  LATE GOAL FROM MALTAIS GIVES CANADA SERIES OPENING WIN

  LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) scored with 3:08 remaining in the third period to give Canada’s National Women’s Under-18

  Team a 3-2 victory over the United States in the opener of a three-game series in Lake Placid, N.Y.

  After a fast-paced third period that saw several end-to-end rushes by both sides, Maltais, only 15 and the youngest member of Team Canada, sent a wrist shot from the low slot top corner. It was the first time Canada led the entire game.

  Maltais’ heroics were preceded in the period by a pair of acrobatic saves by goalie Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Toronto, PWHL), who sprawled out to foil the Americans on back-to-back two-on-ones.

  Amy Potomak (Aldergrove, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, BCMAAA) in the first and Victoria Howran (Bancroft, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) in the second also scored for Canada.

  Potomak added an assist, as did Olivia Knowles (Campbell River, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, JWHL), Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ont./Mississauga, PWHL) and Codie Cross (Airdrie, Alta./Warner School, JWHL).

  Edith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Laval, QCME) started in net for Canada, allowing both American goals. Neatby played a perfect second half of the game.

  With the win Canada improved its all-time record in the summer series with the United States to 15-10.

  Early on it looked like the game would be a match-up of special teams. Only 41 seconds of the opening 9:40 saw both teams playing at even strength.

  The scoring came once the teams were at five-on-five. Rebecca Gilmore took advantage of a bad line change by Canada to streak down the left wing unattended and beat D’Astous-Moreau five-hole.

  Canada equalized three minutes later when Potomak’s wrist shot went off the post and in. That got the pro-Canadian crowd – a mix of family members and tourists – back in the game.

  The United States retook the lead with three to play in the opening period. Thanks to a pass from Val Turgeon that had D’Astous-Moreau moving to her left, Natalie Snodgrass had an open tap in blocker side.

  Canada evened things up again early in the second, when the puck deflected to an unmarked Howran, who wristed the puck in from the slot.

  Beth Larcom took the loss for the United States.

  The teams are back on the ice Friday night (6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT) for Game 2.

  Le Canada a de nouveau nivelé la marque tôt en deuxième, lorsque la rondelle a dévié vers Howran qui s’était démarquée et qui a fait pénétrer le disque d’un tir du poignet à partir de la zone privilégiée.

  Beth Larcom a encaissé la défaite devant le filet des États-Unis.

  Les équipes croiseront à nouveau le fer vendredi soir (18 h HE/15 h HP) lors du deuxième match.
