  BOWERS KNOCKS IN LATE WINNER FOR BLUE AT U17 CAMP

  CALGARY, Alta. – Shane Bowers (Herring Cove, N.S./Halifax, NSMMHL) knocked in the game-winner on the power play with less than 30 seconds left in the game to get a 5-4 win for Blue over Black in the third-place game at Canada’s national under-17 development camp on Tuesday afternoon.

  “The puck came around the wall, I picked it up, walked to the middle of the ice, threw it on net and it was lucky enough to go five-hole on the goalie,” said Bowers. “Sometimes good things happen.”

  Simon Lefebvre (Laval, Que./Laval-Montréal, LHMAAAQ) opened the scoring for Black when he hammered home a no look, behind the back pass from Liam Hawel (Arnprior, Ont./Ottawa Valley, OMEHL) at 7:24.

  Just over a minute later, Blue answered back to tie the game with a snipe  in close by Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Lac St-Louis, LHMAAAQ) off a pass from Bowers.

  Early in the second, Brady Gilmour (Grafton, Ont./Quinte, OMHA) tipped in a shot by Jantzen Leslie (Lloydminster, Alta./Lloydminster, AMHL) making it 2-1 for Black. Durandeau tied it up for Blue with a beautiful unassisted, shorthanded goal just past the 10-minute mark of the middle frame.

  Late in the second, Black hammered away at a loose puck in front of the Blue crease and Stelio Mattheos (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Wild, MMAAAHL) somehow found the back of the net with a backhand.

  Just over a minute into the third, Mattheos netted his second of the game off a pass from James Malm (Langley, B.C./Valley West, BCMML) to give Black a two-goal lead.

  The lead was short-lived as Brett Neumann (Toronto, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) came in hard with a backhand goal over the shoulder of Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL). Moments later, Matthew Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Marlboros, GTHL) netted a wrist shot in close to tie the game.

  Black took a late penalty with less than two minutes left on the clock, giving Bowers the chance he needed to score the game-winning goal.

  “It felt good (to score the game-winning goal) but it was better to get the win. The last game there wasn’t the game we wanted to play in, but it was good to finish with a win,” Bowers said.  “The guys on the team, we really gelled over the week; it was like we were a real team out there.”

  Alex D’Orio (Sherbrooke, Que./Magog, LHMAAAQ) and McGrath faced 26 shots combined for Black, while Red netminders Brendan Bonello (Mississauga, Ont./Toronto Titans, GTHL) and Dawson Weatherill (Red Deer, Alta./Notre Dame Argos, SMAAAHL) stopped 23 of the 27 shots they faced.

  BOWERS MARQUE LE BUT GAGNANT EN FIN DE MATCH ET LES BLEUS L’EMPORTENT AU CAMP DES M17

  CALGARY, Alb. – Shane Bowers (Herring Cove, N.-É./Halifax, NSMMHL) a marqué le but gagnant à moins de 30 secondes de la fin du match, permettant aux Bleus de battre les Noirs 5-4 lors du match pour la troisième place au camp national de développement des moins de 17 ans, mardi après-midi.

  « La rondelle a longé la bande, je l’ai récupérée, je me suis faufilé jusqu’au centre de la glace, j’ai tiré au but et j’ai eu la chance de la voir se faufiler entre les jambières du gardien », dit Bowers. « Parfois, il arrive de bonnes choses. »

  Simon Lefebvre (Laval, Qc/Laval-Montréal, LHMAAAQ) a inscrit le premier but des Noirs lorsqu’il a décoché un puissant tir à l’aveuglette après avoir capté une passe de Liam Hawel (Arnprior, Ont./Ottawa Valley, OMEHL) dans son dos à 7 min 24 s.

  Seulement une minute plus tard, les Bleus ont répliqué pour niveler la marque lorsqu’Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Qc/Lac St-Louis, LHMAAAQ) a décoché un boulet à bout portant après avoir capté une passe de Bowers.

  Au début de la deuxième période, Brady Gilmour (Grafton, Ont./Quinte, OMHA) a dévié un tir de Jantzen Leslie (Lloydminster, Alb./Lloydminster, AMHL) pour porter la marque à 2-1 pour les Noirs. Durandeau a ensuite créé l’égalité pour les Bleus en marquant un superbe but sans aide en désavantage numérique peu après la 10e minute de la période médiane.

  Vers la fin du deuxième tiers, les Noirs se sont acharnés sur une rondelle libre devant le filet des Bleus et
  Stelio Mattheos (Winnipeg, Man./Wild de Winnipeg, MMAAAHL) a réussi à trouver le fond du filet avec un tir du revers.  

  Peu après la première minute de jeu au troisième vingt, Mattheos a compté son deuxième but du match avec l’aide de James Malm (Langley, C.-B./Valley West, BCMML) pour donner une avance de deux buts aux Noirs.

  Mais l’avance fut de courte durée. Brett Neumann (Toronto, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) a foncé au filet à vive allure et a marqué d’un tir du revers par-dessus l’épaule de Jacob McGrath (Mississauga, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL). Quelques instants plus tard, Matthew Strome (Mississauga, Ont./Marlboros de Toronto, GTHL) a fait mouche au moyen d’un tir du poignet à bout portant pour restaurer l’égalité.

  Les Noirs ont écopé d’une punition alors qu’il restait moins de deux minutes au chronomètre et Bowers a saisi l’occasion pour marquer le but gagnant.

  « Ce fut agréable (de marquer le but gagnant), mais ce fut encore mieux de gagner. Ce n’est pas le dernier match auquel nous voulions participer, mais ce fut bien de terminer avec une victoire », a dit Bowers. « Les gars de l’équipe ont vraiment développé une chimie au cours de la semaine; c’était comme si nous formions une vraie équipe sur la glace. »

  Ensemble, Alex D’Orio (Sherbrooke, Qc/Magog, LHMAAAQ) et McGrath ont affronté 26 tirs devant le filet des Noirs tandis que les gardiens de but des Rouges, Brendan Bonello (Mississauga, Ont./Titans de Toronto, GTHL) et Dawson Weatherill (Red Deer, Alb./ Argos de Notre Dame, SMAAAHL), ont repoussé 23 des 27 tirs dans leur direction.
