GENERALS REWARD LOCALS WITH THIRD PERIOD RALLY EN ROUTE TO TIE

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Dawson Davidson and Ben Verrall scored 57 seconds apart midway through the third period, helping the host Moose Jaw Generals earn a 2-2 tie with the Halifax McDonald’s in the opening game for both Monday at the 2014 TELUS Cup.

The Generals earned only a single point despite outshooting Halifax 40-14, including 15-1 in the third period.

Macs goaltender Justin Ritcey, back for his second consecutive appearance at Canada’s National Midget Championship after playing for the Valley Wildcats last year in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., was the story, finishing with 38 saves, many of the spectacular variety.

Jordan Yochoff and Luc Poirier had the goals for Halifax, which is now 3-1-1 in all-time tournament-opening games at the national championship.

Yochoff added an assist for a two-point night.

The Macs took advantage of the Generals’ rust after a 45-day layoff, striking first just 5:25 in when Yochoff ripped a shot over the glove of Moose Jaw netminder Grant Naherniak.

Halifax took a physical approach in the early going, keeping the Generals hemmed into their own zone for long stretches of time in the opening minutes, taking advantage of a team that hadn’t seen game action in more than six weeks.

Despite the early pressure, it was the Generals who took a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal into the first intermission.

Halifax struck quickly in the second period – on its first shot – to double its lead; Yochoff fed Poirier on a two-on-one, leaving the Macs’ leading regular season scorer with nothing but an empty net to shoot at.

Once again, though, it was Moose Jaw who carried the play, outshooting the Atlantic Region champions 13-7 in the middle frame, and 25-13 through 40 minutes.

The Generals’ offensive show continued in the third period, but time and time again Ritcey was there to slam the door, keeping his team’s two-goal advantage intact.

But finally, at the 8:43 mark, the Generals broke through, and it was Davidson getting the pro-Moose crowd out of its seats, toe-dragging around a Macs defenceman before going five-hole on Ritcey for the 2-1 goal.

Fifty-seven seconds later the game was tied, with Verrall blasting a drop pass from Josh Miller that went off the shin of a Halifax defender and past Ritcey.

At that point, the Macs had yet to register a shot on goal in the third period; that came with 3:02 to go, and was the lone Halifax shot in the final frame.

The Generals return to the ice at Mosaic Place on Tuesday night, facing the Okanagan Rockets at 7 p.m. MT, while Halifax takes on the Toronto Young Nationals at 4 p.m. MT in the middle game of the day

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Dawson Davidson et Ben Verrall ont touché la cible en l’espace de 57 secondes à mi-chemin au troisième tiers, aidant les hôtes, les Generals de Moose Jaw, à livrer un verdict nul de 2-2 aux McDonald’s de Halifax au premier match des deux formations, lundi, à la Coupe TELUS 2014.

Les Generals n’ont obtenu qu’un point malgré une domination de 40-14 au chapitre des tirs au but, dont 15-1 au troisième tiers.

Le gardien de but des Macs Justin Ritcey, à sa deuxième présence au Championnat national midget du Canada, après avoir joué pour les Wildcats de Valley l’an dernier à Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., a été l’histoire du match, terminant la soirée avec 38 arrêts, la plupart de façon spectaculaire.

Jordan Yochoff et Luc Poirier ont été les buteurs de Halifax, qui ont maintenant une fiche de 3-1-1 en match d’ouverture à cet événement national.

Yochoff a ajouté une aide pour une récolte de deux points.

Les Macs ont profité de la rouille des Generals, qui revenaient d’une inactivité de 45 jours. Halifax a compté à 5 min 25 s lorsque Yochoff a décoché un tir par-dessus la mitaine de Grant Naherniak.

Halifax a joué physique dès le départ, gardant les Generals dans leur zone pendant de longues minutes, profitant d’une équipe qui n’avait pas vu d’action depuis plus de six semaines.

Malgré la pression du début, les Generals ont obtenu 12 tirs contre 6 dans les 20 premières minutes.

Halifax s’est imposé rapidement en période médiane, dès le premier tir, doublant son avance. Yochoff a alimenté Poirier lors d’un 2 contre 1, laissant le meilleur pointeur de la saison régulière des Macs devant une cage béante.

Encore une fois, Moose Jaw a dominé, dirigeant 13 tirs au but vers le filet adverse contre 7 au deuxième vingt. Après 40 minutes, les Generals avaient l’avantage 25-13 à ce chapitre.

Le spectacle offensif des Generals s’est poursuivi en troisième période, mais Ritcey a fermé la porte, maintenant l’avance de deux buts de son équipe.

Finalement, à 8 min 43 s, les Generals ont fait mouche. Davidson a fait bondir les partisans de Moose Jaw, contournant un défenseur des Macs avant de battre Ritcey entre les jambières, portant la marque à 2-1.

Cinquante-sept secondes plus tard, le match était à égalité, alors que Verrall a décoché un tir à la suite d’une passe arrière de Josh Miller qui a heurté la jambe du défenseur de Halifax avant de se faufiler derrière Ritcey.

Les Macs n’ont dirigé qu’un seul tir au but au troisième tiers, avec 3 min 02 s à écouler.

Les Generals retourneront sur la glace de Mosaic Place mardi soir contre les Rockets d’Okanagan à 19 h HR, tandis que Halifax croisera le fer avec les Young Nationals de Toronto à 16 h HR dans le deuxième duel de la journée.
