WHITE, BRACCO LEAD UNITED STATES PAST ATLANTIC

SYDNEY, N.S. – Colin White had two goals and three assists and Jeremy Bracco scored twice as the United States defeated Atlantic 9-1 at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on New Year’s Eve.

Auston Matthews, Luke Kunin, Christian Evers, Luke Kirwan and Christian Fischer also scored for the Americans. Brendan Warren and Caleb Jones added two assists a piece.

Kyle Ward (Sackville, N.B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) scored the lone goal for Atlantic. Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) and Adam Holwell (St. John’s, N.L./Moncton, LHJMQ) had the assists.

White opened the scoring 3:41 into the first period. After picking up the puck just inside the blue line, he skated around a defender and fired a wrist shot past goalie Frederic Foulem (Dieppe, N.B./Stanstead College, Cdn. Prep).

The United States controlled play throughout the first period, and its dominance was rewarded at the 11:41 mark. Christian Fischer passed the puck off the side boards to Matthews in the low slot for a one-timer and a 2-0 American lead.

After Kunin made it 3-0 early in the second, two minutes later a point shot by Kirwan bounced off the glass right to the goalie’s doorstep, where Bracco was waiting to punch it in.

While Bracco’s goal was still being announced, the United States found the back of the net again. Foulem never saw Evers’ wrist shot from the top of the circle.

Kirwan made it 6-0 United States with a power play goal 14:30 into the second period. With the Americans controlling the attacking zone, White fed Kirwan between the face-off circles. A quick flick-of-the-wrist later the puck was hitting twine.

The home team finally gave the crowd reason to cheer four minutes into the third. With Atlantic on the power play, Ward finished a nice passing play to put his team on the board.

The Americans responded three minutes later on the penalty kill, with Bracco scoring his second of the game.

White, with a backhand in close, and Fischer, who pounced off a deflection off an Atlantic player’s chest, finished the scoring.

Atlantic next plays Germany on New Year’s Day in Sydney (2 p.m. AT). The United States gets Wednesday off before wrapping up its preliminary round against Ontario in Sydney on Thursday night (7 p.m. ET).

WHITE, BRACCO MÈNENT LES ÉTATS-UNIS À LA VICTOIRE SUR L’ATLANTIQUE

SYDNEY, N.-É. – Colin White a accumulé deux buts et trois mentions d’aide et Jeremy Bracco, deux buts, dans la victoire sans équivoque de 9-1 des États-Unis sur l’Atlantique au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans la veille du jour de l’An.

Auston Matthews, Luke Kunin, Christian Evers, Luke Kirwan et Christian Fischer ont aussi fait mouche pour les Américains. Brendan Warren et Caleb Jones ont obtenu deux mentions d’aide chacun.

Kyle Ward (Sackville, N.-B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) a réussi le seul but de l’Atlantique avec l’aide d’Alexandre Jacob (Dieppe, N.-B./Moncton, NBPEIMMHL) et d’Adam Holwell (St. John’s, T.-N.-L./Moncton, LHJMQ).

White a ouvert la marque à 3 min 41 s de la première période. Après avoir récupéré la rondelle juste en deçà de la ligne bleue, il a contourné un joueur à la défensive et décoché un tir des poignets qui a déjoué le gardien de but Frederic Foulem (Dieppe, N.-B./Collège Stanstead, école privée canadienne).  

Les États-Unis ont contrôlé le jeu tout du long du premier tiers et leur domination a été récompensée à 11 min 41 s. Christian Fischer a remis la rondelle à Matthews dans le bas de la zone privilégiée et ce dernier a décoché un tir sur réception qui a doublé la marque à 2-0 pour les Américains.

Kunin a creusé l’écart à 3-0 au début du deuxième vingt. Deux minutes plus tard, un tir de la pointe de Kirwan a bondi sur la baie vitrée pour atterrir devant le gardien de but où Bracco n’a eu qu’à pousser la rondelle dans le filet.

Alors que l’on annonçait le but de Bracco, les États-Unis ont fait mouche à nouveau. Foulem n’a jamais vu le tir des poignets d’Evers en provenance du haut du cercle.

Kirwan a porté la marque à 6-0 pour les États-Unis pendant une supériorité numérique à 14 min 30 s de la deuxième période. Alors que les Américains contrôlaient le jeu en zone offensive, White a effectué une passe à Kirwan placé entre les deux cercles de mise au jeu. Un mouvement rapide des poignets et le tour fut joué; les cordages vibraient à nouveau.

L’équipe locale a enfin réjoui les amateurs dans les gradins à la quatrième minute de la troisième période. Pendant que l’Atlantique profitait d’une supériorité numérique, Ward a mis fin à un beau jeu de passes pour enfin noircir la feuille de pointage pour son équipe.  

Les Américains ont répliqué trois minutes plus tard, cette fois en désavantage numérique quand Bracco a réussi son deuxième du match.

White, d’un tir du revers à bout portant, et Fisher, qui s’est emparé d’un tir dévié sur la poitrine d’un joueur de l’Atlantique, ont complété le pointage.

L’Atlantique disputera son prochain match contre l’Allemagne au jour de l’An à Sydney (14 h HA) tandis que les États-Unis ont congé mercredi avant de mettre fin à leur ronde préliminaire contre l’Ontario à Sydney, jeudi soir (19 h HA).
