  BELL SCORES TWO; CANADA ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

  ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Ashton Bell (Deloraine, Man./Westman, MFMHL) scored twice and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team held Russia to 12 shots in a 4-0 shutout Thursday night to advance to the gold medal game of the 2016 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.

  Canada also got goals from Ryleigh Houston (Winnipeg, Man./Balmoral Hall School, JWHL) and Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, Man./St. Mary’s, CAHS) in a game in which it outshot Russia 43-12 and dictated play throughout.

  Emma Maltais (Burlington, Ont./Oakville, PWHL) had a two-point night with a pair of assists.

  Édith D’Astous-Moreau (Laval, Que./Stanstead, CAHS) picked up her second shutout in as many starts.

  For the ninth straight year, Canada will face the United States for U18 women’s worlds gold.

  Canada got on the board first on Thursday when Bell’s one-timer from just outside the face-off circle eluded Valeriya Tarakanova midway through the opening period.

  The play was set up moments earlier when Codie Cross (Airdrie, Alta./Warner School, JWHL) intercepted a clearing attempt at the blue line; her ensuing shot was deflected out of play, setting up an offensive zone face-off.

  Having already dominated the opening 20 minutes, Canada started the second period with nearly a minute on the five-on-three. With 15 seconds left in the second penalty, Houston swept in a rebound in front of the crease to make it 2-0.

  As the second period went on, Canada seemed to be almost playing a game of keep-away, its speed allowing it to get to the puck faster and its crisp passes permitting it long stretches of possession.

  Despite Tarakanova proving steady to the Canadian challenge, stopping 27 shots through the first 40 minutes, it was Valeriya Merkusheva starting the third period for Russia.

  Only 2:31 into Merkusheva’s tenure, Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) forced a turnover down low and sent a pass out front to Bell, who buried her second of the game.

  Twenty-five seconds later, Friesen – set up at the bottom of the face-off circle –one-timed a pass from Céline Frappier (Tecumseh, Ont./Toronto, PWHL) to make it 4-0.

  With the win Canada improved its all-time record versus Russia to 6-0.

CATHARINES, Ont. – Ashton Bell (Deloraine, Man./Westman, MFMHL) a inscrit un doublé et l’équipe nationale féminine des moins de 18 ans du Canada a limité la Russie à 12 tirs dans un gain de 4-0 jeudi soir, confirmant ainsi sa participation au match pour la médaille d’or du Championnat mondial féminin des M18 2016 de l’IIHF.

  Le Canada a également obtenu des filets de Ryleigh Houston (Winnipeg, Man./école Balmoral Hall, JWHL) et Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, Man./St. Mary’s, CAHS) dans un match au cours duquel le Canada a dominé la Russie 43-12 dans la colonne des tirs au but, dictant le jeu tout au long de la soirée.

  Le Canada a été le premier à s’inscrire au tableau quand le tir sur réception de Bell de l’extérieur du cercle de mise au jeu a trompé la vigilance de Valeriya Tarakanova à mi-chemin au premier vingt.

  Le jeu avait été préparé quelques instants plus tôt quand Codie Cross (Airdrie, Alb./école Warner, JWHL) a intercepté une tentative de dégagement à la ligne bleue; son tir a été dévié en dehors de la surface de jeu, ce qui a causé une mise au jeu en zone offensive.

  Ayant dominé les 20 premières minutes, le Canada a amorcé la deuxième période avec un 5 contre 3, et ce, pendant environ une minute. Avec 15 secondes à écouler à la deuxième punition, Houston a balayé un retour devant le filet pour augmenter l’avance des siennes à 2-0.

  En début de deuxième période, le Canada semblait vouloir garder l’adversaire à distance, sa vitesse lui permettant de saisir le disque plus rapidement et ses passes vives de garder la possession de la rondelle pendant de longues périodes de temps.

  En dépit du jeu constant de Tarakanova devant la menace canadienne, elle qui a bloqué 27 tirs au cours des 40 premières minutes, c’est Valeriya Merkusheva qui a amorcé le troisième tiers pour les Russes.

  Seulement 2 min 31 s après l’arrivée de Merkusheva dans le match, Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Stoney Creek, PWHL) a forcé un revirement dans le fond de la zone adverse et a effectué une passe devant à Bell, qui a obtenu son deuxième de la rencontre.

  Vingt-cinq secondes plus tard, Friesen a mis la table au bas du cercle de mise au jeu avant de décocher un tir sur réception, acceptant une passe de Céline Frappier (Tecumseh, Ont./Toronto, PWHL), portant la marque à 4-0.

  Avec ce triomphe, le Canada a amélioré sa fiche à 6-0 contre la Russie dans l’histoire de ce tournoi.
