ONTARIO CRUISES BY SWEDEN TO TAKE FIFTH AT U17S

NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. – Gold was the goal for both Ontario and Sweden at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, but instead the teams met Friday afternoon in the fifth-place game, with the Canadian side earning a 6-3 win.

Dylan Strome (Missisauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) and Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL) had two goals apiece for Ontario, with Mitchell Vande Sompel (London, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) and Brett McKenzie (Vars, Ont./North Bay, OHL) adding singles.

Lucas Carlsson, Anton Kalte and Rasmus Asplund answered for the Swedes, who finished sixth one year after winning their first-ever under-17 gold medal in Victoriaville, Que.

Ontario benefited from an early power play, with Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) and Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) playing give-and-go before finding Vande Sompel for the 1-0 goal three minutes in.

Carlsson answered for Sweden minutes later when he picked up a shot that went wide and buried the backboard rebound past Ben Blacker (Oakville, Ont./Milton, OJHL).

McKenzie and Crouse added first-period goals for Ontario, while Swedish forward Anton Kalte made it 3-2 heading into the first intermission.

Up only a goal despite outshooting the Swedes 17-6, Ontario head coach Roger Hunt shook things up to begin the second period, replacing Blacker with Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont./Sudbury, OHL), who stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes.

Knott opened the second period with his second of three assists on the day, feeding Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL), who shredded a Swedish defender with a highlight reel under-the-stick deke before feeding a perfect one-timer pass to Dylan Strome (Missisauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) to make it 4-2.

Crouse made it 5-2 with his second at 8:45, giving Ontario its biggest lead at three goals.

Asplund ended a run of three straight Ontario goals in the final minute of the second period, but Strome’s second goal and third point capped the scoring midway through final frame.

Ontario scored twice on eight power play opportunities, while the Swedes had just one chance with the man advantage.

The Canadians outshot Sweden 42-24.

NORTH SYDNEY, N.-É. – L’or était l’objectif autant pour l’Ontario que pour la Suède au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans, mais les équipes se sont plutôt affrontées pour la cinquième place vendredi après-midi et l’équipe canadienne a gagné 6-3.

Dylan Strome (Missisauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) et Lawson Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL) ont chacun inscrit deux buts pour l’Ontario, et Mitchell Vande Sompel (London, Ont./Oshawa, OHL) et Brett McKenzie (Vars, Ont./North Bay, OHL) ont ajouté chacun un but.

Lucas Carlsson, Anton Kalte et Rasmus Asplund ont répliqué chez les Suédois. Ces derniers ont obtenu la sixième place un an après avoir touché l’or au Défi mondial des moins de 17 ans à Victoriaville au Québec.

L’Ontario a su tirer profit d’un avantage numérique hâtif, lorsque Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL) et Graham Knott (Holland Landing, Ont./Niagara, OHL) ont effectué un passe et va avant de remettre la rondelle à Vande Sompel qui a marqué le premier du match après trois minutes de jeu.

Carlsson a réagi quelques minutes plus tard pour la Suède lorsqu’il a saisi un lancer imprécis et placé le rebond venu de la bande du fond juste derrière Ben Blacker (Oakville, Ont./Milton, OJHL).

McKenzie et Crouse ont ajouté des buts pour l’Ontario en première période, alors que l’avant suédois Anton Kalte a remonté le compte à 3-2 tout juste avant le premier entracte.

Bien que les Ontariens ont dominé quant aux tirs, 17-6 aux dépens des Suédois, leur avance n’était que d’un but, faisant réagir l’entraîneur-chef de la formation, Roger Hunt, qui a brassé les cartes et remplacé Blacker par Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont./Sudbury, OHL), lequel a bloqué 17 des 18 tirs décochés en sa direction au cours des quarante dernières minutes.

Knott a ouvert le pointage de la période médiane avec sa deuxième de trois mentions d’aide de la journée, aidant son coéquipier Mitchell Marner (Thornhill, Ont./London, OHL), qui a mis en pièce un défenseur suédois en effectuant une feinte qui a passé la rondelle sous son bâton avant de fournir une passe parfaite pour un tir sur réception à Dylan Strome (Missisauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) qui a porté la marque à 4-2.

Crouse a élevé le compte à 5-2 avec son deuxième but à 8 min 45 s, procurant à l’Ontario une solide avance de trois buts.

Asplund a mis fin à une séquence de trois buts consécutifs pour l’Ontario dans la dernière minute de la deuxième période, tandis que le deuxième but de Strome, son troisième point du match, a clos le pointage du match à mi-chemin de la dernière période.

L’Ontario a su profiter à deux reprises de ses huit avantages numériques, alors que les Suédois n’ont profité que d’une occasion de cette nature.

Le bilan des tirs va aux Canadiens qui ont frappé 42 fois alors que les Suédois ont été limités à 24 tirs.
