  KO GETS OT WINNER, ALBERTA GET FIRST WIN

  HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – The teams and the fans at the Canada Summit Centre waited nearly 61 minutes for a goal Friday afternoon, and when it finally came it was a beauty.

  Tianna Ko (Calgary, Alta./Calgary, AMMFHL) batted a rebound out of the air from just outside the crease only 55 seconds into overtime to give Alberta its first win of the 2015 National Women’s Under-18 Championship, a 1-0 decision over Atlantic.

  Seconds earlier Ko had created a turnover in the neutral zone, then drove to the net. Mairead Bast’s (Red Deer, Alta./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) shot from the side boards was stopped by Atlantic goalie Shelby Ryan (Dartmouth, N.S./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS). The rebound barely had time to hang in the air before Ko swung and hit the puck into the net.

  Zoe De Beauville (Calgary, Alta./Calgary, AMMFHL) made 21 saves for the shutout.

  Ryan stopped 21 shots for Atlantic.

  Both teams had plenty to play for in the day’s second match-up. Atlantic could clinch its first semifinal berth since 2011 with a win in regulation. Alberta could keep its hopes alive if it won in 60 minutes, as well.

  The extra time needed means Alberta is now eliminated from medal round contention, while Atlantic waits to see what British Columbia does later in the day against Ontario Blue.

  Offence hadn’t come easy to either team in Huntsville: Atlantic had three goals in two games coming in; Alberta, only one.

  Both had their chances Friday.

  In the first period, Atlantic’s Jane Stevens (Upper Tantallon, N.S./Rothersay Netherwood School, CAHS) was turned away on a two-on-one. During a four-minute power play later on, the team moved the puck effectively around the Alberta zone – twice stopping clearing attempts – but De Beauville and her defenders keep the scoresheet clean.

  In the second period, Brette Pettet (Kentville, N.S./Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, CAHS) was turned aside twice from the top of the crease, only a minute after Ryan had denied Alberta’s Amanda McLeod (Okotoks, Alta./Edge School, CSSHL) from spinning and scoring.

  Alberta will play Saskatchewan in the seventh place game on Saturday (10:30 a.m. ET/7:30 a.m. PT). Atlantic will learn its fate later in the day: a win in regulation or overtime by British Columbia gives the West Coast team the last seat at the medal round table. A loss of any kind gives it to Atlantic.

  KO MARQUE EN PROLONGATION ET L’ALBERTA GAGNE UN PREMIER MATCH

  HUNTSVILLE, Ont. – Les équipes et les partisans réunis au Canada Summit Centre ont attendu presque 61 minutes pour un but vendredi après-midi et l’attente en a valu la peine, car ce fut un bijou.

  Tianna Ko (Calgary, Alb./Calgary, AMMFHL) a frappé un rebond dans les airs alors qu’elle se trouvait devant l’enceinte après seulement 55 secondes de jeu en prolongation pour permettre à l’Alberta de remporter son premier match du Championnat national féminin des moins de 18 ans 2015, une victoire de 1-0 sur l’Atlantique.

  Quelques seconds plus tôt, Ko avait créé un revirement en zone neutre avant de foncer au filet. Le tir de
  Mairead Bast (Red Deer, Alb./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL) de la bande sur le côté a été bloqué par Shelby Ryan (Dartmouth, N.-É./Rothesay Netherwood School, CAHS), mais le rebond a à peine eu le temps de voler dans les airs avant que Ko frappe la rondelle et que celle-ci pénètre dans le but.  

  Zoe De Beauville (Calgary, Alb./Calgary, AMMFHL) a effectué 21 arrêts pour réussir le jeu blanc.

  Ryan a elle aussi bloqué 21 tirs devant le filet de l’Atlantique.  

  L’enjeu était grand pour les deux formations dans le deuxième match de la journée. L’Atlantique pouvait accéder au carré d’as pour la première fois depuis 2011 si elle gagnait en temps réglementaire et l’Alberta pouvait garder espoir d’être des demi-finales si elle l’emportait en 60 minutes elle aussi.

  La prolongation signifie que l’Alberta est maintenant éliminée de la ronde des médailles et que l’Atlantique devra attendre le résultat du match de ce soir entre la Colombie-Britannique et Ontario Bleu. 

  L’offensive des deux équipes a fait défaut cette semaine à Huntsville; l’Atlantique avait marqué trois buts en deux matchs avant celui-ci et l’Alberta, un seul.

  Les deux ont eu des occasions de marquer vendredi.

  Au premier tiers, Jane Stevens (Upper Tantallon, N.É./Rothersay Netherwood School, CAHS) de l’Atlantique a vu son occasion de marquer repoussée lors d’un deux contre un. Plus tard, pendant une supériorité numérique de quatre minutes, l’équipe a bien déplacé la rondelle en zone offensive – empêchant deux tentatives de dégagement –, mais De Beauville et ses défenseures veillaient au grain.

  En deuxième période, Brette Pettet (Kentville, N.-É./Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, CAHS) a vu deux de ses tirs du haut de la zone privilégiée bloqués, une minute seulement après que Ryan a empêché Amanda McLeod (Okotoks, Alb./Edge School, CSSHL) de l’Alberta de tourner sur elle-même et de marquer.  

  L’Alberta affrontera la Saskatchewan dans le match pour la septième place, samedi (10 h 30 HE/7 h 30 HP). L’Atlantique connaîtra son sort plus tard aujourd’hui : une victoire de la Colombie-Britannique en temps réglementaire ou en prolongation permettra à l’équipe de la côte ouest d’accéder au carré d’as. Toute défaite, et l’Atlantique se qualifiera.
