  STRATHMORE SPREADS OUT SCORING, TOPS GLADIATORS AT TELUS CUP

  RIVIÈRE-DU-LOUP, Que. – Gary Haden, Kyle Gordon, Markus Lavallee and Zachary Vinnell each had a goal and an assist, and the Strathmore Bisons beat the Newbridge Academy Gladiators 6-2 to open play Thursday at the 2015 TELUS Cup.

  In all, six different players put pucks past Newbridge Academy goaltender Matthew Williams as Strathmore took a big step towards confirming its spot in the semifinals.

  The Bisons came charging out of the gate, capitalizing on a very early power play when Austin Cameron hammered a slap shot past Williams just 44 seconds in.

  Trygve Many Guns outmuscled a Gladiators defenceman in the slot before roofing a shot at 6:11, and Vinnell made it 3-0 just 22 seconds after that, giving the Pacific Region champions all the offence they would need.

  Morgan Barron gave the Gladiators a little bit of hope before the end of the period, bursting down the wing and converting on a breakaway opportunity at 13:55, cutting the Bisons’ lead to 3-1 after one.

  Just as it did in the first Strathmore struck quickly in the second, with Gordon’s third of the tournament coming just 92 seconds into the middle stanza, but Gladiators forward Noah McMullan fired an absolute howitzer that beat an unscreened Kurtis Chapman over the glove at 7:58 to make it 4-2 through 40 minutes.

  Strathmore added two more goals in the third period to pad its lead. First it was Lavallee scoring on the power play at 7:10, knocking in a rebound after Vinnell’s shot hit the cross bar and dropped into the crease.

  Haden would seal the win six-and-a-half minutes later, chasing Williams in favor of 15-year-old Cole McLaren, who saw his first action of the tournament and stopped all five shots he faced the rest of the way.

  The Bisons will look to officially clinch their semifinal spot when they wrap up the preliminary round on Friday morning against the Toronto Young Nationals (9:30 a.m. ET), while the Gladiators, who are out of playoff contention, will finish their schedule against the Regina Pat Canadians (1 p.m. ET).

  En tout, six joueurs différents ont placé des rondelles derrière le gardien de but de Newbridge Academy  Matthew Williams alors que Strathmore a franchi un pas important vers la confirmation de sa place en demi-finale.

  Les Bisons se sont rués hors de la barrière, et ont tiré profit d’un avantage numérique survenu tôt lorsqu’Austin Cameron a décoché un coup frappé derrière Williams après seulement 44 secondes de jeu.

  Trygve Many Guns a rudoyé un défenseur des Gladiators en zone privilégiée avant de percuter un tir à 6 min 11 s, puis Vinnell a fait monter le compte à 3-0 seulement 22 secondes plus tard, donnant aux champions de la région du Pacifique tout le jeu d’attaque qu’ils cherchaient.

  Morgan Barron a fait miroiter un peu d’espoir chez les Gladiators avant la fin de la période en surgissant de la zone des ailiers et en saisissant une occasion venue d’une échappée pour marquer à 13 min 55 s, réduisant ainsi l’avance des Bisons à 3-1.

  Comme elle l’avait fait en première période, Strathmore a surgi rapidement en deuxième avec le troisième but de Gordon cumulé dans ce tournoi marqué après tout juste 92 secondes de jeu au deuxième vingt, mais Noah McMullan, l’avant des Gladiators, a fait feu d’un boulet qui a déjoué un Kurtis Chapman bien dans sa mire au-dessus de son gant à 7 min 58 s faisant passer le compte à 4-2 après 40 minutes.

  Strathmore a ajouté deux autres buts en troisième confortant son avance. Ce fut d’abord Lavallee en avantage numérique à 7 min 10 s, faisant pénétrer un rebond après que le tir de Vinnell eût frappé la barre transversale et soit tombé dans l’enclave.

  Haden a scellé le compte six minutes et demie plus tard, faisant chasser Williams à la faveur du jeune Cole McLaren, 15 ans, qui en était à son baptême de tournoi, mais qui a réussi à stopper l’ensemble des cinq tirs fait à son endroit pour clore le match.

  Les Bisons chercheront à officialiser leur place en demi-finale lorsqu’ils mettront fin à la ronde préliminaire vendredi matin en affrontant les Young Nationals de Toronto à 9 h 30 HE, alors que les Gladiators, dont l’exclusion aux éliminatoires est maintenant connue, finaliseront leur participation devant les Pat Canadians de Regina à 13 h HE.
