GREEN SCORES FOUR IN SECOND PERIOD, BEATS GOLD AT U17 CAMP

CALGARY, Alta. – Four goals in the second period was the difference as Green beat Gold 4-2 in the first game for both Saturday night at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.
Green was down 1-0 after the first period and responded with four unanswered goals in the second, including three in a span of 2:53, to take the lead for good.
The difference between the first and second period was pretty simple, according to Adam Dawe (Gander, N.L./Notre Dame Hounds, SMAAAHL), who had a goal and an assist. “We came back to the dressing room after the first and the coach went over some plays and we paid attention to detail and put up four goals.”
Gold opened the scoring on a late-period goal from Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alta./St. Albert, AMHL), whose point shot eluded Green goaltender Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Sun County, MHAO) with 70 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Mitchell’s goal helped out netminder Matthew Welsh (Halifax, N.S./Halifax, NSMMHL), who stopped 18 shots in the first period.
Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) got Green going with its first goal at 4:14 of the second, followed by a power play marker from Robbie Burt (Hillsburgh, Ont./Mississauga Rebels, GTHL) at the 11-minute mark, finishing a nice feed from Dawe for a 2-1 advantage.
“We did our breakout and the puck went up to our winger and then to me, I went around (the net) and seen Robbie out front and I hit him with a one-touch goal,” Dawe said of the go-ahead goal.
Maxime Comtois (Ste-Martine, Que./Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ) made it 3-1 just 1:08 later, and 45 seconds after that Dawe was rewarded for driving the net, knocking in a rebound for a three-goal lead.
Gold picked up its pace in the third period and tried to start a comeback when Owen Tippett (Peterborough, Ont./Toronto Red Wings, GTHL) scored at 12:06 of the final frame, but that would be all for scoring.
DiPietro and Kyle Jessiman (Châteauguay, Que./Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ) stopped nine shots apiece to help Green to the win, while Welsh stopped 22 of 23 and Dereck Baribeau (L’Ancienne-Lorette, Que./Séminaire Saint-François, LHMAAAQ) turned away seven of 10 in the Gold goal.

CALGARY, Alb. – Quatre buts en deuxième période ont fait la différence et les Verts ont battu les Or 4-2 dans le premier match des deux équipes samedi soir au camp national de développement des moins de 17 ans du Canada.
Les Verts tiraient de l’arrière 1-0 après une période et ont répondu avec quatre buts sans réplique au deuxième tiers, dont trois en l’espace de 2 min 53 s pour ne jamais regarder derrière par la suite.
La différence entre le premier et deuxième tiers a été assez simple selon Adam Dawe (Gander, T.-N. L./Hounds de Notre Dame, SMAAAHL), qui a obtenu un but et une aide. « Au premier entracte, l’entraîneur est revenu sur certains jeux et nous avons porté attention à certains détails et inscrit quatre buts. »
Les Or ont ouvert la marque avec un but tardif d’Ian Mitchell (Calahoo, Alb./St. Albert, AMHL) dont le tir de la pointe a battu le gardien de but des Verts Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Sun County, MHAO) avec 70 secondes à faire au premier tiers.
Le but de Mitchell a aidé le cerbère Matthew Welsh (Halifax, N.-É./Halifax, NSMMHL), qui a bloqué 18 tirs au premier vingt.
Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver, C.-B./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) a ouvert la voie pour les Verts en marquant à 4 min 14 s du deuxième vingt, suivi d’un but en avantage numérique de Robbie Burt (Hillsburgh, Ont./Rebels de Mississauga, GTHL) à la 11e minute, complétant une belle passe de Dawe pour donner l’avance aux siens 2-1.
« Nous avons amorcé notre sortie de zone et la rondelle s’est retrouvée sur la lame de notre ailier et ensuite à moi. J’ai contourné le filet et j’ai aperçu Robbie en avant qui a marqué sur le coup », disait Dawe de ce but.
Maxime Comtois (Ste-Martine, Qc/Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ) a porté le compte à 3-1 seulement 1 min 08 s plus tard et 45 secondes plus tard, Dawe a été récompensé d’avoir foncé au filet, logeant le disque dans le filet pour augmenter l’avance des siens à trois.
Les Or ont pris plus de rythme en troisième période et tenté d’amorcer une remontée lorsqu’Owen Tippett (Peterborough, Ont./Red Wings de Toronto, GTHL) a marqué à 12 min 06 du troisième tiers, mais n’ont pu en faire plus.
DiPietro et Kyle Jessiman (Châteauguay, Qc/Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ) ont repoussé neuf rondelles chacun pour aider les Verts à l’emporter, alors que Welsh a repoussé 22 tirs sur 23 et Dereck Baribeau (L’Ancienne-Lorette, Qc/Séminaire Saint-François, LHMAAAQ) a bloqué sept tirs sur dix devant le filet des Or.
