HOCKEY BACKGROUND

Hired as head coach of the NHL’s Dallas Stars on Jun. 21, 2013 after over 15 years as head coach in Buffalo … Head coach of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres from 1997-98 through early in the 2012-13 season … Was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL at the time of his departure from the Sabres, into his 15th season as the Buffalo Sabres’ head coach and  the 15th head coach in franchise history …  Ranks 12th all-time with 571 wins … The all-time winningest coach in Buffalo Sabres’ history, he is also the all-time leader in playoff games coached (101) and wins (57) … Runner-up to Vancouver’s Alain Vigneault for the 2007 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year … In 2006-07, helped Buffalo win its first Presidents’ Trophy, earning a franchise-record 53 wins … On April 5, 2007, he became the 31st coach in NHL history to record 300 career wins and the 16th in NHL history to reach this milestone with the same team … Named to the NHL All-Star Game on two occasions (1999, 2007) … Won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s coach of the year in 2006 … Led Buffalo to the Eastern Conference Final in 2005-06 … In his second season as head coach of Buffalo, 1998-99, led the Sabres to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 24 years … Only the third head coach under the present Stanley Cup playoff format to lead his team to the conference final in each of his first two seasons … Was an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers, under Roger Neilson, from 1993-97 … Was a player/assistant coach with the IHL’s San Diego Gulls in 1991-92 … Played 691 games in the NHL as a defenceman and left winger, recording 105 goals and 195 assists … Served as Buffalo’s captain from 1987 through 1989, replacing Gilbert Perreault … Was Buffalo’s second-round pick, 32nd overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft … Played junior hockey with the WHL’s Lethbridge Broncos from 1976-79

ANTÉCÉDENTS AU HOCKEY

Embauché comme entraîneur-chef des Stars de Dallas de la LNH le 21 juin 2013 après plus de 15 ans comme entraîneur-chef à Buffalo… Entraîneur-chef des Sabres de Buffalo de la LNH de 1997-98 jusqu’au début de la saison 2012-13… Au moment de son départ de Buffalo, était l’entraîneur comptant le plus d’ancienneté dans la LNH, ayant amorcé sa 15e saison comme entraîneur-chef des Sabres, étant le 15e entraîneur-chef de l’histoire de la franchise… Au 12e rang des entraîneurs de tous les temps avec 571 victoires… Au premier rang des entraîneurs de l’histoire de Buffalo au chapitre des victoires, il occupe aussi le premier rang pour le nombre de matchs éliminatoires (101) et de victoires en éliminatoires (57)… A terminé deuxième derrière Alain Vigneault de Vancouver pour le trophée Jack Adams 2007 à titre d’Entraîneur de l’année de la LNH… En 2006-07, a aidé Buffalo a remporté son premier Trophée du Président en établissant un record de la franchise avec 53 victoires… Le 5 avril 2007, il est devenu le 31e entraîneur de l’histoire de la LNH à remporter 300 matchs et le 16e à atteindre le plateau avec la même équipe… Nommé au match des étoiles de la LNH à deux reprises (2007, 1999)… A remporté le Trophée Jack Adams comme Entraîneur de l’année de la LNH en 2006… A mené Buffalo à la finale de la Conférence de l’Est en 2005-06… À sa deuxième saison comme entraîneur-chef de Buffalo en 1998-99, il a mené les Sabres à leur première participation en finale de la coupe Stanley en 24 ans… Seulement le troisième entraîneur-chef en vertu de la structure actuelle des éliminatoires à mener son équipe à la finale de la conférence à ses deux premières saisons… Entraîneur adjoint des Panthers de la Floride sous la direction de Roger Neilson de 1993-97… Joueur-entraîneur adjoint des Gulls de San Diego de l’IHL en 1991-92… A joué 691 matchs dans la LNH comme défenseur et ailier gauche, accumulant 105 buts et 195 aides… Capitaine de Buffalo de 1987 à 1989, remplaçant Gilbert Perreault… Choix de deuxième ronde de Buffalo, 32e au total, lors du repêchage universel de la LNH en 1979… A joué au hockey junior avec les Broncos de Lethbridge de 1976-79
