CANADA FALLS IN SEMIS, WILL PLAY FOR BRONZE AT U18 WORLDS

JASON LA ROSE

ZUG, Switzerland –Mitchell Stephens (Peterborough, Ont./Saginaw, OHL) brought Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team close in the third period, but the Canadians will play for bronze at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship after a 7-2 semifinal loss to the United States on Saturday.

Canada will face the loser of the Finland-Switzerland semifinal in Sunday’s bronze medal game (9 a.m. ET/6 a.m. PT), which can be seen live on TSN2.

Deven Sideroff (Summerland, B.C./Kamloops, WHL) had the other goal for the Canadians, who trailed 2-1 after two periods before the Americans pulled away in the final 20 minutes.

The first period belonged to Canadian goaltender Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL), who kept the game scoreless despite the U.S. holding a 15-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Clayton Keller got the scoring started for the U.S. just 2:25 into the second, cutting into the slot and beating Sawchenko on the backhand, but Sideroff made good on a Canadian power play just shy of the 11-minute mark, snapping a shot from the slot past U.S. netminder Evan Sarthou to tie the game.

Auston Matthews, the tournament’s leading scorer, gave the U.S. the lead for good with 2:02 left in the second period, and pushed the advantage to two with another goal just 2:23 into the third.

Colin White got his first of three goals in the period at 2:55, chasing Sawchenko from the net in favour of Evan Cormier (Bowmanville, Ont./Saginaw, OHL), who won both of his preliminary round starts.

The goaltending change seemed to spark the Canadians; Stephens fought his way into the American zone before absolutely roofing a backhand over the glove of Sarthou to make it a 4-2 game.

But a turnover behind the Canadian net ended up on the stick of Jordan Greenway, who restored the three-goal American lead just 21 seconds later, and White finished his hat trick with goals 2:36 apart to cap the scoring.

Canada will play for bronze for the fourth time in five years; it won the medal in 2012 and last year, and finished fourth in 2011.
