GROPP SCORES WINNER LATE, CANADA BEATS GERMANY

IMATRA, Finland – Ryan Gropp (Kamloops, B.C./Seattle, WHL) broke a 2-2 tie with 5:36 to go, propelling Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team to a 5-2 win over Germany on Saturday at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship.

The win keeps Canada atop Group A with an unblemished 2-0 record, and improves its all-time record against Germany at the world championship to a perfect 8-0.

Daniel Audette (Blainville, Que./Sherbrooke, QMJHL), Conner Bleackley (High River, Alta./Red Deer, WHL), Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) and Jared McCann (London, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) had the other Canadian goals.

Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, B.C./Calgary, WHL) was the lone Canadian skater to record multiple points, picking up two assists.

Canada doubled up the Germans in shots on goal in the first period, holding a 14-7 advantage, but led only 1-0 on Audette’s goal at 6:37.

Germany tied the game 13:09 into the second period, off the stick of captain Andreas Eder, but Bleackley restored the Canadian advantage just 80 seconds later.

Maximilian Kammerer brought the Germans even once again 3:20 after Bleackley’s goal, capping a busy final seven minutes of the middle frame and sending the two teams to the second intermission tied 2-2.

The third period was all Canada, which outshot the Germans 20-5 in the final 20 minutes but couldn’t beat goaltender Daniel Fiessinger until Gropp converted a feed from Virtanen just past the 14-minute mark.

Konecny added insurance less than two minutes later, and McCann provided the final margin of victory, scoring with 35 seconds left.

Julia Billia (St-Léonard, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL) earned the win in his first start in the Canadian goal, making 21 saves.

Canada is right back to action Sunday in Imatra, taking on Slovakia (9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT).

GROPP MARQUE LE BUT GAGNANT EN FIN DE MATCH ET LE CANADA BAT L’ALLEMAGNE

IMATRA, Finlande – Ryan Gropp (Kamloops, C.-B./Seattle, WHL) a rompu une égalité de 2-2 alors qu’il restait 5 min 36 s à jouer pour aider l’équipe nationale masculine des moins de 18 ans du Canada à vaincre l’Allemagne 5-2, samedi, au Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace des M18 2014 de l’IIHF.

Cette victoire permet au Canada de rester au sommet du groupe A avec une fiche de 2-0 et de conserver sa fiche parfaite de 8-0 contre l’Allemagne depuis les débuts de ce tournoi.
 
Daniel Audette (Blainville, Qc/Sherbrooke, LHJMQ), Conner Bleackley (High River, Alb./Red Deer, WHL), Travis Konecny (Clachan, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) et Jared McCann (London, Ont./Sault Ste. Marie, OHL) ont marqué les autres buts des Canadiens.

Jake Virtanen (Abbotsford, C.-B./Calgary, WHL) a été le seul Canadien à accumuler plus d’un point; il a obtenu deux mentions d’aide.  

Le Canada a obtenu deux fois plus de tirs au but que les Allemands au premier tiers, soit 14-7, mais il n’était en avance que 1-0 à la suite du but d’Audette à 6 min 37 s. 

L’Allemagne a nivelé le pointage à 13 min 9 s de la deuxième période grâce au but du capitaine Andreas Eder, mais Bleakley a redonné l’avance au Canada seulement 80 secondes plus tard. 

Maximilian Kammerer a de nouveau nivelé la marque 3 min 20 s après le but de Bleackley pour mettre fin à sept minutes endiablées en fin de période. Les deux équipes sont donc rentrées au vestiaire à égalité 2-2.

Le Canada a complètement contrôlé la troisième période, dominant les Allemands 20-5 au chapitre des tirs au but, mais il n’est pas parvenu à déjouer le gardien de but Daniel Fiessinger avant que Gropp fasse mouche après avoir capté une passe de Virtanen peu après la 14e minute de jeu.

Konecny a ajouté un but d’assurance moins de deux minutes plus tard et McCann a inscrit le dernier but de la rencontre alors qu’il restait 35 secondes au chronomètre.

Julia Billia (St-Léonard, Qc/Chicoutimi, LHJMQ) a porté la victoire à sa fiche à son premier départ devant le filet canadien, effectuant 21 arrêts.

Le Canada sera de retour sur la glace dimanche à Imatra en Finlande où il se mesurera à la Slovaquie (9 h HE/6 h HP).
