STRATHMORE GETS FIRST-EVER TELUS CUP WIN, BEATS HOST ALBATROS

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – Kyle Gordon had two goals and an assist to pace the offence, and the Strathmore Bisons earned their first win on Midget hockey’s biggest stage, hammering the Albatros du Collège Notre-Dame 7-1 in Tuesday’s final game at the 2015 TELUS Cup.
The Bisons handed Collège Notre-Dame the worst loss by a host team since the Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal routed the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars 9-2 in the preliminary round finale in 2013.
Gary Haden (goal and two assists) and Barrett Sheen (three assists) joined Gordon with three-point nights, and Trygve Many Guns, William Conley, Markus Lavallee and David Sheldon also added goals.
It was the tournament hosts who struck first, with Samuel L’Italien scoring shorthanded just 2:17 in. But that would be the lone puck to beat Strathmore goaltender Kurtis Chapman, who finished with 28 saves.
Many Guns tied the game with 3:29 left in the opening period, and it was all Bisons after that.
Haden got things going early in the middle frame, scoring on the power play just 93 seconds in. Then, Conley and Gordon converted back-to-back breakaway opportunities just 1:03 apart for a 4-1 lead for the Pacific Region champions.
Lavallee redirected an Austin Cameron shot from the top circle at the 11:32 mark – chasing Collège Notre-Dame goaltender Tristan Bérubé – before Gordon got his second of the period on the power play just 64 second after that, capping a busy second period for the Bisons.
Sheldon added one more goal in the third period, on one of five Strathmore power plays in the final frame.
The Bisons, who outshot Collège Notre-Dame 34-29, finished with three goals on 10 power play chances, while the Albatros went scoreless on eight opportunites with an extra skater.
Strathmore is back at it Wednesday when they take on the last remaining unbeaten team, the Regina Pat Canadians (4 p.m. ET), while the Albatros try to get back into the win column when they take on the Toronto Young Nationals (7:30 p.m. ET)

RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Qc – Kyle Gordon a mené l’offensive avec deux buts et une aide et les Bisons de Strathmore ont signé un premier gain sur la plus grande scène du hockey midget, lessivant les Albatros du Collège Notre-Dame 7-1 au dernier match mardi à la Coupe TELUS 2015.
Les Bisons ont fait subir au Collège Notre-Dame la pire défaite d’une équipe hôte depuis que le Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal a vaincu les North Stars de Sault Ste. Marie 9-2 au dernier match de la ronde préliminaire en 2013.
Gary Haden (un but, deux aides), Barrett Sheen (trois aides) et Gordon ont accumulé trois points et Trygve Many Guns, William Conley, Markus Lavallee et David Sheldon ont également fait vibrer les cordages.
Les hôtes du tournoi ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au pointage, alors que Samuel L’Italien a marqué en désavantage numérique après seulement 2 min 17 s de jeu. Cette rondelle aura toutefois été la seule à battre le gardien de but de Strathmore Kurtis Chapman, qui a terminé la rencontre avec 28 arrêts.
Many Guns a créé l’égalité avec 3 min 29 s à faire au premier tiers et par la suite, ce fut l’affaire des Bisons.
Haden a d’abord compté en début de deuxième période lors d’un jeu de puissance après seulement 93 secondes de jeu. Par la suite, Conley et Gordon ont tour à tour touché la cible en échappée en l’espace de 1 min 03 s pour donner les devants 4-1 aux champions de la région du Pacifique.
Lavallee a redirigé un tir d’Austin Cameron à partir du haut du cercle à 11 min 32 s, chassant ainsi le cerbère du Collège Notre-Dame Tristan Bérubé avant que Gordon obtienne son deuxième de la période en supériorité numérique seulement 64 secondes après, couronnant une deuxième période occupée des Bisons.
Sheldon a inscrit un autre but en troisième période lors d’un des cinq jeux de puissance de Strathmore au troisième tiers.
Les Bisons, qui ont dominé le Collège Notre-Dame 34-29 dans la colonne des tirs au but, ont terminé la soirée avec trois buts en 10 occasions en avantage numérique, alors que les Albatros n’ont rien généré en huit chances.
Strathmore sera de retour en action mercredi contre la seule équipe invaincue, les Pat Canadians de Regina (16 h HE), tandis que les Albatros tenteront de renouer avec la victoire face aux Young Nationals de Toronto (19 h 30 HE).
