  BLUE OUTLASTS RED IN BACK-AND-FORTH GAME AT U17 CAMP

  CALGARY, Alta. – Blue and Red appeared headed for overtime in an evenly-matched game before David Levin (North York, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) tallied two unanswered goals with less than six minutes left to lead Blue to a 3-2 win Monday at Canada’s national under-17 development camp.

  Red opened the scoring on just its fourth shot of the game, with Jake Kustra (Yorkton, Sask./Notre Dame Argos, SMAAAHL) collecting a bounce off the end boards and slotting in a goal on the near side.

  Ben Jones (Waterloo, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) responded quickly for Blue with a snapshot off an assist from Fedor Gordeev (Toronto, Ont./Toronto Red Wings, GTHL) to tie the game 1-1 less than halfway into the first period.  

  Blue goaltender Brendan Bonello (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Titans, GTHL) was able to withstand a flurry of shots in the first period, with Red getting 11 shots on goal compared to Blue’s six.

  Blue came out strong in the second period, with Kyle Olson (Calgary, Alta./Calgary Buffaloes, AMHL) beating Jacob Stewart (Quispamsis, N.B./Saint John, NBPEIMMHL) with a quick shot from the slot thanks to great passing from Jones and Matthew Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) and Jones.

  Blue’s lead didn’t last long, however, with Red’s MacKenzie Entwistle (Georgetown, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) capitalizing on a power play just 2:53 later. Entwistle was able to direct his shot through traffic to score on Bonello.

  Less than a minute later, Blue got another goal, this time on a power play of its own. Antoine Crête-Belzile (Quebec City, Que./Séminaire Saint-François, LHMAAAQ) scored from the point to put his team ahead 3-2, but late in the period Entwistle showed off some slick moves, going to the backhand on a shorthanded breakaway to end the second frame in a 3-3 tie.

  Blue once again opened the scoring in the third, with Jones crashing the net to get his third point of the game just 4:12 in. Red once again tied the game, though, with Antoine Morand (Mercier, Que./Chateauguay, LHMAAAQ) burying a loose puck in front of the net at 11:07.

  Unfortunately, that would be the last offensive punch for Red. Levin scored twice in the final 5:15 – the first from a tough angle close to the net, and the second into an empty net.

  Stewart went the distance in the Red goal, stopping 15 of 20 shots, while Blue’s netminding duties were split between Bonello and Dawson Weatherill (Red Deer, Alta./Notre Dame Argos, SMAAAHL). Bonello stopped 12 of 14, while Weatherill turned away 15 of 17.

  CALGARY, Alb. – Le match entre les Bleus et les Rouges semblait se diriger vers la prolongation, mais David Levin (North York, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) a marqué deux buts sans réplique alors qu’il restait moins de six minutes à jouer pour mener les Bleus à une victoire de 3-2, lundi, au camp national de développement des moins de 17 ans.  

  Les Rouges ont ouvert la marque à seulement leur quatrième tir du match lorsque Jake Kustra (Yorkton, Sask./Argos de Notre Dame, SMAAAHL) s’est emparé d’un rebond contre la bande à l’extrémité pour marquer du côté rapproché.

  Ben Jones (Waterloo, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL) a répliqué rapidement pour les Bleus en marquant au moyen d’un tir frappé court après avoir capté une passe de Fedor Gordeev (Toronto, Ont./Red Wings de Toronto, GTHL) pour niveler le pointage 1-1 un peu avant le milieu du premier tiers.

  Le gardien de but des Bleus, Brendan Bonello (Mississauga, Ont./Titans de Toronto, GTHL) a été en mesure de résister à un barrage de tirs au premier vingt, les Rouges obtenant 11 tirs au but contre 6 pour les Bleus.

  Les Bleus ont entrepris la deuxième période avec fougue. Kyle Olson (Calgary, Alb./Buffaloes de Calgary, AMHL) a déjoué Jacob Stewart (Quispamsis, N.-B./Saint John, NBPEIMMHL) d’un tir rapide de la zone privilégiée à la suite de superbes passes de Jones et Matthew Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL).

  Mais l’avance des Bleus n’a pas duré longtemps puisque MacKenzie Entwistle (Georgetown, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL) des Rouges a marqué lors d’une supériorité numérique seulement 2 min 53 s plus tard. Entwistle a réussi à faufiler la rondelle en pleine circulation pour déjouer Bonello.

  Moins d’une minute plus tard, les Bleus ont à nouveau fait vibrer les mailles du filet alors qu’ils jouissaient d’un avantage numérique à leur tour. Antoine Crête-Belzile (Québec, Qc/Séminaire Saint-François, LHMAAAQ) a marqué d’un tir de la pointe pour donner une avance de 3-2 aux siens, mais en fin de période, Entwistle a exécuté de belles feintes alors qu’il s’avançait en échappée pour décocher un tir du revers et niveler la marque 3-3 à la fin de la deuxième période.

  Les Bleus ont à nouveau inscrit le premier but de la période en troisième lorsque Jones a foncé au filet pour obtenir son troisième point de la rencontre après seulement 4 min 12 s de jeu. Mais les Rouges ont recréé l’égalité lorsqu’Antoine Morand (Mercier, Qc/Châteauguay, LHMAAAQ) s’est emparé d’une rondelle libre devant le filet à 11 min 7 s.

  Ce fut la dernière poussée offensive des Rouges. Levin a ensuite marqué deux buts au cours des cinq dernières minutes et 15 secondes – le premier d’un angle aigu à proximité du filet et le second dans un filet désert.  

  Stewart a gardé le filet des Rouges pendant tout le match, repoussant 15 des 20 tirs dirigés vers lui tandis que
  Bonello et Dawson Weatherill (Red Deer, Alb./ Argos de Notre Dame, SMAAAHL) se sont partagé la tâche devant le filet des Bleus, Bonello bloquant 12 tirs sur 14 et Weatherill, 15 sur 17.
