  ISIGUZO’S OT WINNER GIVES FINNS FIFTH WITH WIN OVER U.S.

  FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Bernard Isiguzo jammed in the game-winner at 6:32 of overtime, giving Finland a 5-4 extra-time win over the United States in Friday’s fifth-place game at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

  After an initial shot from Finnish defenceman Aleksi Anttalainen, Isiguzo drove to the net and poked the rebound past U.S. netminder Dylan St. Cyr for the deciding goal.

  Finland had another strong showing at the tournament – it was fourth last year in Sarnia-Lambton, Ont. – while the Americans sixth-place finish is their worst since they came ninth in 1997.

  Both teams came out with little to no regard for defence, combining for six goals and 26 shots in the first period.

  Teemu Engberg got the party started just 2:07 in, batting a bouncing puck past a surprised St. Cyr, but Sasha Chmelevski took advantage of a turnover at the offensive blue-line to equalize for the U.S. five minutes later.

  The Finnish floodgates opened from there, with three goals in the next 6:27.

  Kristian Vesalainen restored Finland’s lead at 8:17, walking into the slot and beating St. Cyr, and Eeli Tolvanen netted his tournament-leading ninth goal just 73 seconds later, going bar-down over the American netminder’s glove.

  Vesalainen’s second of the period made it 4-1 at 14:44 after Joni Ikonen circled the net before finding the big left winger standing all alone at the top of the U.S. crease.

  Undaunted, the Americans began to chip away at the lead; Scott Reedy pulled the U.S. back within two in the final minute of the opening frame, taking a cross-ice feed from Logan Hustsko and beating Finnish goaltender Lassi Lehtinen.

  Outshot 19-7 in the first period, the U.S. turned the tables in the second, holding a 13-7 advantage, and made it a one-goal game on the power play at 17:21 when Quinn Hughes stick-handled his way into the slot before beating Lehtinen.

  Reedy’s second of the game – a hard, low shot that richocheted off the far post and behind Lehtinen – tied the game with 4:37 to go and forced the extra period.

  Finland finished with a 40-29 advantage in shots on goal.

  FORT ST. JOHN, C.-B. – Bernard Isiguzo a poussé une rondelle libre après 6 min 32 s de temps supplémentaire pour permettre à la Finlande de l’emporter 5-4 en prolongation contre les États-Unis dans le match pour la cinquième position vendredi au Défi mondial de hockey des moins de 17 ans.

  Après un premier tir du défenseur finlandais Aleksi Anttalainen, Isiguzo a foncé au filet et a poussé le rebond derrière le gardien de but des Américains Dylan St. Cyr pour inscrire le but décisif.

  La Finlande a de nouveau connu un bon tournoi – elle avait terminé au quatrième rang l’année dernière à Sarnia-Lambton, Ont. –, tandis que la sixième position des Américains constitue leur pire résultat depuis leur neuvième position en 1997.

  Les deux équipes ont amorcé le match en portant très peu attention au jeu défensif, réalisant un total de six buts et de 26 tirs au but en première période.

  Teemu Engberg a lancé le bal après seulement 2 min 7 s de jeu lorsqu’il a surpris St. Cyr en frappant une rondelle bondissante dans le filet, mais Sasha Chmelevski a profité d’un revirement à la ligne bleue de la zone offensive pour permettre aux États-Unis de créer l’égalité cinq minutes plus tard.

  Dès lors, la Finlande a explosé avec trois buts pendant les 6 min 27 s qui ont suivi.

  Kristian Vesalainen a redonné les devants à la Finlande à 8 min 17 s en se présentant dans la zone privilégiée pour marquer contre St. Cyr, et Eeli Tolvanen a inscrit son neuvième but, le plus haut total du tournoi, en battant le gardien américain du côté de la mitaine avec un tir qui a frappé la barre horizontale avant de pénétrer dans le filet seulement 73 secondes plus tard.

  À 14 min 44 s, le deuxième de Vesalainen au premier engagement a porté la marque à 4-1 après une manœuvre de Joni Ikonen qui a contourné le filet avant de repérer l’imposant ailier gauche laissé seul dans le haut de l’enclave des États-Unis.

  Loin de se décourager, les Américains ont travaillé à réduire l’écart. Scott Reedy a rapproché les États-Unis à seulement deux buts de retard dans les deux dernières minutes de la période initiale lorsqu’il a saisi la passe transversale de Logan Hustsko, pour ensuite tromper la vigilance du gardien finlandais Lassi Lehtinen.

  Dominés 19-7 au chapitre des tirs au but en première période, les États-Unis ont renversé la vapeur dans l’engagement suivant en ayant l’avantage 13-7, en plus de se rapprocher à un seul but de leur adversaire à 17 min 21 s. Pendant un jeu de puissance, Quinn Hughes a enchaîné les feintes jusque dans la zone privilégiée avant de déjouer Lehtinen.

  Grâce à son deuxième but du match – un tir puissant au ras de la glace qui a frappé le poteau du côté éloigné pour terminer sa course derrière Lehtinen –, Reedy a nivelé le pointage avec 4 min 37 s à jouer et a forcé la tenue d’une prolongation.

  La Finlande a terminé le match avec 40 tirs au but contre 29 pour les États-Unis.
