GOLD WINGS SNEAK BY ROCKETS

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Madison Colbow (Estevan, Sask.), Whitney Thorp (Regina, Sask.) and Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.) scored the goals, Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) supplied the big saves and the Weyburn Gold Wings defeated the Moncton Rockets 3-2 on Thursday afternoon at the Esso Cup.

The win improved Weyburn’s record to 4-1, good for second place among the six teams.

Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, N.B.) and Samantha Woodworth (Hillsborough, N.B.) scored for Moncton, which fell to 1-4 and out of the playoff picture. Brianne Waterman (Memramcook, N.B.) turned aside 20 shots for the Rockets.

Coming into the day’s middle match-up, Moncton knew it needed to earn at least a point to have any chance at playing past today. And it got the start it needed.

Just over eight minutes in, Hallihan’s shot from in close hit Kish high, then continued in the air before falling behind Kish and in.

Weyburn pulled even two minutes later, when Colbow sent a rocket from the hash marks over Waterman’s far shoulder.

Thorp’s low slap shot from the face-off circle found the low post at 14:45.

Penalty trouble by the Gold Wings provided the Rockets an opening in the second. Given 30 seconds of five-on-three time, Moncton took only 10 seconds to pull even. Faith Steeves’ (Peticodiac, N.B.) centering pass from the goal line went off Woodworth and in.

Again, though, Weyburn responded quickly to a Moncton marker.

Bourassa scored her team-leading fourth goal by dragging the puck away from her defender and beating Waterman with a backhand.

Moncton was able to create few scoring chances the rest of the way.

“I think we kept them to the outside well,” Thorp said. “And Jane stood on her head for us. She’s always got our back when we don’t get them to the outside.”

Moncton’s best chance at tying things up – and securing that important point – came with eight minutes to play, when Caitlin Dempsey (Heward, Sask.) was sent off for four minutes for head contact.

Weyburn didn’t make it easy on itself in closing out the win, as Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) got called for boarding with Dempsey still in the box.

Weyburn now plays Sudbury in the semifinals on Friday. Thorpe says that the players know that four wins in five games – including an earlier 2-1 win over the Lady Wolves – guarantees them nothing.

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Madison Colbow (Estevan, Sask.), Whitney Thorp (Regina, Sask.) et Bailee Bourassa (Weyburn, Sask.) ont marqué les buts, Jane Kish (Weyburn, Sask.) a réussi les superbes arrêts et les Gold Winds de Weyburn ont défait les Rockets de Moncton 3-2 jeudi après-midi à la Coupe Esso.

Cette victoire a amélioré la fiche de Weyburn à 4-1, ce qui lui vaut la deuxième place parmi les six équipes.

Hayley Hallihan (Miramichi, N.-B.) et Samantha Woodworth (Hillsborough, N.-B.) ont marqué pour Moncton, dont la fiche de 1-4 l’exclut des éliminatoires. Brianne Waterman (Memramcook, N.-B.) a réussi à bloquer 20 tirs des Rockets.

En arrivant à cette rencontre de mi-journée, Moncton savait qu’elle devait au moins gagner un point pour se donner quelque chance de poursuivre sa participation au-delà d’aujourd’hui. Elle a obtenu le départ qu’elle espérait.

Après un peu plus de huit minutes de jeu, un tir à bout portant de Hallihan a frappé Kish puis a continué sa trajectoire dans les airs avant de tomber derrière la gardienne de but et dans le filet.

Weyburn a égalisé le compte deux minutes plus tard, lorsque Colbow a percuté un boulet à partir des lignes hachurées juste au-dessus de l’épaule de Waterman.

Un tir frappé de Thorp du cercle de mise au jeu a frappé le poteau inférieur à 14 min 45 s.

Plusieurs punitions aux Gold Wings ont donné une ouverture aux Rockets au deuxième tiers. Avec 30 secondes de jeu à cinq contre trois, Moncton n’a eu besoin que de 10 secondes pour créer l’égalité. Une passe au centre à Faith Steeves (Peticodiac, N.-B.) à partir de la ligne des buts a dévié sur Woodworth puis est entrée dans le filet.

Encore une fois, Weyburn allait réagir rapidement à un but de Moncton.

Bourassa, la meilleure pointeuse de sa formation, a compté son quatrième but du tournoi en traînant la rondelle hors de la portée de la défenseure et en déjouant Waterman d’un tir du revers.

À partir de là, Moncton n’a pu créer que quelques occasions de marquer.

« Je crois que nous les avons forcées à l’extérieur », affirme Thorp. « Et Jane a fait l’impossible pour nous. Elle couvre toujours nos arrières quand nous n’arrivons pas à les repousser vers l’extérieur. »

Moncton a eu une occasion de créer l’égalité – et d’obtenir cet important point – alors qu’il ne restait que huit minutes à jouer, lorsque Caitlin Dempsey (Heward, Sask.) a écopé d’une punition de quatre minutes pour contact avec la tête.

Weyburn ne s’est pas rendu la vie facile pour gagner ce match puisque Cassidy Pirlot (Wauchope, Sask.) s’est vue imposer une punition pour avoir donné de la bande pendant que Dempsey se trouvait encore au banc des punitions.

Weyburn affrontera maintenant Sudbury en demi-finale vendredi. Thorp affirme que les joueuses savent que quatre gains en cinq matchs – dont un gain de 2-1 plus tôt contre les Lady Wolves – ne leur garantissent rien.
