BOZZO GETS HAT TRICK AS YOUNG NATIONALS DOUBLE UP GENERALS

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Marco Bozzo scored a hat trick, all on the power play, to lead the Toronto Young Nationals to a 4-2 win over the host Moose Jaw Generals on Wednesday night at the 2014 TELUS Cup.

The win moves Toronto (2-1-0) into a three-way tie for first place at four points, but the Young Nationals sit atop the standings since they’re the lone team to record multiple wins.

Jeremy Pullara also scored for Toronto, which got all four of its goals with the man advantage.

Steven Harland collected three assists, while Izzy Benigno turned in a 24-save performance for the win.

Dawson Davidson had both goals for Moose Jaw (0-1-2), which lost for the first time after opening Canada’s National Midget Championship with back-to-back ties.

The Generals actually found the scoreboard first, as Davidson took a pretty backhand saucer pass from Caleb Riess just inside the Toronto blue-line before picking the top corner over Benigno’s glove at 2:51.

Bozzo tied it just under seven minutes later; James Guest snuck down to the face-off dot on the power play before finding Bozzo, who was all alone in the slot and had to do nothing more than redirect the pass past Moose Jaw netminder Grant Naherniak.

With less than three minutes to go in the first period Bozzo would strike again with the man advantage, deftly redirecting Harland’s point shot past Naherniak.

Moose Jaw came out with a little bit of momentum to start the second period, holding Toronto without a shot for more than nine minutes, but the Young Nationals’ power play would convert again.

A tic-tac-toe passing play from Kaelan O’Flynn to Mack Graham to Pullara ended with Pullara spinning in the slot and sneaking a backhand just inside the post for a two-goal lead at 12:59.

Davidson pulled the Generals to within one 2:31 into the third period, lifting a wrist shot through traffic and past Benigno for his third goal of the tournament, tops among defencemen.

Despite sustained pressure for most of the third period – Moose Jaw outshot Toronto 13-9 in the final frame, and 26-24 overall – the Generals couldn’t find the tying goal, and Bozzo clinched the win with just 15 seconds to go.

On another Young Nationals power play, Harland stripped the puck before the Generals penalty killer could clear it and fed Bozzo, who hammered home a one-timer for the first hat trick of this year’s TELUS Cup.

Toronto looks to make it three wins in a row when it takes on the Grenadiers de Châteauguay at 4 p.m. MT, while the Generals meet the Prince Albert Mintos in a must-win all-Saskatchewan showdown at 7:30 p.m. MT.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Marco Bozzo a enfilé l’aiguille trois fois en avantage numérique, menant les Young Nationals de Toronto à une victoire de 4-2 contre les Generals de Moose Jaw, mercredi soir, à la Coupe TELUS 2014.

Avec cette victoire, Toronto (2-1-0) se retrouve à égalité avec deux autres équipes au premier rang avec quatre points. Cependant, les Young Nationals sont positionnés au sommet du classement, étant la seule formation avec plus d’une victoire.

Jeremy Pullara a également fait mouche pour Toronto, qui a inscrit ses quatre buts sur le jeu de puissance.

Steven Harland a cumulé trois aides, alors qu’Izzy Benigno a réalisé 24 arrêts dans la victoire.

Dawson Davidson a marqué les deux filets de Moose Jaw (0-1-2), qui a subi un premier revers, après deux matchs nuls de suite au début de ce Championnat national midget du Canada.

Les Generals ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage. Davidson a capté une superbe passe surélevée de Caleb Riess tout juste à l’intérieur de la ligne bleue de Toronto avant de loger le disque dans le coin supérieur par-dessus la mitaine de Benigno, à 2 min 51 s.

Bozzo a créé l’égalité moins de sept minutes plus tard. James Guest s’est déplacé vers le point de mise au jeu durant un avantage numérique avant de repérer Bozzo qui se trouvait seul dans l’enclave. Il n’a eu qu’à rediriger la passe derrière le cerbère de Moose Jaw, Grant Naherniak.

Avec moins de trois minutes à écouler au premier vingt, Bozzo a encore frappé sur le jeu de puissance, faisant dévier habilement un tir de la pointe de Harland derrière Naherniak.

Moose Jaw a amorcé la deuxième période sur les chapeaux de roue, empêchant Toronto de tirer au but pendant plus de neuf minutes, mais le jeu de puissance des Young Nationals a encore fait des siennes.

Un jeu de passes de Kaelan O’Flynn à Mack Graham à Pullara a permis à Pullara de tourner dans l’enclave pour tirer du revers tout juste à l’intérieur du poteau, donnant une avance de deux filets à son équipe, à 12 min 59 s.

Davidson a permis aux Generals de s’approcher à un but à 2 min 31 s du troisième tiers, décochant un tir des poignets dans la circulation pour tromper la vigilance de Benigno et obtenir un troisième but dans le tournoi, un sommet chez les défenseurs.

Malgré une pression continue pendant la majeure partie de la troisième période – Moose Jaw a dominé Toronto de 13 tirs contre 9 en troisième période et de 26 contre 24 dans la rencontre – les Generals n’ont pu inscrire le but égalisateur et Bozzo a confirmé la victoire avec seulement 15 secondes au cadran.

Lors d’une autre supériorité numérique des Young Nationals, Harland a jonglé avec la rondelle avant que l’unité de désavantage numérique des Generals puisse la dégager et a repéré Bozzo qui a décoché un tir sur réception, obtenant ainsi le premier tour du chapeau de la Coupe TELUS de cette année.

Toronto tentera de gagner un troisième match de suite face aux Grenadiers de Châteauguay à 16 h HR, alors que les Generals croiseront le fer avec les Mintos de Prince Albert dans un duel important opposant deux formations de la Saskatchewan à 19 h 30 HR.
