CANADA DROPS SUMMER CAMP FINALE TO CZECHS

DAVID BRIEN

MONTREAL, Que. – Canada couldn’t keep its unbeaten record intact in its finale at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp on Friday afternoon, falling to the Czech Republic by a score of 5-2.

Connor McDavid (Newmarket, Ont./Erie, OHL) and Bo Horvat (Rodney, Ont./London, OHL) scored the goals for Canada, which had outscored its opponents 17-7 in winning its first three camp games.

For the Czech Republic, David Pastrnak led the way with two goals and an assist, Patrik Zdrahal had a goal and a helper, and Jan Mandat and Marek Baranek had two assists apiece.

Zdrahal got the scoring started on a Czech power play with three minutes left in the first period, taking a cross-ice feed from Pastrnak and beating Canadian goaltender Eric Comrie (Edmonton, Alta./Tri-City, WHL).

The Europeans then struck twice more with the man advantage; Tomas Dvorak made it 2-0 with 38 seconds left in the opening period, and David Kampf pushed the lead to three just 46 seconds into the second.

Down 3-0, Canada needed a spark and got one from McDavid, who danced around a Czech defenceman and beat Miroslav Svoboda with a backhand-to-forehand deke just 1:18 after Kampf’s goal.

Pastrnak restored the three-goal advantage with the Czech’s first even-strength marker, but Horvat got Canada back to within a pair on the power play, finishing off a feed from Robby Fabbri (Mississauga, Ont./Guelph, OHL) at 16:45.

A penalty-filled third period produced just one goal, the second of the game from Pastrnak.

Comrie got the start in the Canadian goal, allowing four goals on 12 shots, before being replaced midway through by by Philippe Desrosiers (St-Hyacinthe, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL), who stopped 14 of 15.

Svoboda starred for the Czechs; the goaltender made 33 saves as his team was outshot 35-27.

LE CANADA PERD SON DERNIER MATCH DU CAMP CONTRE LES TCHÈQUES

DAVID BRIEN
