  CANADA NEEDS SHOOTOUT TO EDGE SWITZERLAND AT WORLD JUNIORS

  HELSINKI, Finland – Brayden Point (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) and Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, B.C./Seattle, WHL) scored goals in the shootout, leading Canada’s National Junior Team to a 3-2 extra-time win over Switzerland on Tuesday at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship.

  It’s the 21st time in as many meetings Canada has beaten the Swiss at the world juniors, but the first not to end in regulation time.

  After Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) was stopped on Canada’s first shot, Point and Barzal both went to the backhand to beat Swiss netminder Joren van Pottelberghe, and Mackenzie Blackwood (Thunder Bay, Ont./Barrie, OHL) turned aside Pius Suter and Timo Meier to give the Canadians two points.

  Strome and Joe Hicketts (Kamloops, B.C./Victoria, WHL) scored in regulation for the Canadians, who clinched a quarter-final berth after erasing a 2-0 first-period deficit to win for the second day in a row.

  Lawson Crouse (Mt. Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL) assisted on both goals in the opening 60 minutes, while Blackwood finished with 23 saves in his first start in the Canadian goal.

  The Swiss benefitted from an early power play; a shot from Noah Rod deflected off the pants of Damien Riat in front and past Blackwood to put Switzerland up 1-0 with just 2:12 gone.

  The lead became two at 15:37 when Dario Meyer redirected a point shot from Marco Forrer, but Strome scored for the third straight game to pull the Canadians to within one with 23 seconds left in the first period, firing a wrist shot under the crossbar.

  Hicketts tied the game just past the 12-minute mark of the second, coming in off the blue-line and snapping a shot high on van Pottelberghe to make it 2-2 after two.

  The third period failed to produce a goal despite Canada holding a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal and overtime solved nothing, leading to Canada’s shootout heroics.

  The Canadians improved to 1-1-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L), good for second place in Group A, although they’ve played one game more than the United States. Canada closes out its preliminary round schedule Thursday when it takes on Sweden (1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT).

  HELSINKI, Finlande – Brayden Point (Calgary, Alb./Moose Jaw, WHL) et Mathew Barzal (Coquitlam, C.-B./Seattle, WHL) ont marqué en tirs de barrage pour mener l’équipe nationale junior du Canada à une victoire de 3-2 sur la Suisse, mardi, au Championnat mondial junior 2016 de l’IIHF.

  C’est la 21e fois en autant de rencontres que le Canada vainc les Suisses au Mondial junior, mais la première fois que la victoire ne survient pas en temps réglementaire. 

  Après que le premier tir de Dylan Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Erie, OHL) a été repoussé, Point et Barzal ont tous les deux tiré du revers pour déjouer le gardien de but suisse Joren van Pottelberghe, et Mackenzie Blackwood (Thunder Bay, Ont./Barrie, OHL) a bloqué les tirs de Pius Suter et Timo Meier pour permettre aux Canadiens de porter deux points à leur fiche. 

  Strome et Joe Hicketts (Kamloops, C.-B./Victoria, WHL) ont marqué en temps réglementaire pour les Canadiens qui accèdent aux quarts de finale après avoir comblé un déficit de 2-0 en première période pour gagner leur deuxième match en deux jours.

  Lawson Crouse (Mt. Brydges, Ont./Kingston, OHL) a obtenu une mention d’aide sur les deux buts marqués au cours des 60 premières minutes tandis que Blackwood a réussi 23 arrêts à son premier départ devant le filet canadien.

  Les Suisses ont profité d’une supériorité numérique en début de rencontre. Après seulement 2 min 12 s de jeu, Noah Rod a décoché un tir qui a dévié sur la culotte de Damien Riat avant de déjouer Blackwood et de donner l’avance 1-0 aux Suisses à 2 min 12 s.  

  La Suisse a doublé son avance à 15 min 37 s quand Dario Meyer a dévié un tir de la pointe de Marco Ferrer, mais Strome a marqué pour un troisième match de suite pour réduire l’écart à un but alors qu’il restait 23 secondes au premier tiers en décochant un tir du poignet sous la barre horizontale.

  Hicketts a nivelé le pointage peu après la 12e minute de jeu en deuxième période en s’avançant de la ligne bleue pour décocher un tir frappé court dans la partie supérieure du filet, déjouant van Pottelberghe et portant la marque à 2-2 après deux périodes.

  Aucun but n’a été marqué en troisième période malgré le fait que le Canada a dominé 16-8 au chapitre des tirs au but puis, la prolongation n’ayant rien décidé, l’issue du match a été déterminée en tirs de barrage où le Canada a eu la main heureuse.

  À la suite de cette victoire, les Canadiens, qui présentent une fiche de 1-1-0-1 (V-VP-DP-D), occupent le deuxième rang du groupe A bien qu’ils aient disputé un match de plus que les États-Unis. Le Canada jouera son dernier match de la ronde préliminaire jeudi contre la Suède (13 h HE/10 h HP).
