  CANADA BEATS RUSSIA TO CLAIM GOLD MEDAL AT WORLDS

  PRAGUE, Czech Republic – In a word: dominating.

  Canada’s National Men’s Team put an exclamation point on what had been an overpowering 17 days of hockey by defeating Russia 6-1 Sunday to capture the gold medal at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

  Canada was perfect in Prague, going 10-0 and outscoring its opposition 66-15. It’s the team’s first world title since 2007, and marked the 12th time Canada ran the table at the world championship and the 16th team it has gone undefeated.

  Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, Alta./Buffalo, NHL), Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.S./Pittsburgh, NHL) and Claude Giroux (Hearst, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) led the offence with a goal and an assist each. Cody Eakin (Winnipeg, Man./Dallas, NHL), Tyler Seguin (Brampton, Ont./Dallas, NHL) and Nathan MacKinnon (Cole Harbour, N.S./Colorado, NHL) also scored for Canada.

  Mike Smith (Kingston, Ont./Arizona, NHL) faced only 12 shots in picking up the win.

  Crosby, who recorded a point in every game, became the 26th member – and ninth Canadian – to join the IIHF Triple Gold Club, having already won the Stanley Cup (2009) and Olympic gold (2010 and 2014). For the first time Canada now simultaneously holds the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, IIHF World Junior Championship and Olympic titles.

  Despite a furious pace that showcased the skill of both teams to start the game, it took 18 minutes and a fortunate bounce to open the scoring. Ennis spun and sent a shot toward the net that deflected off Eakin’s foot and in.

  It was all speed and skill that led to Ennis doubling the lead early in the second, when he beat Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovski on a wraparound.

  Two goals 43 seconds apart in the second broke the game open before it was halfway over. First, Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./Edmonton, NHL) sent a quick pass out front, where Crosby roofed the one-timer from the bottom of the face-off circle. Then, Giroux sent a pass between two defenders to Seguin, who notched his tournament-leading ninth goal.

  Canada put up another quick pair midway through the third: Giroux one-timed Crosby’s cross-crease pass on the power play; 52 seconds later MacKinnon beat Bobrovski off the rush with a wrist shot.

  Yevgeni Malkin deflected a shot under Smith with seven minutes to play to break up the shutout.

  Brent Burns (Barrie, Ont./San Jose, NHL) and Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Dallas, NHL) were named directorate award winners as Top Defenceman and Top Forward, respectively, and the two were joined by Taylor Hall (Kingston, Ont./Edmonton, NHL) on the media all-star team.

  L’équipe nationale masculine du Canada a mis fin à 17 jours de domination au hockey de façon sans équivoque en écrasant la Russie 6-1 dimanche pour s’emparer de la médaille d’or au Championnat mondial de hockey sur glace 2015 de l’IIHF.

  Le Canada a présenté une fiche parfaite à Prague, accumulant 10 victoires contre aucune défaite et dominant ses adversaires 66-15. Il s’agit du premier titre mondial de la formation depuis 2007, de la 12e fois que le Canada gagne tous ses matchs au championnat mondial et de la 16e fois qu’il est invaincu.   

  Tyler Ennis (Edmonton, Alb./Buffalo, LNH), Sidney Crosby (Cole Harbour, N.-É./Pittsburgh, LNH) et Claude Giroux (Hearst, Ont./Philadelphie, LNH) ont mené l’offensive avec un but et une mention d’aide chacun.   Malgré une première période à vive allure mettant en évidence les habiletés des deux formations pour entreprendre le match, il aura fallu attendre 18 minutes et un rebond chanceux pour assister à un but. Ennis a tourné sur lui-même, a décoché un tir vers le filet et la rondelle a bondi sur le patin d’Eakin pour se retrouver dans le but.

  Ensuite, vitesse et habileté ont permis à Eakin de doubler l’avance canadienne tôt au deuxième tiers alors qu’il a déjoué le gardien de but russe Sergei Bobrovski au moyen d’un enroulé.

  Deux buts à 43 secondes d’intervalle au deuxième tiers ont creusé l’écart avant le milieu du match. D’abord, Jordan Eberle (Regina, Sask./Edmonton, LNH) a effectué une passe que Crosby a saisie pour décocher un tir sur réception dans la partie supérieure alors qu’il se trouvait au bas du cercle de mise au jeu. Puis, Giroux a effectué une passe entre deux joueurs à la défensive en direction de Seguin qui a marqué son neuvième du tournoi pour se hisser au premier rang des buteurs du championnat.

  Le Canada a ensuite marqué deux autres buts rapprochés au milieu de la troisième période; Giroux a fait mouche sur un tir sur réception d’une passe de Crosby en travers de l’enceinte en avantage numérique et 52 secondes plus tard, MacKinnon a déjoué Bobrovski d’un tir du poignet.

  Yevgeni Malkin a dévié un tir sous Smith alors qu’il restait sept minutes à jouer pour ruiner le jeu blanc.

  Brent Burns (Barrie, Ont./San Jose, LNH) et Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Dallas, LNH) ont été nommés Meilleur défenseur et Meilleur avant, respectivement, par la direction du tournoi et ils ont vu Taylor Hall (Kingston, Ont./Edmonton, LNH) se joindre à eux au sein de l’équipe des étoiles des médias.
