CANADA’S QUARTER-FINALS CURSE CONTINUES

MINSK, Belarus – Iiro Pakarinen scored with 3:08 left in the third and Finland defeated Canada on Thursday in the quarter-finals of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The loss marked the fifth straight year that Canada’s National Men’s Team has fallen in the final eight.

Jori Lehtera took the puck from Tyler Myers (Calgary, Alta./Buffalo, NHL) just inside the Canadian blue line and found Pakarinen in the slot for the game-winner.

Juuso Hietanen and Olli Palola also scored for Finland. Pekka Rinne picked up the win.

Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C./Ottawa, NHL) and Mark Scheifele (Kitchener, Ont./Winnipeg, NHL) scored for Canada. Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, Alta./Edmonton, NHL) took the loss in net.

“I don’t think we played a bad game,” said Jason Chimera (Edmonton, Alta./Washington, NHL). “We were in their end most of the night. They play an opportunistic game, and they got a break and scored. It was one of those games where we outplayed them – it just didn’t go our way.”

Canada outshot Finland 37-24, controlled play most of the night and headed into the second intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Canada found the post on a handful of shots in the second and failed to score on five power play opportunities through the first 40 minutes.

“You get chances like that you got to put it in the back of the net,” said Chimera. “Rinne’s a good goalie and a big part of it, but it’s not an excuse – we got to score.”

Finland did a better job of capitalizing on its chances. Just 28 seconds into the third, Hietenan’s shot from a few feet inside the blue line squeaked through Scrivens’ blocker to tie the game.

A fortunate break also led to Finland’s first goal on a power play in the opening period. Joel Ward (North York, Ont./Washington, NHL) blocked Hietanen’s initial shot, but the puck rebounded to Palola in the face-off circle, where he went top shelf short side on Scrivens.

It was the fifth time in eight games that Canada’s opponent got on the board first. The team managed only four goals in the opening period during the tournament, but scored 15 times in the middle frame.

That trend continued Thursday.

After picking off the puck in the defensive zone, Turris passed off the boards to Matt Read (Ilderton, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL), whose return drop feed Turris stepped in to and blasted past Rinne.

With the teams playing four-on-four, a great individual rush from Scheifele gave Canada the lead 6:27 later. After stripping the puck from Petri Kontiola in the defensive zone, Scheifele brought the puck up ice and beat Rinne clean with a quick release from the face-off circle.

From there on, Rinne and a tight Finnish defence shut the door.

MINSK, Bélarus – Iiro Pakarinen a marqué alors qu’il restait 3 min 8 s en troisième période et la Finlande a battu le Canada jeudi en quart de finale au Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace 2014 de l’IIHF. C’est la cinquième année de suite que l’équipe nationale masculine du Canada s’incline en quart de finale.

Jori Lehtera a dérobé la rondelle à Tyler Myers (Calgary, Alb./Buffalo, LNH) juste en deçà de la ligne bleue du Canada et l’a remis à Pakarinen en zone privilégiée; ce dernier n’a pas hésité et a marqué le but gagnant.

Juuso Hietanen et Olli Palola ont aussi marqué pour la Finlande et le gardien de but Pekka Rinne a porté la victoire à sa fiche.

« Je ne pense pas que nous avons joué un mauvais match », a déclaré Jason Chimera (Edmonton, Alb./Washington, LNH). « Nous avons été dans leur zone presque toute la soirée. Ils sont opportunistes, ils ont obtenu une chance et ils ont marqué. Ce fut un de ces matchs où nous avons mieux joué – mais les choses ne se sont pas déroulées comme prévu. »

Le Canada, qui a dominé la Finlande 37-24 au chapitre des tirs au but, a contrôlé le jeu pour la majeure partie du match. Les Canadiens jouissaient d’une avance de 2-1 après deux périodes.

Quelques tirs du Canada ont heurté les poteaux en deuxième période et les Canadiens n’ont pu profiter de cinq supériorités numériques au cours des 40 premières minutes. 

« Quand vous avez des occasions comme ça, il faut mettre la rondelle au fond du filet », a dit Chimera. « Rinne est un bon gardien et une des raisons pourquoi nous avons échoué, mais ce n’est pas une excuse – nous devons marquer. »

La Finlande, elle, a su profiter de ses chances. À la 28e seconde du troisième tiers, un tir de Hietanen décoché à quelques pieds en deçà de la ligne bleue s’est faufilé du côté du gant bloqueur de Scrivens pour niveler la marque.

La chance avait aussi souri à la Finlande lors de son premier but en avantage numérique en première période. Joel Ward (North York, Ont./Washington, LNH) a bloqué un tir de Hietanen, mais la rondelle a bondi et s’est retrouvée sur la lame du bâton de Palola dans le cercle de mise au jeu. Son tir dans la partie supérieure du côté court a déjoué Scrivens.

C’était la cinquième fois en huit matchs que l’adversaire du Canada portait un but au tableau en premier. L’équipe canadienne n’a marqué que quatre buts en première période au tournoi, mais a trouvé le fond du filet à 15 reprises en deuxième.

La tendance s’est poursuivie jeudi.

Après avoir récupéré la rondelle en zone défensive, Turris a effectué une passe par la bande à Matt Read (Ilderton, Ont./Philadelphie, LNH), qui a remis la rondelle à Turris au moyen d’une passe arrière. Turris a alors décoché un puissant tir qui a trompé la vigilance de Rinne.  

Alors que les formations jouaient à quatre contre quatre, un superbe effort individuel de Scheifele a permis au Canada de prendre l’avance 6 min 27 s plus tard. Après avoir dérobé la rondelle à Petri Kontiola en zone défensive, Scheifele a remonté la patinoire et a déjoué Rinne d’un tir du cercle de mise au jeu.

Après cela, Rinne et la défensive de la Finlande ont fermé la porte.
