TERRIERS BEAT CANADIANS FOR FIRST WIN, STAY ALIVE AT RBC CUP

VERNON, B.C. – Tayler Thompson scored the winner 14 minutes into the second period, helping the Yorkton Terriers keep their semifinal hopes alive at the 2014 RBC Cup with a 3-1 win over the Carleton Place Canadians on Wednesday afternoon.

The Terriers’ win means three teams – Yorkton, the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots and host Vernon Vipers – will battle for two semifinal berths when the preliminary round comes to an end Thursday.

Brett Boehm and Chase Norrish scored the other goals, both on the power play, for Yorkton (1-2), which has never failed to reach the semifinals in its four previous trips to Canada’s National Junior A Championship.

Riley Hunt added two assists in the win.

Kale Thomson bounced from after getting pulled from Yorkton’s 6-4 loss to Vernon on Monday night, stopping 25 of 26 to record the win in the Terriers’ goal.

Anthony McVeigh scored the lone goal for Carleton Place (2-2), which had already clinched a semifinal berth, but could have wrapped up second place with a victory in their preliminary round finale.

Despite being outshot 16-8 in the first period it was the Canadians who opened the scoring when McVeigh took a pass from Stephen Baylis on a shorthanded two-on-one and snapped a shot over Thomson’s glove midway through the opening frame.

Yorkton answered back just seconds shy of the halfway mark of the second period; from the left of Carleton Place goaltender Guillaume Therien, Hunt spun and fired a no-look pass across the crease and onto the tape of Boehm, who buried his second in as many games, on the power play, to pull the Terriers even.

Thompson got the game-winner less than four minutes later, finding a loose puck at the side of the Canadians’ goal and lifting a shot over a fallen Therien to give Yorkton its first lead.

Norrish added insurance on the man advantage 6:04 into the third period, rocketing a slap shot through a screen, off the cross bar and in past Therien.

The Terriers outshot Carleton Place in all three periods, and finished with a 37-26 advantage overall.

Yorkton wraps up the round robin Thursday afternoon when it faces the Dauphin Kings in a rematch of the Western Canada Cup final (2 p.m. PT), while the Canadians will wait for Thursday to play out before it learns who it will face in Saturday’s semifinals.

VERNON, C.-B. – Tayler Thompson a marqué le but gagnant à la 14e minute de la deuxième période pour aider les Terriers à vaincre les Canadians de Carleton Place 3-1 mercredi après-midi, continuant d’entretenir leurs espoirs de participer aux demi-finales de la Coupe RBC 2014.

La victoire des Terriers signifie que trois équipes s’affronteront pour deux places en demi-finales : Yorkton, les Patriots  de Toronto Lakeshore et les hôtes, les Vipers de Vernon, jeudi pour marquer la fin de la ronde préliminaire.
 
Brett Boehm et Chase Norrish ont compté les deux autres buts de Yorkton (1-2) en avantage numérique. L’équipe a toujours décroché une place en demi-finales lors de ses quatre participations précédentes au Championnat national junior A du Canada.

Riley Hunt a récolté deux aides dans la victoire.

Après avoir été retiré du filet de Yorkton à la suite d’une défaite de 6-4 contre Vernon lundi soir, Kale Thomson s’est relevé pour arrêter 25 des 26 tirs au but portant la victoire à sa fiche.

Anthony McVeigh a marqué l’unique but de Carleton Place (2-2), qui participe déjà aux demi-finales, mais qui aurait pu s’assurer de la deuxième place en remportant son match final en ronde préliminaire.

Les Canadians, malgré un retard de 16-8 au chapitre des tirs au but, ont ouvert la marque quand McVeigh a capté une passe de Stephen Baylis lors d’un deux contre un en infériorité numérique et a dirigé son tir au‑dessus de la mitaine de Thomson au milieu du premier tiers.

Yorkton a riposté quelques secondes avant la moitié du deuxième vingt; Hunt a récupéré la rondelle à  la gauche de Guillaume Therien, le gardien de but de Carleton Place, et a décoché un tir aveugle à travers l’enceinte et jusque sur la lame de Boehm, qui a récolté son deuxième but en deux matchs, en avantage numérique, nivelant la marque pour les Terriers.

À peine quatre minutes plus tard, Thomson a marqué le but gagnant après avoir récupéré une rondelle libre à côté du filet des Canadians avant de la loger au-dessus de Therien, qui était tombé, et donner une première avance à Yorkton.

À 6 min 4 s de la troisième période, Norish a confirmé l’avance de son équipe en avantage numérique en dirigeant un tir puissant à travers un écran. La rondelle a bondi sur la barre transversale et jusque dans le filet de Therien.

Les Terriers ont surclassé Carleton Place au chapitre des tirs au but pendant la durée du match, terminant avec un avantage de 37-26.

Yorkton clôturera le tournoi à la ronde jeudi après-midi quand l’équipe se mesurera aux Kings de Dauphin, une répétition de la finale de la Coupe de l’Ouest canadien (14 h HP), tandis que les Canadians devront attendre jeudi soir avant de savoir quelle équipe ils rencontreront en demi-finales samedi.
