  WHITE TOPS GREEN IN OT THRILLER TO WIN U17 CAMP TITLE

  CALGARY, Alta. – White and Green put on quite a show in Tuesday’s camp championship game, combining for five goals in the third period before Noel Hoefenmayer (Toronto, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) was the overtime hero, giving White a 6-5 win and the camp title for the second year in a row.

  Overtime didn’t last long – Hoefenmayer scored 1:15 into the extra period to give his team the victory.

  “I saw [Nick] Suzuki walking up the wall and drove to the net hard, and he fed me a great pass,” Hoefenmayer said of the OT winner It was an easy tap-in after that great set-up.”

  Nate Schnarr (Waterloo, Ont./Waterloo, MHAO) opened the scoring for Green about eight minutes into the first period, coming in on the rush off a pass from defenseman Jonathan Smart (Kelowna, B.C/Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) and putting a powerful shot past White goaltender Ian Scott (Calgary, Alta./Calgary Northstars, AMHL).

  After Schnarr’s goal, the two teams traded chances, but ended the period 1-0.

  Both teams continued to go end-to-end in the second, and Green was able to kill several penalties before Matthew Struthers (Milton, Ont./Halton, OMHA) got White on the board with a shot through traffic in front of the net at 12:13.

  Green quickly responded, with Robbie Burt (Hillsburgh, Ont./Mississauga Rebels, GTHL) scoring off of a wrist shot near the right face-off circle at 13:49 before Schnarr netted his second goal of the game shortly thereafter to give his team a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

  The third period was a frantic one, with Struthers getting another goal off a tap-in past Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Sun County, MHAO). Green quickly took the lead again, with Isaac Ratcliffe (London, Ont./London, OMHA) making it 4-2 on the power play 58 seconds later.

  White rallied back in a big way, with Austen Keating (Guelph, Ont./Guelph, OMHA) and James Hamblin (Edmonton, Alta./Edmonton SSAC, AMHL) scoring 30 seconds apart to tie the game 4-4.

  Walter Flower (Lunenburg, N.S./South Shore, NSMMHL) scored what appeared to be the game-winner for White on a rocket of a shot from the point with just over six minutes remaining, but Green didn’t quit.

  Defenseman Brady Lyle (North Bay, Ont./Shattuck-St.Mary’s, USHS) collected a pass from Jordan Bellerive (North Vancouver, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, CSSHL) and scored through traffic to make it 5-5 with one minute to play.

  Hoefenmayer said the team wasn’t discouraged after going into the second intermission facing a 3-1 deficit: “It happens all the time. We just kept it simple, worked hard, battled every shift. We took it one at a time and it worked out well.”

  CALGARY, Alb. – Les Blancs et les Verts ont donné tout un spectacle lors du match de championnat du camp mardi, marquant à eux deux cinq buts en troisième période avant que Noel Hoefenmayer (Toronto, Ont./Don Mills, GTHL) devienne le héros du match en prolongation, procurant aux Blancs une victoire de 6-5 et le titre du camp pour une deuxième année consécutive.

  La prolongation a été de courte durée – Hoefenmayer a compté après seulement 1 min 15 s de jeu – donnant la victoire à sa formation.

  « J’ai aperçu [Nick] Suzuki remontant le long de la bande, je me suis rapidement dirigé vers le filet, puis il m’a fait une belle passe », a commenté Hoefenmayer au sujet de son but gagnant en prolongation. « Ce fut un travail facile après cette merveilleuse mise en scène. »
