  BEDNARD BLANKS CZECHS AS U.S. OPENS WJAC WITH WIN

  COBOURG, Ont. – Ryan Bednard stopped all 17 shots he faced to record the shutout, backstopping the United States to a 6-0 win over the Czech Republic in its opening game Monday night at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge.

  The Americans, the three-time defending gold medallists, have won 14 in a row at the tournament; their last loss was a 4-2 setback at the hands of Canada East in the semifinals of the 2011 WJAC in Langley, B.C.

  Six different goal-scorers paced the U.S. offence, and 14 players recorded at least one point.

  Carson Meyer wasted no time getting the scoring started, going bar-down over the glove of Czech netminder Dominik Groh for a quick 1-0 lead just 1:55 in, the lone goal of the first period.

  The U.S. dominated the second, outshooting the Czechs 17-2 and pushing its lead to four.

  Max Zimmer made it 2-0 midway through the middle frame, finishing off a pretty passing play on the power play, and Ross Colton beat Groh with a rocket off the post and in at 17:08 for a three-goal advantage.

  Andrew Peeke added another goal 22 seconds after Colton’s marker, taking a drop pass in the slot from Keegan Ford and snapping a quick shot past Groh to put the Americans in control through 40 minutes.

  Callahan Burke was the fifth American to put his name on the scoresheet, beating Groh from the slot early in the third, and Rem Pitlick rounded out the scoring with 8:33 left, walking out from the corner and slipping a shot past the Czech goaltender.

  Bednard was at his best in the final period as the Czechs pushed to find the scoreboard, but he became the second American in as many years to post a tournament-opening shutout; Eric Schierhorn made 24 saves to blank Switzerland 7-0 last year in Kindersley, Sask.

  The Americans will face Canada West on Tuesday night in a first-place showdown in Group B (7 p.m. ET), while the Czechs know they’ll finish third in the group and will wait for Tuesday’s play to conclude to find out who, where and when they’ll play in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

  BEDNARD BLANCHIT LES TCHÈQUES AU PREMIER MATCH DES ÉTATS-UNIS AU DMJA

  COBOURG, Ont. – Ryan Bednard a bloqué les 17 rondelles dirigées vers lui pour signer le jeu blanc, menant les États-Unis à un gain de 6-0 contre la République tchèque à leur premier match, lundi soir, au Défi mondial junior A 2015.

  Les Américains, les triples champions en titre de la médaille d’or, ont remporté 14 matchs de suite à ce tournoi; leur dernier revers remonte au DMJA 2011, à Langley, C,-B., subi en demi-finale aux mains de Canada Est.

  Six joueurs différents ont touché la cible dans le clan américain et 14 joueurs ont récolté au moins un point.

  Carson Meyer n’a pas perdu de temps, battant le cerbère tchèque Dominik Groh d’un tir par-dessus la mitaine pour donner une avance rapide de 1-0 à son équipe, à 1 min 55 s, le seul filet de la première période.

  Les États-Unis ont dominé le deuxième tiers, bombardant les Tchèques de 17 tirs contre 2, augmentant leur avance à quatre buts.

  Max Zimmer a porté le compte à 2-0 à mi-chemin en période médiane, complétant un beau jeu de passes en avantage numérique, et Ross Colton a battu Groh d’un boulet qui a frôlé le poteau avant de donner une priorité de trois filets aux Américains, à 17 min 08 s.

  Andrew Peeke a ajouté un autre but 22 secondes plus tard après le filet de Colton, acceptant une passe arrière de Keegan Ford dans l’enclave et a décoché un tir derrière Groh pour donner le contrôle aux Américains après 40 minutes.

  Callahan Burke a été le cinquième joueur des États-Unis à marquer, battant Groh d’un tir en début de troisième période, et Rem Pitlick a scellé l’issue du match avec 8 min 33 s à écouler, sortant du coin avant de diriger un tir derrière le portier tchèque.

  Bednard a été à son meilleur au troisième vingt, alors que les Tchèques mettaient de la pression pour s’inscrire au pointage, mais il est devenu le deuxième Américain en autant d’années à enregistrer un jeu blanc au premier duel de son équipe dans le tournoi; Eric Schierhorn avait réalisé 24 arrêts pour blanchir la Suisse 7-0 l’an passé à Kindersley, Sask.

  Les États-Unis ont rendez-vous avec Canada Ouest mardi soir, dans un duel pour la première place du groupe B (19 h HE), tandis que les Tchèques savent qu’ils termineront en troisième position du groupe et ils attendront les matchs de mardi pour savoir qui ils affronteront en quart de finale mercredi, dans quelle ville et à quelle heure.
