ANOTHER SHUTOUT FOR MICHASIW, MINTOS CLINCH FIRST PLACE

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Lane Michasiw made 17 saves for his second straight shutout, and the Prince Albert Mintos clinched first place in the preliminary round at the 2014 TELUS Cup with a 3-0 win over the Halifax McDonald’s on Friday afternoon.

The Mintos will play in Saturday’s early semifinal (2 p.m. MT); they won’t know who they play until after the Moose Jaw-Châteauguay preliminary round finale on Friday night.

Jared Blaquiere, Teal Sobkowicz and Kody White had the goals for Prince Albert (3-0-2), who set a pair of TELUS Cup records with the victory.

The Mintos allowed just three goals in five preliminary round games, one fewer than the previous record held by Red Deer in 2007, and they’re now unbeaten in 19 games at Canada’s National Midget Championship, eclipsing the 18-game run by Ste-Foy from 1978-80.

Michasiw was far less busy than his previous two starts, when he made 35 and 30 saves against Châteauguay and Moose Jaw, respectively.

The Prince Albert goaltender finished the preliminary round with sparkling numbers: a 2-0-1 record, 0.33 goals-against average and .988 save percentage.

White opened the scoring just past the 13-minute mark of the first period, pushing the puck through a Halifax forward before picking the corner over the glove of Macs goaltender Justin Ritcey.

After a scoreless second period, the Mintos struck quickly in the third; a shot from Ryan Duret rebounded to the side of the goal and onto the stick of Sobkowicz, and the Prince Albert captain buried the 2-0 goal into the empty net.

The extra insurance came four minutes after that; Dakota Boutin picked up a loose puck and found Blaquiere with a beautiful spinning pass, and Blaquiere beat Ritcey far to the blocker side.

Despite the loss, Ritcey finished his second consecutive TELUS Cup appearance with a strong performance, making 26 saves as Halifax (1-3-1) was outshot 29-17. 

Neither team found success with the power play; Prince Albert was scoreless in two opportunities, while Halifax went without a goal on all three of its chances.

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Lane Michasiw a effectué17 arrêts pour réussir son deuxième jeu blanc consécutif, et les Mintos de Prince Albert ont conclu la ronde préliminaire en première place à la Coupe TELUS 2014 avec un gain de 3-0 aux dépens des McDonald’s de Halifax, vendredi après-midi.

Les Mintos seront du premier match de demi-finale samedi (14 h HR); ils ne connaîtront leurs adversaires qu’après le dernier match de la ronde des préliminaires entre Moose Jaw et Châteauguay vendredi soir.

Les Mintos n’ont accordé que trois buts au cours des cinq matchs de la ronde préliminaire, un de moins que le record précédent établi par Red Deer en 2007, et ils sont maintenant invaincus en 19 rencontres au Championnat national midget du Canada, éclipsant le record précédent de 18 matchs de Sainte-Foy datant des années 1978-1980.

Michasiw a été beaucoup moins occupé qu’au cours de ses deux derniers matchs où il avait dû bloquer 35 et 30 tirs contre Châteauguay et Moose Jaw respectivement.

Le gardien de but de Prince Albert a conclu la ronde préliminaire avec une fiche étincelante de 2-0-1, une moyenne de buts contre de 0,33 et un pourcentage d’arrêts de 0,988.

White a ouvert le pointage juste après la marque des 13 minutes en première période, poussant la rondelle et déjouant un joueur d’avant de Halifax avant de la récupérer et de placer son tir dans le coin au-dessus de la mitaine du gardien de but Justin Ritcey.

Après un deuxième tiers sans but, les Mintos ont marqué rapidement en troisième; un tir de Ryan Duret a rebondi sur le côté de la cage et sur le bâton de Sobkowic; le capitaine de Prince Albert a tiré dans un filet abandonné portant le compte à 2-0.

L’assurance supplémentaire est venue quatre minutes plus tard; Dakota Boutin s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre et a effectué une magnifique passe tournoyante à Blaquiere qui a battu Ritcey du côté de son bloqueur.

Malgré cette défaite, Ritcey met fin à sa deuxième présence consécutive à la Coupe TELUS avec un solide rendement, ayant réussi 26 arrêts alors que Halifax (1-3-1) a été surpassée 29 à 17 dans la colonne des tirs au but.

Aucune de deux équipes n’a su tirer profit des avantages numériques; Prince Albert n’a inscrit aucun but en deux occasions, alors que Halifax a échoué à ses trois occasions.
