CANADA TO DEFEND SLEDGE WORLD TITLE AFTER SEMIFINAL WIN OVER RUSSIA

JASON LA ROSE

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) had a pair of goals – giving him nine in four games – and Adam Dixon (Midland, Ont.) got the winner, leading Canada’s National Sledge Team to a 3-2 semifinal win over Russia on Friday afternoon.

Canada, which won gold at the last world championship in 2013, will defend its world title in Sunday’s gold medal game (2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT) against either the U.S. or Norway, who meet later Friday.

It’s the fourth time the Canadians have advanced to the final at worlds; it won the gold medal in each of its three previous appearances (2000, 2008, 2013).

The story Friday was the power play; both teams finished 2-for-2 with the man advantage.

The Russians opened the scoring late in the first period when Ilia Volkov took a pretty pass from Dmitrii Lisov and beat a sprawling Corbin Watson (Kingsville, Ont.) for the first goal against Canada in the tournament.

Bridges pulled the Canadians even just past the midway mark of the second period with a terrific individual effort; outmuscling two Russian defenders, Bridges got off a shot that bounced off the arm and then pad of goaltender Evgenii Plotnikov before trickling over the goal line.

He gave Canada its first lead in the dying seconds of the middle frame, sneaking a shot under Plotnikov on a Canadian power play. At that point, Bridges had scored Canada’s last six goals over three games.

Nikolay Terentyev, who was in the penalty box when Bridges scored, took another minor just seven seconds after the goal, leading to Dixon’s eventual game-winner 17 seconds into the third period.

Vasilii Varlakov got the Russians within a goal with another power play marker at 8:13, batting a bouncing puck past Watson from the side of the Canadian goal, but that’s as close as they would get.

Watson was rock solid down the stretch, finishing with 10 saves, while Plotnikov made nine stops.

The win was a measure of revenge for Canada, which lost to Russia for the first time ever in the semifinals of the 2015 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Leduc, Alta., in early February.
