  SHIRLEY SHINES FOR STARS

  RED DEER, Alta. – It’s only the third day of the 2015 Esso Cup and Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask.) has already made a name for herself.

  A two-goal, two-assist performance Tuesday afternoon led her Saskatoon Stars to a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Thunder and moved her to the top of the scoring leaders list with seven points.

  Nara Elia (Saskatoon, Sask.), Julia Rongve (Saskatoon, Sask.) and Brittany Heuchert (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored the other Saskatoon goals. Elia and Rongve added an assist each.

  As much as the Thunder tried to change the plot – cutting a four-goal deficit to one by the end of the second period – it was Shirley, the Most Valuable Player of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League, setting the storyline.

  It took the forward only 32 seconds to make an impact, when she held the puck on a two-on-one, crossed into the low slot and beat Edmonton goalie Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alta.).

  The Stars doubled their lead before the first period was half over. Defenceman Hollie Coumont (Saskatoon, Sask.) stretched to keep the puck in at the blue line, then threw it to Shirley in the corner. Elia one-timed her pass from the edge of the face-off circle.

  Scrambling figuratively and literally the Thunder got called for covering the puck in the crease minutes later.

  On the ensuing penalty shot Shirley brought Kikuchi out wide and slid a forehand under the sprawled goalie.

  Rongve cleaned up Elia’s rebound early in the second and it appeared the rout was on.

  But three straight unassisted goals in 7:42 by Kennedy Becks (Edmonton, Alta.), Kimberley Huisman (Edmonton, Alta.) and Madison Laplante (Edmonton, Alta.) left the Thunder trailing by only one going into the second intermission.

  Edmonton stopped all that momentum itself less than five minutes into the third by taking back-to-back minors, giving Saskatoon 1:45 of five-on-three time.

  Twelve seconds into the two-man advantage, Heuchert finished a backdoor feed to give the Stars some breathing room. Heuchert’s goal was the first by a Stars player other than Shirley, Elia or Rongve. The trio had accounted for the team’s first nine goals in the tournament to that point.

  Kikuchi finished with 29 saves in the loss.

  Saskatoon next plays the Red Deer Chiefs on Wednesday night (7 p.m. MT), while Edmonton will look to rebound from its second loss in a row when it takes on winless Moncton Wednesday afternoon (12 p.m.).

  RED DEER, Alb. – C’est seulement le troisième jour de la Coupe Esso 2015, mais Sophie Shirley (Saskatoon, Sask.) s’est déjà forgé une belle réputation.

  Ses quatre points – deux buts et deux aides – mardi après-midi ont aidé les Stars de Saskatoon à vaincre le Thunder d’Edmonton 5-3 et l’ont portée au premier rang des pointeuses du tournoi avec sept points. 

  Nara Elia (Saskatoon, Sask.), Julia Rongve (Saskatoon, Sask.) et Brittany Heuchert (Saskatoon, Sask.) ont marqué les autres buts de Saskatoon et Elia et Rongve ont ajouté une mention d’aide chacune.

  Le Thunder a tout tenté pour inverser la vapeur – transformant un déficit de quatre buts en un écart d’un seul but après deux périodes –, mais Shirley, la Joueuse par excellence de la Ligue de hockey midget AAA féminin de la Saskatchewan, a été l’histoire du match.

  Il ne lui aura fallu que 32 secondes pour avoir un impact; conservant la rondelle lors d’un deux contre un, elle s’est avancée dans le bas de la zone privilégiée pour déjouer la gardienne de but d’Edmonton, Tracie Kikuchi (Edmonton, Alb.).

  Les Stars ont doublé leur avance avant la fin du premier tiers. La défenseure Hollie Coumont (Saskatoon, Sask.) s’est étirée à la ligne bleue pour garder la rondelle dans la zone puis l’a passée à Shirley dans le coin. Shirley a ensuite repéré Elia au cercle de mise en jeu et celle-ci a marqué d’un tir sur réception.

  Dans un effort désespéré, une joueuse du Thunder a couvert la rondelle dans l’enceinte quelques minutes plus tard ce qui a donné lieu à un tir de punition. 

  Shirley a été désignée pour l’exécuter. Elle a attiré Kikuchi sur le côté et a glissé un tir du coup droit sous la gardienne.

  Au début du deuxième tiers, Rongve a récupéré un rebond sur un tir d’Elia pour marquer. L’issue de la rencontre semblait scellée. 

  Mais trois buts sans réplique en l’espace de 7 min 42 s par Kennedy Becks (Edmonton, Alb.), Kimberley Huisman (Edmonton, Alb.) et Madison Laplante (Edmonton, Alb.) ont réduit l’écart à un seul but pour le Thunder au deuxième entracte.

  Edmonton a freiné son propre élan moins de cinq minutes après le début du dernier vingt en écopant de deux punitions mineures consécutives, permettant à Saskatoon de profiter d’un avantage de 5 contre 3 pendant 1 min 45 s.

  À la 12e seconde de l’avantage numérique, Heuchert a capté une passe venant de l’arrière pour offrir une certaine marge de manœuvre aux Stars. Le but de Herchert était le premier des Stars marqué par une joueuse autre que Shirley, Elia ou Rongve. Le trio avait jusqu’alors marqué les neuf buts de la formation au tournoi. 
  Kikuchi a réalisé 29 arrêts dans la défaite.

  Saskatoon affrontera les Chiefs de Red Deer mercredi soir (19 h HR) tandis qu’Edmonton tentera de se remettre après deux revers consécutifs lorsqu’elle jouera contre Moncton, qui n’a encore aucune victoire, mercredi après-midi (12 h).
