  LESCHYSHYN GETS SHOOTOUT WINNER AS CANADA BLACK EDGES CZECHS

  DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – It took six rounds and 12 shooters, but Jake Leschyshyn (Grasswood, Sask./Regina, WHL) was the shootout hero, scoring the winner for Canada Black as it earned a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Czech Republic on Monday night at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  Leschyshyn outwaited Czech goaltender Tomas Vomacka and went five-hole before Canadian netminder Alex D’Orio (Sherbrooke, Que./Magog, LHMAAAQ) stopped Filip Zadina to clinch the victory.

  In a match-up of 0-1 teams it was the Czechs who took the early lead; Daniel Bukac opened the scoring at 8:45 when his point shot made its way through traffic and past D’Orio, and Jachym Kondelik found Jakub Galvis just 19 seconds later for a 2-0 Czech lead.

  The Canadian offence was almost non-existant in the first period, managing just two shots on goal, but Michael Rasmussen (South Surrey, B.C./Tri-City, WHL) made one of them count, driving to the net and redirecting a shot from Joseph Veleno (Kirkland, Que./Saint John, QMJHL) up and over Vomacka at 16:38.

  Neither team generated much in the way of scoring opportunities in the second period – shots were just 6-6 in the middle frame – but each team found the back of the net once.

  Black tied the game when Leschyshyn picked up a loose puck at the blue-line, broke in by himself and fired a quick wrist shot that just went over Vomacka’s glove at 13:32.

  But Zadina wasted no time and answered right back just over a minute later, picking up his own rebound off a block by Hayden Davis (Hamilton, Ont./Niagara, OHL) and snapping it home.

  With time running out, Jocktan Chainey (Asbestos, Que./Shawinigan, QMJHL) tied the game for Black at 16:05 of the third period when he walked the puck in from the point and snapped a low wrist shot past Vomacka.

  After a four-on-four overtime failed to produce a winner, the Czechs took the early lead in the shootout when Martin Necas beat D’Orio in Round 2. Martin Kaut missed his opportunity to end the game one round later, and Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Halifax, QMJHL) kept Black alive on its final chance.

  Two more rounds went goalless before Leschyshyn’s winner and D’Orio’s game-ending stop.

  Both teams wrap up preliminary round play Tuesday; the Czechs face Canada White in the matinee (2:30 p.m. MT), followed by Canada Black taking on the United States (7 p.m. MT).

  DAWSON CREEK, C.-B. – Il aura fallu six rondes et 12 tireurs, mais Jake Leschyshyn (Grasswood, Sask./Regina, WHL) a été le héros des tirs de barrage, marquant le but vainqueur dans un gain où Canada Noirs est revenu de l’arrière pour l’emporter 4 à 3 contre la République tchèque lundi soir au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans 2015.

  Leschyshyn a gagné son duel contre le gardien de but tchèque Tomas Vomacka en le battant entre les jambières, puis le gardien canadien Alex D’Orio (Sherbrooke, Qc/Magog, LHMAAAQ) a stoppé Filip Zadina pour assurer la victoire.

  Dans cet affrontement de deux équipes ayant une fiche de 0-1, ce sont les Tchèques qui ont pris rapidement les devants. Daniel Bukac a ouvert la marque à 8 min 45 s lorsque son tir de la pointe s’est faufilé dans la mêlée et derrière D’Orio, et Jachym Kondelik a rejoint Jakub Galvis seulement 19 secondes plus tard pour donner une avance de 2-0 aux Tchèques.

  L’attaque canadienne a été pratiquement absente pendant le premier engagement, ne dirigeant que deux tirs au but. Toutefois, Michael Rasmussen (South Surrey, C.-B./Tri-City, WHL) a veillé à ce que l’un de ces tirs compte en fonçant au filet pour rediriger le tir de Joseph Veleno (Kirkland, Qc/Saint John, LHJMQ) par-dessus le gardien Vomacka à 16 min 38 s.

  Aucune équipe n’a su générer beaucoup d’occasions de marquer en deuxième période – chacune avait 6 tirs au but pour cette période –, mais les deux sont parvenues à inscrire un but.

  Canada Noirs a créé l’égalité lorsque Leschyshyn a récupéré une rondelle libre à la ligne bleue, a effectué une montée par lui-même et a décoché un tir des poignets rapide tout juste au-dessus de la mitaine de Vomacka à 13 min 32 s.

  Cependant, Zadina n’a pas tardé à donner la réplique à peine plus d’une minute plus tard en prenant son propre retour sur un tir bloqué par Hayden Davis (Hamilton, Ont./Niagara, OHL) pour marquer sur un tir frappé.

  Avec peu de temps à jouer, Jocktan Chainey (Asbestos, Qc/Shawinigan, LHJMQ) a égalisé le match pour Canada Noirs à 16 min 5 s de la troisième période lorsqu’il s’est porté à l’attaque depuis la pointe et a dirigé un tir des poignets dans le bas du filet de Vomacka.

  Après une période de prolongation à quatre contre quatre sans but, les Tchèques se sont rapidement donné une avance en tirs de barrage lorsque Martin Necas a battu D’Orio dans la deuxième ronde. Martin Kaut a raté une occasion de mettre fin au match à la ronde suivante, et Arnaud Durandeau (Beaconsfield, Qc/Halifax, LHJMQ) a gardé Canada Noirs en vie alors qu’il devait absolument marquer.

  Deux autres rondes ont eu lieu sans aucun but avant celui de la victoire de Leschyshyn et l’arrêt du gardien D’Orio mettant fin au match.

  Les deux équipes complètent leur calendrier de la ronde préliminaire mardi. Les Tchèques affrontent Canada Blancs en après-midi (14 h 30 HR), puis Canada Noirs se mesure aux États-Unis (19 h HR).
