

After Dahlström doubled the Swedish lead early in the second period, David Kase pulled the Czechs back to within one at the 12:50 mark of the middle frame, setting up an exciting third period.

A 16-11 advantage in shots on goal in the final frame gave the Czechs multiple chances to tie the game, but Sandström – who was the Swedes’ back-up last year as an under-ager – stopped everything thrown his way in the third.

Oliver Erixon capped the scoring for Sweden with just one second left on the clock.

The Swedes won’t play again until Tuesday night (7 p.m. AT), when they face Quebec in North Sydney, while the Czechs head to Sydney, N.S., to take on Quebec on Monday afternoon (2 p.m. AT).

NORTH SYDNEY, N.-É. – Felix Sandström était en pleine forme dimanche après-midi devant le filet de la Suède, repoussant 32 des 33 tirs qu’il a affrontés pour aider la Suède à vaincre la République tchèque 3-1 lors du premier match des deux équipes au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2014.

Pendant que Sandström dominait en zone défensive, John Dahlström se chargeait de l’offensive, participant à tous les buts des siens en accumulant un but et deux mentions d’aide.

La Suède (1-0), médaillée d’or en titre, a entrepris le match à vive allure, créant plusieurs occasions de marquer tôt dans la rencontre et limitant les Tchèques à un seul tir au but jusqu’à la 11e minute de jeu du premier tiers.

Linus Ölund a été le seul à marquer en première période. Les Suédois sont donc rentrés au vestiaire avec une avance de 1-0 après une période malgré le fait que la République tchèque (0-1) avait eu deux supériorités numériques de 5 contre 3 au premier vingt.

Les unités spéciales des deux formations ont été anémiques, puisqu’aucune n’a su profiter de cinq avantages numériques. Les Tchèques ont bien failli inscrire un but en supériorité numérique en première période, mais le but a été annulé lorsque les arbitres ont conclu que la rondelle avait été bottée dans le filet.

Après que Dahlström a doublé l’avance des Suédois au début de la deuxième période, David Kase a réduit l’écart à un but pour les Tchèques à 12 min 50 s. La troisième période s’annonçait excitante.

Dominant 16-11 au chapitre des tirs au but au dernier tiers, les Tchèques ont eu plusieurs occasions de niveler la marque, mais Sandström – qui était le gardien substitut de la Suède l’an dernier alors qu’il était sous-âgé – a tout bloqué.

Oliver Erixon a marqué le dernier but du match pour la Suède alors qu’il restait une seconde au chronomètre.

Le prochain match de la Suède aura lieu mardi soir (19 h HA) contre le Québec à North Sydney tandis que la République tchèque sera de retour sur la glace lundi après-midi pour affronter le Québec à Sydney, N.-É. (14 h HA).
