  COOPER’S TWO POINTS HELP VEES HAND CANADIANS FIRST LOSS

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Steen Cooper tied the game early in the second period and set up Connor Chartier for the game-winner five minutes into the third, helping the Penticton Vees edge the Carleton Place Canadians 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the 2015 RBC Cup.

  The win leaves both teams at 2-1, and temporarily moves Penticton into first place, depending on the result of the Portage Terriers-Soo Thunderbirds game on Tuesday night.

  Cam Amantea and Riley Alferd scored the other goals for the Vees, who trailed twice in the first 10 minutes.

  Andy Sturtz, Adam Lloyd and Stephen Baylis, all returnees from the Canadians’ 2014 RBC Cup team, did the scoring for Carleton Place, but it lost – and allowed a goal – for the first time in the tournament.

  It didn’t take long for the scoring to get started; Sturtz took advantage of a very early power play opportunity for the Canadians, firing a wrist shot through traffic and past Penticton goaltender Hunter Miska just 10 seconds into the man advantage, and just 30 seconds into the game.

  Amantea answered for the Vees just past the five-minute mark, batting a rebound past Guillaume Therien and ending the Carleton Place goaltender’s tournament-opening shutout streak at 125:09.

  But Lloyd restored the Canadians’ lead five minutes after that; onto the ice on a line change and straight into the offensive zone, the puck found his stick and he snapped a shot over Miska’s short-side shoulder.

  The Vees held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first period and continued to pressure in the second, doubling the Canadians in shots at 12-6 and scoring twice to take the lead for good.

  Cooper buried a rebound at 3:40 to pull Penticton even on the power play, and Alferd’s shot bounced off Carleton Place forward Maxime St. Pierre and past Therien at 7:49 to put the Vees ahead for the first time.

  Chartier was left alone in front of Therien and redirected a Cooper pass five-hole to make it 4-2 at 5:21 of the third period, but Baylis went end to end on a Canadians man advantage just 58 seconds later to get the East Region champions back within a goal.

  They would get no closer, however; a goal post in the dying minutes was Carleton Place’s best chance.

  Penticton will enjoy an off day Wednesday before closing out the preliminary round Thursday afternoon against the Soo Thunderbirds (2 p.m. CT), while the Canadians will finish their robin round against the Melfort Mustangs in Wednesday’s lone game (7 p.m. CT).

  PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – Steen Cooper a nivelé la marque en début de deuxième période et a mis la table pour Connor Chartier qui a marqué le but de la victoire à la cinquième minute du troisième tiers, aidant les Vees de Penticton à battre les Canadians de Carleton Place 4-3 mardi après-midi, à la Coupe RBC 2015.

  Avec ce résultat, les deux équipes ont maintenant un dossier de 2-1 et Penticton occupe temporairement la première position, dépendamment de l’issue du match opposant les Terriers de Portage aux Thunderbirds de Soo, mardi soir.

  Cam Amantea et Riley Alferd ont compté les autres filets des Vees, qui ont tiré de l’arrière deux fois au cours des 10 premières minutes.

  Andy Sturtz, Adam Lloyd et Stephen Baylis, tous des vétérans de la Coupe RBC 2014, ont fait vibrer les cordages pour Carleton Place, qui a perdu et accordé un premier but dans le tournoi.

  Sturtz n’a pas mis de temps pour inscrire les Canadians au tableau, profitant d’un jeu de puissance très tôt dans la rencontre pour décocher un tir des poignets dans la circulation qui a battu le cerbère de Penticton Hunter Miska seulement 10 secondes après le début de l’avantage numérique et 30 secondes après le début du match.

  Amantea a répliqué pour les Vees à la cinquième minute, poussant un retour derrière Guillaume Therien et mettant fin à la séquence de temps sans accorder de but du portier à 125 min 09 s.

  Cependant, Lloyd a redonné l’avance aux Canadians cinq minutes plus tard. Il a sauté sur la glace après un changement de ligne et a foncé directement en zone offensive avant de recevoir la rondelle et de tirer par-dessus l’épaule de Miska, du côté rapproché.

  Les Vees ont maintenu un avantage de 11-6 dans la colonne des tirs au but en première période et ont continué de mettre de la pression au deuxième vingt, doublant le nombre de tirs (12-6) des Canadians et marquant deux fois pour ne plus jamais regarder derrière ensuite.

  Cooper s’est emparé d’un rebond en supériorité numérique pour faire mouche à 3 min 40 s, remettant ainsi les pendules à l’heure, puis le tir d’Alferd a heurté l’avant de Carleton Place Maxime St. Pierre et trompé la vigilance de Therien à 7 min 49 s pour donner une première avance aux Vees.

  Chartier a été laissé seul devant Therien et a redirigé une passe de Cooper entre les jambières du gardien de but pour porter la marque à 4-2 à 5 min 21 s du troisième tiers, mais Baylis a traversé la glace lors d’un jeu de puissance des Canadians seulement 58 secondes plus tard pour approcher les champions de la région de l’Est à un seul but de leur adversaire.

  Néanmoins, c’est le plus près qu’ils auront été. Un tir qui a touché le poteau dans les dernières minutes aura été la meilleure chance de Carleton Place d’égaliser.

  Penticton sera au repos mercredi avant de conclure sa ronde préliminaire jeudi après-midi face aux Thunderbirds de Soo (14 h HC), alors que les Canadians complèteront cette ronde face aux Mustangs de Melfort dans le seul duel à l’horaire mercredi (19 h HC).
